Acoustic Analysis of Speech Disorder Associated with Motor Aphasia - A Case Report -

  • Motor aphasia is an affection frequently caused by insult of the left middle cerebral artery and usually accompanied by a large lesion involving the Broca's area and the adjacent motor and premotor areas. Therefore, a patient with motor aphasia commonly shows articulatory disturbances due to failure of the motor programing of speech sound. Objective assessment and treatment of phonologic programing is one of the important aspects of speech therapy in aphasic patients. We analyzed the speech disorders acompanied with motor aphasia in a 45-year-old man using a computerized sound spectrograph, Visi-$Pitch{\circledR}$, and Multi-Dimensional Voice $Program{\circledR}$. We concluded that a computerized speech analysis system is a useful tool to visualize and quantitatively analyse the severity and progression of dysarthria, and the effect of speech therapy.

경음재론(硬音再論) (Korean Forced Sounds Revisited)

  • Not only Korean scholars but also many scholars in the field of phonetic science were interested in Korean forced sounds from the viewpoint of general phonetics as a way to clarify the process of production and the physical characteristics of speech sounds. The author also tried to elucidate the characteristics of Korean forced sounds using the sound spectrograph (Umeda & Umeda 1965). Over the past 30 years since this study, many scholars have analyzed these sounds from various standpoints resulting in copious amounts of literature. In this paper, the author critically examined the results of previous studies on this subject dealing with VOT, spectral characteristics, fundamental frequency, states of glottis obtained from fiber-optic investigations, and patterns of tongue-palate contact acquired from observation by use of dynamic palatograph. These points were discussed in relation to the author's field of investigation.

A Bright H${\alpha}$ kernel Observed Using the FISS

  • H${\alpha}$ transient bright kernels may be an important diagnostic of energy conversion processes occurring in the choromosphere during flares. We observed an H${\alpha}$ kernel that occurred in AR 11263 in associated with a small flare on 2011 Autust 5th using the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph installed at the 1.6m New Solar Telescope of Big Bear Solar Observatory. We find that both the H${\alpha}$ line and the CaII 8542${\AA}$ line appear in emission, with a red asymmetry in that they display red wings of enhanced emission. The red asymmetry shows 5-30 km/s downward motion for 8 minutes. We determine some physical parameters by adopting the Cloud mode and discuss the physical meaning of these results.

  • We present some results of the spectral analysis for Type Ia supernova SN 2011fe in M101, which was discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory on August 24 2011 UT. We performed spectroscopic observations for SN 2011fe at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory with the high resolution echelle spectrograph BOES attached to 1.8-m reflector. Spectra of 18 epochs are obtained from September 6 2011 to April 1 2012 UT. Spectral feature variations for several significant lines and explosion mechanism will be discussed.

Velocity Oscillations in the Chromosphere and the Transition Region above Plage Regions

  • We investigate velocity oscillations in the active region plage by using the high-spatial, high-spectral and high-temporal resolution spectral data acquired by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). From the Mn I $2801.907{\AA}$ (lower chromosphere), C II (lower transition region) and Si IV (middle transition region) lines, we measure the line of sight Doppler velocity at different atmospheric layers, and present results of wavelet analysis of the plage region with a range of periods from 2 to 8 minutes. In addition, we present correlations of the oscillations from the lower chromosphere to the middle transition region. Finally, we will discuss the regional dependence of the oscillation properties on physical properties such as temperature and magnetic field inclination.

Analysis of Ellerman Bomb Spectra Observed by FISS

  • We have studied the high-resolution $H{\alpha}$ and Ca II $8542{\AA}$ line profiles of Ellerman Bombs (EBs) obtained with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) installed on the 1.6m Goode Solar Telescope (GST) in Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). The FISS spectra of EBs are compared with synthetic profiles computed using RH non-LTE radiative transfer code and a set of 1D atmospheric models with local transient heating, the latter of which is modeled by varying local temperature enhancement in magnitude and height. We could reproduce each of the observed $H{\alpha}$ and Ca II line profiles separately with different atmospheric models, but not with a single atmospheric model. To fit the observed $H{\alpha}$ lines we often need much higher temperature enhancements than those needed for fitting Ca II lines. Possible causes for this temperature mismatch are briefly discussed.

Locus equation -as a phonetic descriptor for place articulation in Arabic.

  • Previous studies of American English(e.g. Sussman 1991, 1993, 1994) CVC coarticulation with initial consonants representing the labial, alveolar, and velar showed a linear relationship that fits to data points formed by plotting onsets of F2 transition along the y-axis and their corresponding midvowel points along the x-axis. The present study extends the locus equation metric to include the following places of articulation:uvular, pharyngeal, laryngeal, and emphatics. The question of interest is to determine if locus equation could serve as phonetic descriptor for the place of articulation in Arabic. Five male native speakers of Colloquial Egyptian Arabic(CEA) read a list of 204 CVC and CVCC words, containing eight different places of articulation and eight vowels. Average of formant patterns(Fl,F2,F3) onsets, midpoints, and offsets were calculated, using wide band spectrograms obtained by means of the kay spectrograph model(7029), and plotted as locus equations. A summary of the acoustic properties of the place of articulation of CEA will be presented in the frames of bVC and CVb. Strong linear regression relationships were found for every place of articulation.

보현산천문대 고분산 편광 분광기 개념 설계 (CONCEPTUAL DESIGN STUDY OF THE BOES STOKESMETER)

  • We plan to install the polarimetric optics in the AGU(acqusition and guiding unit) of the 1.8 m telescope at the BOAO(Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory). With this, the spectropolarimetric observations with the resolution of 45,000 and 60,000 in 4,000 to $8,000{\AA}$ ange could be done by the BOES(BOao Echelle Spectrograph). If we use the precision radial velocity measurement capability of the BOES, the accuracy of the magnetic field intensity measurements with this new BOES stokesmeter will be much increased. We present here the design concept of the BOES stokesmeter. Some details on the optics, mechanical parts, fiber parts and the lab test procedures of this stokesmeter are explained.

  • We present the detailed description on the fiber techniques adopted in the BOES: the design concepts and manufacturing of the v grooves, the procedures of the fiber polishing, adhering of the fibers to the v grooves, and the axis alignment of the fiber input and exit. The high efficiency and throughput of the BOES imply that the adopted fiber arts and the other optical components were well designed and properly treated. We learned that the relatively low efficiency of the 80 micron fiber comparing with the 200 and 300 micron fibers comes from the seeing and the guiding effects not from the poor fiber handling.

  • We developed a data reduction program (RX) to process BOES data automatically. It processes a whole set of data taken during one night automatically - preprocessing, extraction to one-dimensional spectra and wavelength calibration. The execution is very fast and the performance looks pretty good. We described the performance of this program, comparing its procedure with that of IRAF. RX does not have functions for continuum normalization yet. We will develop those functions in the next works.
