  • In order to evaluate KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) application products and develop the multi-sensor data application technologies, the Product Validation Site (PVS) will be designed and constructed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). Also KARl has a plan for acquisition of multi-sensor data such as ENVISAT ASAR and Project for On Board Autonomy (PROBA) Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) data through international cooperation with European Space Agency (ESA). These data will be utilized with KOMPSAT-2 Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC) data. KARI and ESA have identified a mutual interest in creating synergy in the joint exploitation of Earth Observation data for science and applications both in Korea and Europe. This paper summarizes the status of joint experimental studies between KARI and ESA for further applications and presents some expected results from related activities.

  • $Three\;compounds-ethyl-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$, 1,2,3,7-tetramethoxyxanthone, 1,7-dimethoxyxanthone-were isolated from roots of Polygala tenuifolia. The structures of these compounds were establised on the basis of spectral evidence including 2D NMR and HMBC studies. $Ethyl-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ was isolated for the first time from Polygala genus and HMBC data of these compounds were first reported.

  • Schisandra chinensis Baill. (Shisandraceae) is used commonly in traditional Korean herbal medicine. One new dibenzocyclooctene lignan compound, benzoylgomisin Q, was found, for the first time, in the fruits of Schisandra chinensis Baill., together with five known lignan compounds; schisandrin, gomisin A, gomisin G, deoxyschisandrin, and gomisin N, using an ESI-positive MS-preparative HPLC auto-purification system. The structures of these compounds were determined via UV, MS, and NMR spectral studies.

  • The chemical investigation on the cell suspension culture of Morinda elliptica L. yielded eight anthraquinones, two of which, anthragallol-1,2-dimethyl ether (3) and purpurin-1-methyl ether (4), have not been isolated from the original plant. Other compounds isolated include nordamnacanthal (1), alizarin-1-methyl ether (2), rubiadin (5), soranjidiol (6), $lucidin-{\omega}-methyl$ ether (7), and morindone (8). The structures of anthraquinones were established based on spectral studies.

  • Essential oil of the root of Angelica dahurica Benth et Hook(Umbelliferae) was investigated. Essential oil was obtained from the dried roots by steam distillation and fractionated by column chromatography. Each isolate or fraction was identified by GC, GC-MS and spectral analysis. It was found to contain eleven monoterpenes such as ${\alpha}-pinene(4.74%),\;campben, {\beta}-pinene,\;myrcene,\;{\alpha}-phellandrene,\;{\delta}-3-carene(39.4%),\;{\alpha}-terpinene,\;{\rho}-cymene,\;{\beta}-phellandrene,\;{\alpha}-terpinene,\;terpinolene\;and\;also\;found\;to\;contain\;4-vinylguaiacol,\;iso-elemicin,\;{\beta}-elemene$, caryophyllene, ligustilide, osthol and seven tentatively identified sesquiterpenes.

  • Essential oil of the root of Angelica gigas Nakai (Umbelliferae) was investigated. Essential oil was obtained from the dried roots by steam distillation and fractionated by column chromatography. Each isolate or fraction was identified by GC, GC-MS and spectral analysis. It was found to contain eleven monoterpenes such as ${\alpha}-pinene,\;camphene,\;{\beta}-pinene,\;myrcene,\;{\alpha}-phellandrene,\;{\Delta}-3-carene,\;{\alpha}-terpinene,\;p-symene,\;limonene,\;{\gamma}-terpinene$ and terpinolene and also found to contain 4-vinylguauacol, myristicin, elemol, ${\beta}-eudesmol,\;{\alpha}-eudesmol,\;four\;sesquiterpenes\;involving\;{\Delta}-elemene$. Four sesquiterpenes and five sesquiterpene alcohols were tentatively identified by comparison of their mass spectra.

  • In the course of screening for the tipA promoter-inducing substances, we isolated an active compound, sulfomycin Ia, from the mycelium of a microorganism designated 50634. The producing organism was identified as Streptomyces sp. on the basis of taxonomic studies. Sulfomycin Ia was purified from mycelial extract by silica gel column chromatography, LH-20 column chromatography, silica gel TLC, and preparative HPLC. The molecular weight of sulfomycin Ia was determined to be m/z 1129 (M+Na)$^{+}$ by FAB mass measurement and $^{1}$H NMR spectroscopic analysis. The structure was assigned as a derivative of sulfomycin I with thiazole, methyloxazole, oxazole, and pyridine rings by $^{1}$H NMR spectral data.

  • Silk fibers excavated at Fujinoki mounted tomb, Shimoikeyana mounted tomb and Kuriyama site were examined using FT-IR microscope and two peaks called amide I and II present in modern silk fibers were compared with those of excavated fibers. It was found that amide ground in a polymer molecule decreased with the progress of degradation and peak intensity of amide group in infrared spectrum decreased correspondingly. The advantages of FT-IR microscopy for the analysis of organic remains in archaeological view point were evaluated and it was concluded that the systematic investigation of spectral change due to the degradation of respective material is essential.

  • The steam distillate obtained from sawdust of Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai was fractionated by centrifugal thin-film evaporation. and then the fractions were investigated against antiplatelet activity using washed rabbit platelets in vitro. The biologically active constituent of T. dolabrata sawdust was isolated by silica gel column chromatography and HPLC and characterized as carvacrol by various spectral analysis ($^{1}H$, $^{13}C$-NMR and GC/MS studies). • Although there have been wide range of studies to characterize forest stands based upon spectral information of satellite image, it was not fully understood the texture information of forest stand using high resolution data. The objective of this study is to evaluate several texture measures for characterizing forest stand structure, such as species composition, diameter at breast height(DBH), stand density, and age. High resolution IKONOS satellite imagery data were acquired in August 200 lover the forested area near Ulsan, Korea. Primary forest types were plantation pine, mixed forest, and natural deciduous forest of stand age ranging from 10 to 50 years old. Several GLCM-based texture measures were compared with forest stand characteristics. In overall, a texture measure (contrast) calculated using red band were better to differentiate species and age group than other texture measures and near infrared bands.
