This paper presents a wear analysis procedure for the journal bearings on a stripped-down single-cylinder engine during start-up and coast-down by motoring. A journal bearing is in the mixed elastohydrodynamic (EHL) lubrication region when the shaft speed is less than the corresponding lift-off speed. Below the lift-off speed, a wear scar can form on bearing surfaces. In part 1 of this paper, we develop the appropriate formulations and the calculation procedure for the analysis. Specifically, we formulate an equation for modified film thickness in a journal bearing considering the additional wear volume. In order to obtain the modified specific wear rate induced by the modified Archard’s wear coefficient, we utilized the extended non-dimensional diagram for the specific wear rate, k, the fractional film defect coefficient, Ψ and the asperity load sharing factor, γ2. This asperity load sharing factor is newly calculated by setting the Zhao-Maietta-Chang (ZMC) asperity contact pressure equation coupled with the central film thickness equation derived by using the ZMC asperity contact model equal to the modified central contact pressure derived by using the central (or maximum) contact pressure at the dry rough line-contact configuration. We can use the procedure introduced in this paper to determine the lifetime (or longterm) linear wear in radial journal bearings that is a result of repeated stop-start cycles.
This study examines the wear behavior of mild steel pins mated against alloyed tool steel discs in a pin-on-disc type sliding test machine and provides specific clarification regarding the effects of disc hardness on the wear behavior of a mating mild steel pin. The analysis confirms these effects through the observation of differences in the wear rates of the mild steel pins at low sliding speed ranges. These differences occur even though the hardness of the mating disc does not affect the wear characteristic curve patterns for the sliding speeds, regardless of the wear regime. In the running-in wear regime, increasing the hardness of the mating disc results in a decrease in the wear rates of the mild steel pins at low sliding speed ranges. However, in the steady-state wear region, the wear rate of a pin mated against the 42DISC is greater than the wear rate of a pin mated against the 30DISC, which has a lower hardness value. This means that the tribochemical reactivity of the mating disc, which is based on hardness value, influences the wear behavior of mild steel at low sliding speed ranges. In particular, oxides with higher oxygen contents, such as $Fe_2O_3$ oxides, form predominantly on the worn surface of the 42DISC. On the contrary, the wear behavior of mild steel pins at high sliding speed ranges is nearly unaffected by the hardness of the mating disc.
This paper is to investigate the wear behaviors of two type ceramics, $Al_{2}O_{3}\;and\;TiO_{2}$, by coated plasma thermal spray method under the lubricative environment. The lubricative environments are grease fluids, a general hydraulic fluids, and bearing fluids. The wear testing machine used a pin on disk type. Wear characteristics, which were friction force, friction coefficient and the specific wear rate, according to the lubricative environments were obtained at the four kinds of load and sliding velocity is 0.2 m/sec. After the wear experiments, the wear surfaces of the each test specimen were observed by a scanning electronic microscope.
The present study was undertaken to investigate the dry wear characteristics of die steel STD 11 for cold molding. The wear test was experimentally carried out under different conditions using a wear device, which was made in laboratory, and in which annular surfaces of wear testing specimens wear rubbed in dry sliding condition with varying the sliding speed, contact pressure, and sliding distance. The wear loss by variation of sliding speed was much in 0.3 m/sec and less in higher speed range above its sliding speed according to formation of the boundary lubrication film. The critical sliding speed with maximum value of the specific wear rate switched over to lower speed side according. as contact pressure increased. The critical sliding distance was increased with decrease in oxidation reaction velocity. The depth below subsurface showing maximum hardness (Hv) came out at the position, $60 \mu m$, of the maximum shear stress due to strain hardening.
This research helps secure the safety of snow boarders in an activity that is currently recognized as a minor specific hobby. The research goal is to develop a new board wear product with intensified safety and activity through the development of a safe and convenient snowboard wear that is wearable in ordinary life. The participants consisted of 31 snowboard club members evaluated from January 12 to January 19 at Eden-valley Ski Resort and Phoenix-park Resort in Korea. The result are as follows. First, what domestic snowboard wear consumers consider design difference and brand recognition a significant priority in choosing snowboard wear versus the functionality or safety of clothes. Second, concerning the evaluation of the developed product, they recognize the necessity of safety gear; however, they demand the convenient use of a safety gear with a fixation that can be attached and detached. A unity-type board wear was developed that enables an attachment and detachment that reflects the evaluation results. In conclusion, this research showed various market possibility of board wear into sports casual wear to be able to make it a fashion product through different design and demand of mixing it with general wear rather than functionality or activity, though board wear is a professional sports wear.
This study is concerned with the production of carbon fiber reinforced carbon(C/C) with polyaromatic mesophase pitch as matrix precursor and with the investigation of friction-wear characteristics in ambient air using a constant speed type of friction tester. The main problem in using the polyaromatic mesophase as the matrix precursor is the high viscosity which may limit the complete impregnation of the fiber preform in the vacuum. To solve these problems two dimensional carbon fiber fabrics were infiltrated with meso-phase pitch in the pitch impregnator. After the impregnation and the heat treatment process. C/C com-posites were characterized by density porosity to monitor the influence of high pressure and temperature. It showed that the bulk density was increased and the apparent porosity and the density increasing rate was reduced as repeating the impregnation the carbonization and the heat treatment. The friction-wear charac-teristics of C/C composites were investigated by measuring the average friction coefficient and the specific wear rate as functions friction speed and friction pressure using a constant speed type of friction tester. C/C composite4s showed the average friction coefficient to be reduced as increasing the friction speed and the friction pressure.
The friction and wear behaviors of magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$ films were investigated through the use of a pin and disk type tester. The experiments were performed for two kinds of specimens (ground (Ra 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and polished (Ra 0.01 $\mu\textrm{m}$) substrates) under the following operating condifions : linear sliding velocities in the range of 22~66 mm/s (3 types), normal loads varying from 9.8~29.4 N(3 types) and atmospheric conditions of air, medium and high vacuum (3types). Silicon nitride pin was used as the lower specimen and magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$ on bearing steel disk was used as the upper specimen. The results showed that low friction property of the MoS$_2$ films could be identified in high vacuum and the specific wear rate in air was much higher than that in medium and high vacuum due to severe oxidation. It was found that the main wear mechanism in air was oxidation whereas in high vacuum accumulation of plastic flow and adhesion, were the main causes of wear.
The effect of size and mass fraction of SiC particulate on the fatigue and wear have been investigated for semi-liquid formed SiCp/AZ91HP Mg composites. In the study, different particulate sizes of 7, 20, $50 {\mu}m$ were prepared with various mass fraction for sample preparation. By tension-tension fatigue tests, whose procedures are standardized in ASTM standard 647E-93, the da/dN vs. ${\Delta}K$ curves were obtained. Also, the crack propagation paths were observed by optical microscope. As a result of wear test, specific wear loss is decreased with increasing mass fraction and particulate size. Specific wear loss of 30 mass% $50 {\mu}m$ SiC reinforced Mg composite is compared to SKD11.
The fretting wear behaviour of Zircaloy-4 tube used as the fuel rod cladding in PWR nuclear power plants has been investigated at the different test environment, in light water and in air as a function of slip amplitude, normal load, test duration and frequency. Zircaloy-4 tubes were used for both of oscillating and stationary specimens. A fretting wear tester was designed to be suitable for this fretting test. The wear volume and specific wear rate of Zircaloy-4 tube in water were greater than those in air under various slip amplitude. It was found that delaminate debris and surface cracks were observed at low slip amplitude and high load in water Experimental results showed that the light water accelerated the wear of Zircaloy-4 tube at low slip amplitude in fretting.

Diamond composites hold promise as a tribological material because of low friction and high wear resistance. We studied friction and wear of polyimide-20vol% PTFE-diamond composites in open air at room temperature, focusing on the effects of diamond size, and diamond content, sliding conditions, and mating material. Friction coefficient and wear tend to Increase with increasing diamond size and content. Composites of appropriate diamond size and content showed a friction coefficient below 0.1 and specific wear of $10^{-7}\;mm^3/Nm$. Friction and wear of composites sliding against stainless steel were higher than those of Al_2O_3$ an increase that became increasingly not able with increasing diamond size.
