  • The effects of air velocity and excess air on combustion characteristics were studied in a fluidized bed combustor. The domestic low-grade anthracite coal with heating value of 2010 kcal/kg and the imported bituminous coal from Australia with heating value of 6520 kcal/kg were used as coal samples. The combustion characteristics of mixed fuels in a fluidized bed combustor could be interpreted by pressure fluctuation properties, ash distribution and gas emission. The properties of the pressure fluctuations, such as the standard deviation, cross-correlation function, dominant frequency and the power spectral density function, were obtained from the statistical analysis. From this study, the combustion region increased with increasing air velocity but decreased with excess air due to combustion characteristics of anthracite and bituminous coal.

  • A quantitative analysis has been made to estimate the horizontal variation of physical parameters in a loop type active prominence by analyzing Call H&K and $H_{\varepsilon}{\ldots}$ spectra taken from such an active prominence (appeared on May 23, 1981 with position angle 251 degree) with Littrow type spectrograph attached to 25cm coronagraph at Norikura Coronal Station of National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. The spectral resolution is 1.12A/mm and the spatial resolution is 25'/mm for Call H&K lines. The present study shows that the turbulent velocity ranges from 10km/s to 20 km/s in the loop prominence, which are in good agreement with those of Hirayama (1989). It is also found that the temperature of the loop prominence is higher than that of quiescent prominences$(\~8,000 K)$ by about 4,000 K, whose temperature deviation seems very high.

  • Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) is a cost-effective technique to fabricate metallic mirrors. In particular, the servo-assisted diamond turning option is highly useful for the fabrication of freeform surfaces. However, the SPDT process leaves periodic tool marks on machined mirror surfaces, leading to undesirable diffraction effect, as well as the deviation of input beam. In order to solve this problem, we propose new SPDT machining conditions to minimize tool marks. We will also show the results from optical measurement and Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis to evaluate the expectable performance for applications in wide field infrared telescopes.

  • One dimensional line edge detection sensor was investigated for the application to detect line or edge of wide sheet winding to cylindrical roller. Line edge detection sensor was realized using align-free 1:1 optical system having 1 convex lens and by processing sum or difference of signals from two photo-diodes in a bi-cell photodetector. Line width up to 0.1mm on object having various materials and colors was detectable, and the deviation of wound sheet was found to be under 0.2mm.

  • Land information system is a data base describing physical or legal characteristics of land areas, sometimes called a land records system. The digital remote sensor data is useful to calculate some fundamental statistics of the spectral data. This normally involves computing the minimum and maximum value for each band imagery, the mean, the standard deviation, a variance-covariance matrix, and frequencies of brightness values in each channel which are used to produce histograms. In this paper, author emphasize scanning for aerial photos, and next paper will be scanning for satellite image.

  • The wavelengt lockin gsystem of the optical fabry-perot filter theoretially derived and experimentally realized by using the ithering method in order to compensate the laser wavelength drift increasing the BER of the WDM system. The deviation between the laser wavelength and the optical filter center wavelength is compensated by applying a suitable voltage to the PZT. Accordingly, the laser wavelength selected by the fabry-perot filter always maintains the condition of maximum transmission powr. A wavelength locking system has been demonstrated using a fiber fabry-perot filter with a free spectral range of 80nm and an FWH of 1nm. The voltages of the sine wave generated for dithering was 20mV and 10mV, the frequency was 2kHz and center wavelength of the tunable laser was 1550nm. In this paper, the locking system have 20ms of locking time and 2nm of locking range.

  • On the formulation frameworks of linearly perturbed spacetime and weak gravitational lensing(WGL) we studied the statistical properties of a bundle of light rays propagating through stochastic gravitational wave background(SGWB). For this we considered the SGWB as tensor perturbations of linearly perturbed Friedmann spacetime. Using the solution of null geodesic deviation equation(NGDE) we related the convergence, shear and rotation deformation spectra of WGL with the strain spectra of SGWB. Adopting the astrophysical and cosmological SGWB strain spectra which were already known we investigated the approximated spectral forms of convergence, shear and rotation of WGL.

  • The design spectrum for Korea, which is known to belong to an intra-plate region, is developed from the ground motion records of the earthquakes occurred in Korea and overseas intra-plate regions. The horizontal spectrum is defined as geometric mean spectrum, GMRotI50. From the statistical analysis of the geometric mean spectra, a mean plus one standard deviation spectrum in lognormal distribution is obtained. Regression analysis is performed on this curve to determine the shape of spectrum including transition periods. The developed design spectrum is valid for the estimation both spectral acceleration and displacement.

  • In the past study, the fragility curve for the evaluation of earthquake resistance and earthquake-related damage of concrete bearing wall structures were studied. The fragility curve represents the probability of being in or exceeding a given damage state such as Slight, Moderate, Extensive or Complete structural damage state, and is defined as a cumulative lognormal distribution. Each fragility curve is characterized by median and lognormal standard deviation values. We performed parametric pushover analysis for typical 12 and 24 stories apartment buildings. Based on the results, the fragility curves of concrete wall structures were standardized. Using the fragility curve, engineers can directly evaluate the probability of a damage state to a spectral displacement of interest.

  • Five new satellite image interpretation modules are developed. The modules are for: 1) construction of a realistic color image, 2) feature recognition by intensity filtering, 3) removal of spurious spots by next -neighbor count comparison, 4) deviation-amplification filtering, and 5) feature recognition by spectral distribution pattern. The modules were applied to a set of IKONOS images of 8 x 8 km area of the city of Daejeon, Korea, to recognize the distribution of various features such as water resources, playgrounds, forests, etc.
