In this paper the system dynamic influences in actuators with variable stiffness as contemporary used in robotics for safety and efficiency reasons are investigated. Therefore, different configurations of serial and parallel elasticities are modeled by dynamic equations and linearized transfer functions. The latter ones are used to identify the characteristic behavior of the different systems and to study the effect of the different elasticities. As such actuation concepts are often used to reach energy-efficient operation, a power consumption analysis of the configurations is performed. From the comparison of this with the system dynamics, strategies to select and control stiffness are derived. Those are based on matching the natural frequencies or antiresonance modes of the actuation system to the frequency of the trajectory. Results show that exclusive serial and parallel elasticity can minimize power consumption when tuning the system to the natural frequencies. Antiresonance modes are an additional possibility for stiffness control in the series elastic setup. Configurations combining both types of elasticities do not provide further advantages regarding power reduction but an input parallel elasticity might enable for more versatile stiffness selection. Yet, design and control effort increase in such solutions. Topologies incorporating output parallel elasticity showed not to be beneficial in the chosen example but might do so in specific applications.

In this study, the vibration characteristics were theoretically analyzed by modeling a free isotropic rotating disk with an outer periphery with a fixed inner periphery, paying attention to disks used as storage devices for information devices, especially magnetic disks, magneto-optical disks, and compact disks in which the head and disk are non-contact. Iluminate with Composite materials represented by fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) have high specific strength (strength/density) and specific stiffness (narrowness/density). It is used in the elements, and its use is rapidly expanding. Under this circumstance, the disk currently manufactured using an isotropic material made of various plastic materials such as aluminum or polycarbonate as a base material is an extremely anisotropic material made of a composite material, and the circumferential stiffness of the disk is made of reinforcing fibers in the circumferential direction. It is modeled as an anisotropic rotating disk with increased, and its influence on the vibration characteristics is revealed.
This paper presents a method of controlling the stiffness of a tungsten probe for an atomic force microscope (AFM) in order to provide high-quality phase contrast images in accordance with sample characteristics. While inducing sufficient deformation on sample surfaces with commercial Si or $Si_3N_4$ probes is difficult because of their low stiffness, a tungsten probe fabricated by electrochemical etching with appropriately high stiffness can generate relatively large elastic deformation without damaging sample surfaces. The fabrication of the tungsten probe involves two separate procedures. The first procedure involves immersing a tungsten wire with both ends bent parallel to the surface of an electrolyte and controlling the stiffness of the tungsten cantilever by decreasing its diameter using electrochemical etching in the direction of the central axis. The second procedure involves immersing the end of the etched tungsten cantilever in the direction perpendicular to the surface of the electrolyte and fabricating a tungsten tip with a tip radius of 20-50 nm via the necking phenomenon. The latter etching process applies pulse waves every 0.25 seconds to the manufactured tip to improve its yield. Finite element analysis (FEA) of the stiffness of the tungsten probe as a function of its diameter showed that the stiffness of the tungsten probes greatly varies from 56 N/m to 3501 N/m according to the cantilever diameters from $30{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$, respectively. Thus, the proposed etching method is effective for producing a tungsten probe having specific stiffness for optimal use with an AFM and certain samples.
The material for the machine tool structure should have high static stiffiness and damping in its property to improve both the static and dynamic performances. The static stiffness of a machine tool can be inceased by using either higher modulus material in the structure of a machine tool. However, the machine tool structrue with high stiffness but low damping is vulnerable to vibration at the resonance frequencies of the structure . For the high precision and highsped machine tool structure, therefore, the high damping capacity is most important in order to suppress vibration. The damping of a machine tool can not be increased by increasing the static stiffness. The best way to increase the damping capacity of the machine tool structure is to use a composite material which is composed of on material with high stiffness with low damping and another material with low stiffness with high damping. Therefore, in this paper, the bed of the ultra high precision grinding machine for mirror surface machining of brittle materials such as ceramics and composite materials was designed and manufactured with the epoxy concrete material. The epoxy concrete material was prepared by mixing epoxy resin with different size sands and gravels. The modulus, compressive strength, coefficient of thermal expansion, specific heat, and damping factor were measured by varying the compaction ratio, sizes and contents of the ingredients to assess the effect of the processing parameters on the mechanical properties of the material. Based of the measured properties, the prototype epoxy resin concrete bed for the mirror surface CNC grinding machine was designed and manufactured.
The numerical simulation methodologies to evaluate the structural behaviors of prestressed concrete containment vessels (PCCVs) have been substantially developed in recent decades. However, there remain several issues to be investigated more closely to narrow the gap between test results and numerical simulations. As one of those issues, the effects of no stiffness inside unbonded tendon ducts on the behavior of PCCVs are investigated in this study. Duct holes for prestressing cables' passing are provided inside the containment wall and dome in one to three directions for general PCCVs. The specific stress distribution along the periphery of the prestressing duct hole and the loss of stiffness inside the hole, especially in an unbonded tendon system, are usually neglected in the analysis of PCCVs with the assumption that the duct hole is filled with concrete. However, duct holes are not small enough to be neglected. In this study, the effects of no stiffness inside the unbonded tendon system on the behaviors of PCCVs are evaluated using both analytical and numerical approaches. From the results, the effects of no stiffness in unbonded tendons need to be considered in numerical simulations for PCCVs, especially under internal pressure loading.
In machining operations, a burr is an undesirable material formed by plastic deformation in a workpiece. With the ongoing industrial developments, it has become an important issue to efficiently remove burrs. Several deburring methods have been developed to remove specific burrs that require special machining. However, to remove burrs formed while machining at the CNC machining center, deburring tools must be developed. In a previous study, a new deburring tool was developed by the authors. In this study, the influence of the rake angle and stiffness of the new deburring tool was analyzed to improve performance. The theoretical model was driven considering the rake angle and stiffness, and experiments were carried out to validate the model. Especially, conditions based on the designed rake angle and stiffness to effectively remove burrs, which is difficult, at the exit surface were suggested.

Recently, as a result of the application of large and multi-blade propellers with high efficiency for large vessels, the vertical bending stiffness of propulsion shafting system tends to be declined. For some specific vessels, the shaft arrangement leads to the forward stern tube bearing to be omitted, decreasing vertical bending stiffness. In this respect, decreased vertical bending stiffness causes the problem which is the blade order resonance frequency to be placed within the operational rpm range of propulsion shafting system. To verify whirling vibration, the measurement should be carried out covering from operating rpm up to target rpm, however, the range is un-measurable generally. In order to resolve the measurement issue, this study shows the measuring method and the assessment method of relevant natural frequency of whiling vibration by using measured harmonic order component of whirling vibration.
The paper presents the simplified matrix stiffness method for analysis of composite and prestressed beams. The method is based on the previously developed "exact" analysis method that uses the mathematical theory of linear integral operators to derive all relations without any mathematical simplifications besides inevitable idealizations related to the material rheological properties. However, the method is limited since the closed-form solution can be found only for specific forms of the concrete creep function. In this paper, the authors proposed the simplified analysis method by introducing the assumption that the unknown deformations change linearly with the concrete creep function. Adopting this assumption, the nonhomogeneous integral system of equations of the "exact" method simplifies to the system of algebraic equations that can be easily solved. Therefore, the proposed method is more suitable for practical applications. Its high level of accuracy in comparison to the "exact" method is preserved, which is illustrated on the numerical example. Also, it is more accurate than the well-known EM method.
Most of studies on the open section composite beams are confined to the thin composite beams. There are some works focused on the thick composite beams but they are limited only to closed section beams. Therefore, it is required to develop an appropriate model to analyze the thick open section composite beams. In this study, the cantilever beams of two specific lay-up configurations are considered which are the circumferentially asymmetric stiffness (CAS) and circumferentially uniform stiffness (CUS) beams. Under the torsional loading, loading induced deformations are obtained for the thick beams using the suggested model. The model includes coupled stiffness and secondary warping effects. The results are compared with those obtained using thin beam model to observe the thickness effects. Those results are also compared with the finite element analysis results.
