We investigate a collapsing granule event and the associated excitation of waves in the photosphere and chromosphere. Our observations were carried out by using the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph and the TiO 7057Å Broadband Filter Imager of the 1.6 meter Goode Solar Telescope of Big Bear Solar Observatory. During our observations, we found a granule which became significantly darker than neighboring granules. The edge of the granule collapsed within several minutes. After the collapse, transient oscillations occurred in the photospheric and chromospheric layers. The dominant period of the oscillations is close to 4.5 minutes in the photosphere and 4 minutes in the chromosphere. Moreover, in the Ca II-0.5Å raster image, we observed brightenings which are considered as the manifestation of shock waves. Based on our results, we suggest that the impulsive collapse of a granule can generate upward-propagating acoustic waves in the solar quiet region that ultimately develop into shocks.

GMACS is one of the first light instruments for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The development of GMACS control software follows Agile software development process, and the design of the software is based on the Unified Model Language (UML). In this poster, we present the architecture of the GMACS software and the development processes. As an example of the software development, we show the software of the Slit Mask Exchange Mechanism Prototype (SMEM-P) which is part of the GMACS Device Control Package (DCP).
We present spatially resolved outflows and photoionization for a pilot sample of 11 type 1 AGNs (z<0.3) based on the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph Integral Field Unit data. These AGNs were selected since we found strong outflow signatures in SDSS spectra. We focus on [OIII] and Hα emission lines to probe outflow kinematics by measuring line flux, velocity, and velocity dispersion at each pixel. We investigate characteristics of gas kinematics of type 1 AGNs and compare them with those of type 2 AGNs in our previous studies. Furthermore, by drawing BPT map, photoionization states will be also discussed. Based on the results, we discuss various implications on the impacts of outflows on star formation in host galaxies.
We report the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral Field Unit (IFU) observation of a red active galactic nucleus (AGN), 2MASSJ165939.7+183436 (1659+1834). 1659+1834 is a prospective merging supermassive black hole (SMBH) candidate due to its merging features and double-peaked broad emission lines. The double-peaked broad emission lines are kinematically separated by 3000 km/s, with the SMBH of each component weighing at 10^8.9 and 10^7.1 solar mass. Our GMOS IFU observation reveals that the two components of the double-peaked broad emission line are spatially separated by 0.085" (~250pc). In different assumptions for the line fitting, however, a null (<0.05") or a larger spatial separation (~0.15") are also possible. For this GMOS IFU observational results of 1659+1834, various models can be viable solutions, such as the disk emitter and multiple SMBH models. We believe that these results show the need for future research of finding more multiple SMBH systems in red AGNs.
Adaptive Optics (AO) was first studied in the field of astronomy, and its applications have been extended to the field of laser, microscopy, bio, medical, and free space laser communication. AO modelling and simulation are required throughout the system development process. It is necessary not only for proper design but also for performance verification after the final system is built. In KASI, we are trying to develop the AO Python Package for AO modelling and simulation. It includes modelling classes of atmosphere, telescope, Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, deformable mirror, which are the components for an AO system. It also includes the ability to simulate the entire AO system over time. It is being developed in the Super Eye Bridge project to develop a segmented mirror, an adaptive optics, and an emersion grating spectrograph, which are future telescope technologies. And it is planned to be used as a performance analysis system for several telescope projects in Korea.
Far-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (FIMS) is the main payload of the Korea's first scientific micro satellite STSAT-1, which was launched at Sep. 27 2003 successfully. Major objective of FIMS is observing hot gas in the Galaxy in FUV bands to diagnose the energy flow models of the interstellar medium. Supernova remnants, molecular clouds, and Aurora emission in the geomagnetic pole regions are specific targets for pointing observation. Although the whole system was calibrated before launch, it is essential to perform on-orbit calibration for data analysis. For spectral calibration, we observed airglow lines in the atmosphere since they provide good spectral references. We identify and compare the observed airglow lines with model calculations, and correct the spectral distortion appeared in the detector system to improve the spectral resolution of the system.
The FIMS (Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph), the main payload onboard the first Korean science satellite STSAT-1, has performed various observations since its launch on September 2003. It has been found that the attitude informations provided by spacecraft bus system have a time offset problem, and the problem has been extensively studied. After the time offset correction, boresight offsets between FIMS fields of view, of long and short wavelength bands, respectivley, and spacecraft attitude systems, which are mainly due to alignment error between the FIMS and spacecraft mechanical systems, were calculated through the observations of well known calibration targets. Monthly status and precision of the attitude information are also described. Correction methods for spatially variable exposure, intrinsic to FIMS data, are discussed. These results are essential to the FIMS data analysis, and will be used as references for subsequent studies on more accurate attitude corrections.

We performed a new high-resolution spectroscopy of AG Vir for 4 nights from 25 March 2004 using the BOES (Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph) attached to the 1.8-m reflector at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, and obtained a total of 59 spectra where all orbital phases are covered. To get the radial velocities of the binary system, both method of the CCF (Cross-Co..elation Function)and the BF (Broadening Function) were applied to the analysis of all the observed spectra. From these, the CCF could calculate the radial velocities of the primary star alone, while the BF could determine those of the primary and the secondary components. New absolute dimensions were deduced with the combination of our spectroscopic orbital elements ($K_1=90.5km/s$와 $K_2=258.8$) and the photometric solutions of Bell, Rainger, & Hilditch (1990): $A_1,=1.99M_\bigodot,\;M_2=0.62M_\bigodot,\;R_1=2.21R_\bigodot,\;R_2=1.36R_\bigodot,\;L_1=13.17L_\bigodot,\;and\;L_2=3.47L_\bigodot$. Our absolute parameters are larger and brighter than those derived from Bell, Rainger, & Hilditch (1990). We re-analyzed all the previous radial-velocity curves of AG Vir and, as a result, can see that its system velocity scatters largely up to ${\pm}8km/s$. However, we, at present, cannot determine this as the light-time effect due to the third body, which was suggested as a cause of the orbital period changes by Qian (2001).

We present the results of far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of comet C/2001 Q4 (NEAT) obtained with Far-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (FIMS) on board the Korean microsatellite STSAT-1, which operated at an altitude of 700 km in a sun-synchronous orbit. FIMS is a dual channel imaging spectrograph (S-channel 900-1150 ${\AA}$, L-channel 1350-1710 ${\AA}$, and ${\lambda}/{\Delta}{\lambda}$ ~ 550 for both channels) with large image fields of view (S-channel $4.0^{\circ}{\times}4.6^{\prime}$, L-channel $7.5^{\circ}{\times}4.3^{\prime}$, and angular resolution ~ $5-10^{\prime}$) optimized for the observation of diffuse emission of astrophysical radiation. Comet C/2001 Q4 (NEAT) were made in two campaigns during its perihelion approach between May 8 and 15, 2004. Based on the scanning mode observations in the wavelength band of 1400-1700 ${\AA}$, we have constructed an image of the comet with an angular size of $5^{\circ}{\times}5^{\circ}$, which corresponds to the central coma region. Several important fluorescence emission lines were detected including S I multiplets at 1429 and 1479 ${\AA}$, C I multiplets at 1561 and 1657 ${\AA}$, and the CO $A^1{\Pi}-X^1{\Sigma}^+$ Fourth Positive system; we have estimated the production rates of the corresponding species from the fluxes of these emission lines. The estimated production rate of CO was $Q_{CO}=(2.65{\pm}0.63){\times}10^{28}s^{-1}$, which is 6.2-7.4% of the water production rate and is consistent with earlier predictions. The average carbon production rate was estimated to be $Q_C={\sim}1.59{\times}10^{28}s^{-1}$, which is ~60% of the CO production rate. However, the observed carbon profile was steeper than that predicted using the two-component Haser model in the inner coma region, while it was consistent with the model in the outer region. The average sulfur production rate was $Q_S=(4.03{\pm}1.03){\times}10^{27}s^{-1}$, which corresponds to ~1% of the water production rate.
We have determined the disk size of Be stars by using $H{\alpha}$ emission. We observed spectra of Be stars with telescope in SNU, equipped with SB SGS (Santa Babara Self Guided Spectrograph) and CCD ST-8. The size of disk of Be stars was estimated with the Be star model of Grundstrom & Gies (2006). This study suggests that the medium resolution spectra taken with small telescope equipped with commercial spectrograph are useful to estimate the approximate size of the $H{\alpha}$ emitting disk around Be stars.
