  • Despite abundant research outcomes of blind source separation (BSS) in many types of simulated environments, their performances are still not satisfactory to be applied to the real environments. The major obstacle may seem the finite filter length of the assumed mixing model and the nonlinear sensor noises. This paper presents a two-step speech enhancement method with multiple microphone inputs. The first step performs a frequency-domain BSS algorithm to produce multiple outputs without any prior knowledge of the mixed source signals. The second step further removes the remaining cross-channel interference by a spectral cancellation approach using a probabilistic source absence/presence detection technique. The desired primary source is detected every frame of the signal, and the secondary source is estimated in the power spectral domain using the other BSS output as a reference interfering source. Then the estimated secondary source is subtracted to reduce the cross-channel interference. Our experimental results show good separation enhancement performances on the real recordings of speech and music signals compared to the conventional BSS methods.

  • The merging of different scales or multi-sensor image data is becoming a widely used procedure of the complementary nature of various data sets. Ideally, the merging method should not distort the characteristics of the high-spatial and high-spectral resolution data used. To present an effective merging method for survey of reclaimed land, this paper compares the results of Intensity Hue Saturation (IHS), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Color Normalized(CN) and High Pass Filter(HPF) methods used to merge the information contents of the high-resolution (6.6 m) Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) panchromatic image of the first Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite 1 (KOMPSAT-1) and the multi-spectral Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image data. The comparison is made by visual evaluation of three-color combination images of IHS, PCA, CN and HPF results based on spatial and spectral characteristics. The use of a contrasted EOC panchromatic image as a substitute for intensity in merged images with MODIS bands 1, 2 and 3 was found to be particularly effective in this study.

  • In the conventional speech processing, the technique of FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) is usually applied to the finite number of samples within the window of specified length using the fixed sampling rate. In this case, the temporal resolution is dependent upon the length of window while the spectral resolution is dependent upon the number of samples within the window. Thus, once the temporal resolution is determined the spectral resolution is also determined or vice versa. To resolve this type of dilemma, a new type of bank-filter similar to the characteristics of cochlear model needs to be considered. Furthermore, wide dynamic range of cochlea certainly helps the stable extraction of speech features. In the paper, the human auditory system will be briefly introduced and previous works on auditory preprocessors based on cochlear model will be reviewed. As a conclusion, the design considerations of auditory preprocessors based on cochlear model will be addressed.

  • In this paper, enhancement of speech corrupted by additive white or colored noise is stuided. The nuconstrained frequency-domain block least-mean-square (UFBLMS) adaptation algorithm and its frequency-weighted version are newly applied to speech enhancement. For enhancement of speech degraded by white noise, the performance of the UFBLMS algorithm is superior to the spectral subtraction method or Wiener filtering technique by more than 3 dB in segmented frequency-weighted signal-to-noise ratio(FWSNERSEG) when SNR of speech is in the range of 0 to 10 dB. As for enhancement of noisy speech corrupted by colored noise, the UFBLMS algorithm is superior to that of the spectral subtraction method by about 3 to 5 dB in FWSNRSEG. Also, it yields better performance by about 2 dB in FWSNR and FWSNRSEG than that of time-domain least-mean-square (TLMS) adaptive prediction filter(APF). In view of the computational complexity and performance improvement in speech quality and intelligibility, the frequency-weighted UFBLMS algorithm appears to yield the best performance among various algorithms in enhancing noisy speech corrupted by white or colored noise.

  • A machine tool generally has some serious stability problems in the form of tool chatter during the cutting process. Chatter vibration deteriorates the surface finish, reduce tool and machine life, accelerates machine tool system component wear, and may lead to an unacceptable noise sound in the working environment. In this study, the behavior of spectral density of AE signal and principal cutting force signal in order to monitor the chatter vibration in the cutting process has been investigated. From the results, the reliability of proposed monitoring method has been confirmed.

  • Three thermally stable red dyes of azo, quinacridone and perylene derivatives were synthesized and dye-based color filters were manufactured for liquid crystal display. Aggregation behavior of the dyes and their spectral property in film state were investigated by concentration dependent spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). These dyes have remarkable difference on their aggregation behavior in film state. Such difference of aggregation behavior affects the spectral property of the film, and it can cause decreasing the transmittance of dye-based color filters.

  • After making the light modulator using the BLN-PZT 9.0/65/35 specimen which has the slim-loop hysteresis characteristics and quadratic electro-optic characteristics, switching and spectral response characteristics were investigated. As the results of switching characteristics of the light modulator, it was found that the transmitted light intensity was modulated by both AC and pulse voltage. From the possibility of the selective transmission of the RGB(Red, Green, Blue) spectrum with electric field, the application for the light modulator, light shutter and color filter was expected.

  • In many areas of speech signal processing such as automatic speech recognition and packet based voice communication technique, VAD (voice activity detection) plays an important role in the performance of the overall system. In this paper, we present a new feature parameter for VAD which is the product of energy of the signal and the difference of two types of entropies. For this end, we first define a Mel filter-bank based entropy and calculate its difference from the conventional entropy in frequency domain. The difference is then multiplied by the spectral energy of the signal to yield the final feature parameter which we call PEED (product of energy and entropy difference). Through experiments. we could verify that the proposed VAD parameter is more efficient than the conventional spectral entropy based parameter in various SNRs and noisy environments.

  • Optical fiber gratings have been intensively studied for applications in optical fiber communications and sensor systems due to their all-fiber configuration, low insertion loss, low cost, and high flexibility. Especially, cladding mode coupling fiber devices such as long period gratings (LPG) and acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF) have been developed as a gain equalization filter in erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems$^{(1-2)}$ . • Here we designed and synthesized new zinc phthalocyanines and structures were fully confirmed by spectral and elemental analysis. All phthalocyanines have a very good solubility in industrial solvents like chloroform, dichloromethane, dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N-dimethyl formamide, propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate (PGMEA), acetone, tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile. UV-Visible absorption and transmittance in PGMEA showed that these dyes have suitable spectral properties for LCD color filters. By Triton X surfactant study, we confirmed that these dyes are not showing any aggregation in PGMEA. We dissolved the all phthalocyanines in LCD fabricating solvent (PGMEA), and all phthalocyanines showed more than 8 wt% of solubility. Finally, all of these results concluded that PCK1, PCK2 and PCK3 are fit for LCD green color filter.
