  • The tribological behavior of an Fe-based bulk amorphous alloy while sliding against a AISI 304 disc is investigated using a unidirectional pin-on-disc type tribometer in dry and distilled water environments. The rod-shaped bulk pins are fabricated by suction casting. The crystallinities of the bulk amorphous alloys before and after the friction tests are determined by X-ray diffraction. The friction coefficient and specific wear rate of the amorphous pin in the water environment are found to be twice and thrice as much as in the dry environment at a low applied pressure, respectively. However, at a higher pressure, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate are 0.4 and 1.02 mg/(Nm/s), respectively, in the water environment. A microstructure analysis shows that the worn surface of the alloy is characterized by delamination from the smooth friction surface, and thus delamination is the main wear mechanism during the friction test in dry sliding environment. In contrast, brittle fracture morphologies are apparent on the friction surface formed in distilled water environment. For the sample tested at a lower sliding speed, the XPS data from the oxide layer are similar to those of the pure element with weak suboxide peaks. For higher sliding speeds, all the main sharp peaks representing the core level binding energies are shifted to the oxide region.

  • The study has been intended to find out meaningful information about the development of a prototype of enhanced maternity girdle. The girdles of three different models which were available in the market have been carried out by three six-month pregnant women and three nine-month pregnant women. The results of the study are as follows. 1. All three girdles showed improved wear effects in order of model A, model B, model C. Body surface area measurement and two body surface angles of abdomen are significantly dicreased by wearing and type of girdles. It is presumed that the reasons of good wear effect of model A is low expansion rate of the material and tight fitness of the model. Model B is made of material whose expansion rate is higher than model A. Also abdominal part of the model B is bias cut which is considered to result better stretch and consequently lower wear effect. 2. For wear comfort, subjects preferred in order of model B, model C, and model A. All subjects feel more comfortable after wearing girdles 30 minutes than after wearing girdles 1 day. Comparing 2 subject groups, 6-month pregnant group feel more comfortable about wearing girdles than 9-month pregnant group. 3. The girdles are expanded as a whole in order of model B, model C and model A. Considering the expansion rate of some specific area of the girdles, abdominal area expands more than hip area which expands more than thigh area. The expansion rates of girdles worn to 6-month pregnant group are very low at all area, while the expansion rates of girdles worn to 9-month pregnant group are very high.

  • Railway wheels and axles are the most critical parts of the railway rolling stock. The wheel carry axle loads and guide the vehicles on the track. Therefore, the contact surface of wheel are subjected to wear and fatigue process. The wheel damage can be divided into three types; wear, contact fatigue failure and thermal crack due to braking. Therefore, in the contact surface between the wheel and the rail, the materials are heat treated to have a specific hardness. The manufacturing quality of the wheel have a considerable influence on the formation of tread wear and damage. Also, the residual stress on wheel is formed during the manufacturing process is one of the main sources of the damage. In this paper, the mechanical characteristic and the residual stress according to wheel material have been evaluated by applying finite element analysis and conducting mechanical tests.

  • In drilling Inconel 601, which is used for compressor cases in aircraft engines, a lot of cutting oil must be supplied. This prevents tools from wear and fracture due to the heat buildup resulting from the high-temperature resistance and toughness of this alloy. However, the cutting oil supply has compromised the machining environment. This has caused attention to shift to an environmentally friendly cutting fluid supply system called the Minimum Quantity Lubrication(MQL) system. The aim of this study was to find a more efficient drill processing method using MQL and to verify its performance. To that end, the properties of Inconel that make it difficult -to -drill were studied by a comparison with the drilling of SM45C. Specific factors (i.e., cutting force and tool wear) were examined in relation to the conditions in the MQL-based drilling system. Based on these results, a sealed cover and step feed were proposed as measures to increase the effectiveness of the MQL system. The efficiency of the proposed method was established.

  • Titanium is one of the most attractive materials due to their superior properties of high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance. The applications in aerospace and medical industries demand machining process more frequently to obtain more precise products. Machining of titanium is faced with strong challenges such as increased component complexity i.e. airframe components manufacturing processes. The machining cost on titanium have traditionally demanded high cutting tool consumable cost and slow machining cycle times. Similarly, the high wear of the cutting tools restricts the cutting process capabilities. Titanium screws applied to fasten parts In the several corrosion environment. In the thread cutting of titanium alloys, the key point for successful work is to select proper cutting methods and tool materials. This study suggests a guidance fur selecting the cutting methods and the tool materials to improve thread quality and productivity. Some experiments investigate surface roughnesses, cutting forces and tool wear with change of various cutting parameters including tool materials, cutting methods, cutting speed. As the results, the P10 type insert tip was assured of the best for thread cutting of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. Also the initial depth of infeed was desirable to use the value below 0.5mm as the uniform cutting area method is applied.

  • In order to improve the low wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, plasma carburization treatment was newly carried out without consumption of its good specific strength and fatigue life over the temperature. Effect of the plasma carburization was analyzed and compared with the non-treated alloy by microstructural observation, structure characterization and mechanical property test. The plasma treated alloy formed a carburized layer of about 150$\mu\textrm{m}$ in depth from the surface, where a fine and hard particles of TiC and $V_4C_3$ were homogeneously dispersed through the layer. It was also found that an increase of the wear resistance, fatigue life and hardness, due to the hard and fine dispersoids.

  • In this study, the microstructure and characterization of an overlay welding layer using Fe-based composite powders are reported. The effects of the number of passes and composition of powders on the microstructure and mechanical properties are investigated in detail. The welding wire and powders are deposited twice on a stainless-steel rod using a laser overlay welding process. The microstructure and structural characterization are performed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties of the first and second overlay layers are analyzed through the micro-Vickers-hardness tester and abrasion wear tester. In the second overlay layer, the hardness and specific wear are approximately 840 Hv and $2.0{\times}10^{-5}mm^3/Nm$, respectively. It is suggested that the increase of the volume fractions of $(Cr,Fe)_7C_3$ and NbC phases in the second welding layer enhances the hardness and wear resistance.
