  • Attached algal community and several physico-chemicai characters were investigated at Seokjong hot spring in Chollabukdo in February and in April, 1997. The results of physico-chemicai factors are as follows : water temperatures were varied from 6.5$^{\circ}$C to 32.0$^{\circ}$C; pH range was 6.9 to 7.7; The levels of electric conductivity were 105 $\mu$mhos/cm to 477 $\mu$mhos/cm; chemical oxygen demand(COD) range was 1.5 mg/l to 21.2 mg/l; ammonia concentration was 0.20 mg/l to 8.74 mg/l; nitrate concentrations were 0.36 mg/l to 2.43 mg/l; phosphate concentration was N.D. to 0.52 mg/l; sulfur concentration was 14.6 mg/l to 66.1 mg/l. Attacched algal species were identified. Totally, 63 taxa were classified and composed of 4 phylum, 4 class, 10 order, 17 family and 31 genera. The total biomass of attacched algae was $1.036 \times 10^{7}$ cells/l that composed of $5.39 \times 10^{6}$ cells/l of blue-green algae, $4.05 \times 10^{6}$ cells/l of diatom and $0.93 \times 10^{6}$ cells/l of green algae. The succession of dominant species was Synechocystis thermalis. This could be due to the thermal wastewaters. in biotic indices tests, the values of dominance index(DI) were 0.33 to 0.67 in winter, 0.18 to 0.68 in spring. The values of diversity index(H') were 1.44 to 2.69 in winter, 1.62 to 2.89 in spring. And the values of eveness index (J) were 0.31 to 0.61 in winter, 0.37 to 0.65 in spring.

  • This study aims to determine the community patterns of benthic macroinvertebrates and analyze the relationship between the communities and the water quality in the Pungyeongjeong Stream. We collected the samples four times by season. The number of species was 28 and the dominant species were Cheumatopsyche brevilineata, Hydropsyche kozhantschikovi, Baetis fuscatus, Chironomidae spp., and so on. The range of the dominant index was 0.54 to 0.93 and the mean was 0.77. The range of the diversity index was 0.94 to 2.54, and of the mean index it was 1.75. The ratio of filtering-collectors and clingers got lower, but the ratio of gathering-collectors and sprawlers got higher as collection progressed from the upper stream to the lower stream. The results of the Pearson correlation analysis showed COD, SS, TOC and total coliforms were highly related with biotic indices of benthic macroinvertebrates. The results of cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination showed that the survey sites and periods were divided into three groups. The survey sites were divided into upper stream and middle-lower stream. The survey periods were divided into winter season and other seasons. Distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates showed some characteristics according to various influence factors; however long-term and regular investigations were thought to need analysis and prediction with various statistical methods.

  • The Chuwang valley-Kumunkwangi valley forest in Chuwangsan area was studied to investigate forest structure in relation to altitude and part of slope. Forty eight quadrats were set up in the valley forest along altitude of 470m to 780m and part of the slope. Density and basal area of trees in tree strata decreased as increasing elevation. With increasing elevation the importance values of Quercus mongolica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla increased, while those of Pinus densiflora, Lindera obtussiloba decreased. As going from lower part to upper part of the slope, the importance values of Quercus valiabilis and Lindera obtussiloba increased while those of Fraxius rhynchophylla, Acer mono decreased. Species diversity tended to decreased as going to upper parts of the slope. The range of similarity indices between elevation belts, and parts of the slope were 74.4~84.2% and 68.0~96.3%, respectively. According to importance value and cluster analysis, the studied valley forest was classified into three forest communities of Pinus densiflora-deciduous tree species community of lower part of slope, Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis community of middle and upper part of slope, Pinus densiflora community of the top area.

  • A study has carried out to examine the characteristics of the soil arthropodan communities in the plantations of Korean white pine, Pinus koraiensis. Periodical soil samples were taken from the forests during the period from July, 1986 to June, 1987, except in winter months. The arthropods were extracted by the means of Berlese funnel. The distribution of collembola showed to be aggregated and appeared to be different distribution pattern with the environmental conditions. The structures of the collembolan communities in the soil seemed to reflect the forest conditions; and the diversity of the component species and the fluctuation of the number of individuals showed greater stability with the older plantations than with the younger ones. With young plantation sites, the various indices of the community, however, were affected more by the physical conditions than those of plantations. A great increase in the number of individual occurred in August and the peak densities continued thereafter through October, and these might be related with the reproductive patterns of the component species as well as the temperature and the accumulation of organic materials.

  • Four simple plotting techniques using the distribution of individuals among species were applied and the results discussed to evaluate the methods for detecting organic pollution-induced perturbation in marine benthic communities in Chinhae Bay, Korea: Rarefaction method, Abundance-Biomass Comparison method, Log-Normal Distribution method and Rank-Frequency Diagram method. Their distribution curves offered more information on the community structure than other frequently used diversity indices and distinguished clear evidence of an effect of environmental pollution with gradient. However, the Abundance-Biomass Comparison method could not be considered applicable due to the presence of larger slowly growing K-strategists in a polluted area of the inner Chinhae Bay, Korea.

  • In this study, the seasonal field survey was conducted in Goseong Jaran Bay(22 stations), Geoje Hansan Bay(15 stations) and Jinhae Bay(18 stations). We analyzed the sediment environmental parameters(Chemical Oxygen Demand, Ignition Loss, Acid Volatile Sulfides, Total Organic Carbon) and biotic parameters of macrobenthic polychaetes(number of species, density, diversity, evenness). It had a good correlation between total organic carbon and polychaete diversity(R=0.61, P<0.01), and we made a decision them as representative environmental indices. As a result of that, regarding the criteria in the assessment of farm environment, we suggest concentrations of total organic carbon : Peak Point = 15 mg/g dry, Warning Point = 26 mg/g dry, Contaminated Point = 31 mg/g dry and polychaete diversity : ~2.6(Good), 2.6~2.1(Moderate), 2.1~1.2(Poor) and 1.2~(Bad). This could be a scientific basis to establish the environmental standards for fishery management.

  • The characteristic of fish fauna and distribution by habitat type in the Yanghwa stream were investigated from August, 2008 to June, 2009. During the surveyed period, 30 species belonging 8 families were collected. And there were 10 Korea endemic species(33.3%), including Rhodeus uyekii et and so on. Dominant species was Rhodeus notatus, and subdominant species was Pseudorasbora parva. Dominant species according to habitat type was Pseudorasbora parva in Dam type pool and Channel conected pool, Pseudogobio esocinus(Run), Zacco platypus(Riffle), Rhodeus notatus(Side channel and Substrate type pool), Squalidus gracilis majimae(Meander type pool), and Carassius auratus(Channel unconnected pool), respectively. As a results of community analysis in the Yanghwa Stream, diversity, richness, and abundance indices showed relatively high values, indicating that studied stream have relatively stable community structure. Moreover, cluster and principal component analysis were divided by two groups(lotic and lentic habitats), suggest that species and individuals were different among habitat types.

  • The water spider (Argyroneta aquatica), a rare member of its species, is one of the few insects known to live under water all over the world. In Korea, the water spider can be found only in the Eundae-ri, Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi province, where they are designated as a natural monument. However, loss of habitat is obvious, as the Eundae-ri wetland undergoes hydrarch succession. Loss of habitat has a direct impact on the water spider population. Thus protective measures for the water spider are needed to preserve the water spider habitat. In this study, a sweeping and visual survey of insect species was conducted in the water spider habitat from May to September 2015. The characteristics of each one of the different insect species and the community features were analyzed in this study. A total of 3,929 insects representing 276 species from 13 orders collected for the analysis. The most frequently collected insects from the Order Hemiptera represented 24.2% of total species and 82.3% of the total number of insects. Community analyses showed dominance, diversity, evenness, and richness indices of 0.23, 2.27, 0.41, and 31.2, respectively. Compared with the previous survey data, these results showed that reduction of the spider's wetland habitat caused the most commonly collected insects to adapt and spread to the surrounding terrestrial environment.

  • Fish assemblage of total 325 of Korean peninsula estuaries were surveyed to analyze the characteristics of community structure and diversity by sea areas for three years from 2016 to 2018. The scale (stream width) of Korean estuaries were various (14~3,356 m), and 68.9% of all estuaries showed salinity of less than 2 psu. Total 149 species classified into 52 families of fish were identified, and the dominant and sub-dominant species were Tribolodon hakonensis (relative abundance, RA, 12.5%) and Mugil cephalus (RA, 9.5%), respectively. The estuary of the Korean Peninsula had different physical and chemical habitat environments depending on the sea area, and accordingly, fish community structure also showed statistically significant differences (PERMANOVA, Pseudo-F=26.69, P=0.001). In addition, the NMDS (nonmetric multidimensional scaling) results showed the patterns that indicating fish community difference by sea areas, even though low community similarity within sea area (SIMPER, 21.79~26.39%). The estuaries of east sea areas were distinguished from the others in the aspects of which, the higher importance of migratory fishes and endangered species, and that of brackish species were characterized at south sea estuaries. However, the estuaries of west sea showed higher importance of species that have a relation with freshwater (primary freshwater species, exotic species), which is the result that associating with the lower salinity of west sea estuaries because of the high ratio of closed estuaries(78.2%). The SIMPER analysis, scoring the contribution rates of species to community similarity, also showed results corresponding to the tendency of different fish community structures according to each sea area. So far, In Korea, most studies on fish communities in estuaries have been conducted in a single estuary unit, which made it difficult to understand the characteristics of estuaries at the national level, which are prerequisite for policy establishment. In present study, we are providing fish community structure characteristics of Korean estuaries in a national scale, including diversity index, habitat salinity ranges of major species, distribution of migratory species. We are expecting that our results could be utilized as baseline information for establishing management policies or further study of Korean estuaries.

  • The flora, vegetation structure, distribution of the vascular plants, physico-chemical characteristics of sediment, and nutrient contents of palnts were investigated in the ten disturbed and undisturbed wetlands around the littoral zone of Namgang, Jinju-si, Gyongsangnam-do, Korea from August 7 to August 15 in 1999. 217 taxa of the vascular plants distributed into 2 formas, 26 varieties, 189 species belong to 142 genera under 52 families were sampled or recorded. Dominant species of the undisturbed and the disturbed area were Persicaria thunbergii and Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior, of which importance values were 13.86, and 15.81, respectively. Among 26 species of the naturalized plants, importance value of Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior was highest as 9.54. The ranges of species diversity indices (H') were 1.370~1.819, and highest in the site 1 of the undisturbed area. The ranges of eqitability (J') were 0.779~0.902, and highest in the site 8 of the disturbed area. The ranges of community similarity indices ($CC_s$) were 0.341~0.578 among the ten wetlands, and highest between site 1 and site 2 which were the undisturbed area. The ranges of sediment properties such as pH, conductivity, organic matter, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen were 5.17~7.35, $24.67{\sim}74.33{\mu}mhocm^{-1}$, 1.09~3.82%, 0.0008~0.0034 mg/100g, and 0.06~0.15%, respectively. Nutrient contents of plants such as total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 1.52~2.65% and $0.010{\sim}0.039mg100g^{-1}$, respectively. It was recommended that the establishment of the conservation area was necessary to ensure the habitat for wild life and to maintain the diversity of the vascular hydrophytes and hygrophytes.
