In applying the spectral stochastic finite element methods to the frequency response analysis, the conventional methods are known to give unstable and inaccurate results near the natural frequencies. To address this issue, a new sensitivity based stabilized formulation for stochastic frequency response analysis is proposed in this paper. The main difference over the conventional spectral methods is that the polynomials of random variables are applied to both numerator and denominator in approximating the harmonic response solution. In order to reflect the resonance behavior of the structure, the denominator polynomials is constructed by utilizing the natural frequency sensitivity and the random mode superposition. The numerator is approximated by applying a polynomial chaos expansion, and its coefficients are obtained through the Galerkin or the spectral projection method. Through various numerical studies, it is seen that the proposed method improves accuracy, especially in the vicinities of structural natural frequencies compared to conventional spectral methods.
Measuring spectral reflectance can be regarded as obtaining inherent color parameters, and spectral reflectance has been used in image processing. Model-based spectrum recovering, one of the method for obtaining spectral reflectance, uses ordinary camera with multiple illuminations. Conventional model-based methods allow to recover spectral reflectance efficiently by using only a few parameters, however it requires some parameters such as power spectrum of illuminations and spectrum sensitivity of camera. In this paper, we propose an enhanced model-based spectrum recovering method without pre-measured parameters: power spectrum of illuminations and spectrum sensitivity of camera. Instead of measuring each parameters, spectral reflectance can be efficiently recovered by estimating and using the spectrum characteristic matrix which contains spectrum parameters: basis function, power spectrum of illumination, and spectrum sensitivity of camera. The spectrum characteristic matrix can be easily estimated using captured images from scenes with color checker under multiple illuminations. Additionally, we suggest fast recovering method preserving positive constraint of spectrum by nonnegative basis function of spectral reflectance. Results of our method showed accurately reconstructed spectral reflectance and fast constrained estimation with unmeasured camera and illumination. As our method could be conducted conveniently, measuring spectral reflectance is expected to be widely used.
Many researches have been done to define the physical parameters for the wave generation and transformation over a coastal region. However, most of these have been limited to the application of particular conditions, as they are generally too empirical. To yield more reasonable wave estimation using a spectral wave model, it is important to understand how they work for the wave estimation. This study involved a comprehensive sensitivity test against the spectral resolution and the physical source/sink terms of the spectral wave model using SWAN and TOMAWAC, which have the same physical background with several different empirical/theoretical formulations. The tests were conducted for the East Anglian coast, UK, which is characterized by a complex bathymetry due to several shoals and offshore sandbanks. For the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the models' performance with different input conditions, the wave elements and spectrums predicted at representative sites the East Anglia coast were compared/analyzed. The spectral resolution had no significant effect on the model results, but the lowest resolution on the frequency and direction induced underestimations of the wave height and period. The bottom friction and depth-induced breaking terms produced relatively high variations in the wave prediction, depending on which formulation was applied. The terms for the quadruplet and whitecapping had little effect on the wave estimation, whereas the triads tended to predict shorter and higher waves by energy transferring to higher frequencies.

In this study, a frequency domain model updating method is presented using power spectral density (PSD) data. It uses the sensitivity of PSD function with respect to the unknown structural parameters through a decomposed form of transfer function. The stiffness parameters are captured with high accuracy through solving the sensitivity equations utilizing the least square approach. Using numerically noise polluted data, the model updating results of a truss model prove robustness of the method against measurement and mass modelling errors. Results prove the capabilities of the method for parameter estimation using highly noise polluted data of low ranges of excitation frequency.
In the paper the analysis of natural vibrations of the transmission line with use of spectral elements and the laboratory experiments is performed. The purpose of the investigation is to analyze the natural vibrations of the transmission line and compare with the results obtained in the numerical simulations. Particular attention is paid to the hysteretic and aerodynamic damping analysis. Sensitivity of the wave number is performed for changing of the tension force, as well as for the different damping parameters. The numerical model is made using the Spectral Element Method. In the spectral model, for various parameters of stiffness, damping and tension force, the system response is checked and compared with the results of the accelerations obtained in the measurements. A frequency response functions (FRF) are calculated. The credibility of the model is assessed through a validation process carried out by comparing graphical plots of FRF and time history analysis and numerical values expressing differences in acceleration amplitude (MSG), phase angle differences (PSG) and differences in acceleration and phase angle total (CSG) values. The next aspect constituting the purpose of this paper is to present the wide possibilities of modelling and simulation of slender conductors using the Spectral Element Method. The obtained results show good accuracy in the range of both experimental measurements as well as simulation analysis. The paper emphasizes the ease with which the sensitivity of the conductor and its response to changes in density of spectral mesh division, tensile strength or material damping can be studied.
Although the use of apodization functions in connection with postprocessing of a 2D NMR spectrum proves improved spectral quality, there is usually a trade-off between resolution enhancement and noise suppression due to a classical "uncertainty principle." In this study, therefore, a mathematical deconvolution technique called "Maximum Likelihood Deconvolution (MLD)" was adopted to achieve the spectral resolution and sensitivity enhancement simultaneously. The MLD technique greatly facilitates visualization and restoration of the genuine spectral information from complex 2D NMR spectra that would be problematic with the conventional apodization/FT processing. In particular, application of the MLD to the 2D-NOE spectrum would be very useful to derive the important proton connectivities, which are essential to achieve elucidating the 3D molecular structure.

Tri-stimulus values of CIE-XYZ and RGB values obtained by photographic film, CCD camera or scanner depend on the spectral sensitivity of imaging devices and the spectral radiant distribution of the illumination. It is important to record and reproduce the reflectance spectra of the object for true device independent color reproduction and high accurate recording of the scene. In this paper, a method to record the reflection spectra of the object is introduced and its application to spectral endoscopes is presented.
Human hearing sensitivity is frequency-dependent. The sensitivity is low at both ends of the audible frequency, and the sensitivity is the highest in the middle band at 3000 Hz. The heart sound of a healthy person is concentrated at a low frequency of 200 Hz or less, and despite using a stethoscope, the hearing sensitivity of the human body is low, and the stethoscope sound is low. Amplifying the sound of the stethoscope is not effective in distinguishing heart sounds in noisy environments because it maintains the same signal-to-noise ratio. In this study, a method of enhancing auditory stimulation was developed by applying a method of moving the spectrum of auscultation sounds into a high-frequency region where the human body is highly sensitive to hearing. The spectrum of the auscultation sound was moved up by 500 Hz in the frequency domain, and an inverse fast Fourier transform (FFT) was performed to reconstruct the auscultation sound. The heart sounds reconstructed by moving the spectra were divided into the first heart and second heart sound components, as in the original heart sound, and it was confirmed that the intensity was large in the cochleagram representing auditory stimulation. Therefore, this study suggested that spectral shift is a method to enhance auditory stimulation during auscultation without increasing the intensity of the auscultation sound.
This paper reports a fiber-optic temperature sensor using a single mode fused fiber coupler incorporating a thermo-optic external medium. The spectral transmission was altered by changing the refractive index of the external thermo-optic medium. A theoretical and experimental investigation was carried out with the aim of achieving high sensitivity. The measured sensitivity for the environmental temperature was as high as -1.5 $nm/^{\circ}C$.
