  • In this paper, we develop a new system to visualize the blood flow map in skin tissue, using the technique of Laser Speckle Flowgraphy (LSFG). The measuring unit consists of the laser diode, imaging system, line sensor, scanning mirror, and one-board microcomputer. The speckle signal is analyzed and sent to a PC, where the blood flow in a tissue area of $14mm{\times}26 mm$ is evaluated and displayed in a 2-D color map. It is demonstrated that the new LSFG instrument is useful to evaluate the degree of allergic reaction in patch test.

  • Since variance of noise is important parameter for a noise filter to reduce noise in image and the performance of noise filter is dependent on estimated variance. In this paper, we apply additive noise variance estimation method to estimate variance of speckle noise of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. Generally, speckle noise is in multiplicative model, logarithmic transformation is then used to transform multiplicative model into additive model. Here, speckle noise is generally modeled as Gamma distribution function with different looks. The additive noise variance estimation is processed in log domain. The synthesis image and real image of SAR are implemented to test and confirm results and show that more accurate estimation can be achieved.

  • To obtain $A_2$ experimentally in the $J-A_2$ theory, deformation field on the lateral surface of a CT specimen was to be determined using Laser speckle method. The crack growth was measured using direct current potential drop method and most procedure of experimental and data reduction was performed according to ASTM Standard E1737-96. Laser speckle images during crack propagation were monitored by two CCD cameras to cancel the effect of rotation and translation of the specimen. An algorithm to pursue displacement of a point from each image was developed and successfully used to measure $A_2$ continuously as the crack tip was propagated. The effects of specimen thickness on J-R curve and $A_2$ were explored.

  • Transient and asymmetric density distributions have been investigated by digital speckle tomography. Multiple CCD images captured movements of speckles in three angles of view simultaneously because the flows were asymmetric and transient. The speckle movements between no flow and downward butane flow from a circular half opening have been calculated by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be tranferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. The three-dimensional density fields have been reconstructed from the fringe shift by a real-time multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART).

  • Laser speckle photography-one of the Laser speckle measurement methods which, recently, are used widely in various science, and engineering applications are succesfully used in the non-contact measurement of In-plaane displacement. In this study, automated measurement and analysis are tried in the laser speckle photo- graphy method using a video camera, computer control and processing, and a X-Y positioning table driven by computer controlled stepping motor. The experiment was compared with the theorecial strain and stress data from finite element method. The result showed that displacement, strain and stress can be measured more accurately and conveniently by using this approach.

  • A reflection type optical fiber line sensor based on the speckle detection has been developed using the optical fiber mirror with the reflectance of 72 %. Some experiments were carried on with the automobile and the 500 m length multimod fiber. When the automobile passed on the fiber sensor, two abrupt changes of the output waveform occured like the transmission type sensor based on the speckle variations. The signal to noise ratio of this sensor was about 40 dB.

  • This paper presents a modified mean curvature diffusion filter to smooth speckle noise in images. Mean curvature diffusion filter has already shown good results in reducing noise in images while preserving fine details. In the mean curvature diffusion, the rate of smoothing is controlled by the local value of the diffusion coefficient chosen to be a function of the local image gradient magnitude. In this paper, the diffusion coefficient is modified to be controlled adaptively by local image surface slope and heterogeneity. The local surface slope contributes to preserving details (e.g.edges) in image and the local surface heterogeneity helps the smoothing filter consider the amount of noise in both edge and non-edge area. The proposed filter's performance is demonstrated by quantitative experiments using speckle noised aerial image and TerraSAR-X satellite image.

  • In this paper we record the complex hologram of a real object with optical scanning holography (OSH). We reconstruct the complex hologram using a numerical process, and then we evaluate the degree of contamination by speckle noise between the reconstruction of the complex hologram and the image captured by a CCD camera. We use the contrast of the speckle pattern for quantitative evaluation.

  • In this paper, we have implemented the digital signal processing system for intruder detection using speckle pattern variation in multi-me optical fiber with hypersensitive and high fidelity. The performance of the implemented system was evaluated by experiments. In order to improve the system performances we applied the adaptive digital filter. In experimental results we could see 96 % intruder detection and 90 % man/car discrimination probability.

  • In this paper, a multiresolution edge detction algorithm for speckle images is proposed. Due to the signal dependency of speckle images, the number of edge points detected depends on the local average intensity. Thus the edge detection method independent of the average intensity is required to detect properly real significant changes in an original signal. In the proposed method, candidate area is first selected based on the statistical propeties of speckle images,i.e., based on the busyness measure such as the CoV(coefficient of variation) and the difference between the real and theoretical CDF(cumulative density function). Then the real edges are extracted in a multiresolution environment. Computer simulation with test images shows that the proposed method reduces significantly false edges in relatively homogeneous areas while detects fine details properly.
