Choosing an appropriate sample unit is a fundamental decision in the design of ecological studies. While numer-ous methods have been developed to estimate organism abundance, they differ in cost, accuracy and precision.Using both field data and computer simulation modeling, we evaluated the costs and benefits associated with twomethods commonly used to sample benthic organisms in temperatc kelp forests. One of these methods, theTargeted Sampling method, relies on different sample units, each "targeted" for a specific species or group ofspecies while the other method relies on coefficients that represent ranges of bottom cover obtained from visual esti-mates within standardized sample units. Both the field data and the computer simulations suggest that both meth-ods yield remarkably similar estimates of organisnm abundance and among-site variability, although the Coefficientmethod slightly underestimates variability armong sample units when abundances are low. In contrast, the twomethods differ considerably in the effort needed to sample these communities; the Targeted Sampling requiresmore time and twice the persormel to complete. We conclude that the Coeffident Sampling metliod may be bettcrfor environmental monitoring programs where changes in mean abundance are of central conccm and resources arelimiting, but that the Targeted sampling methods may be better for ecological studies where quantitative reIation-ships among species and small-scale variability in abundance are of central concern.
The life-cycle and seasonal abundance of Anaulaciulus koreanus koreanus was studied at Hwang-dong, Chonbuk Province, Korea from October 1990 to February 1992. The egg hatches in spring and the pupoid stage is passed through within the egg shell. The juvenile develops as far as stadium IX by the third year following the birth. Pairing and oviposition take place in the fourth year spring when females are at stadium XI. They seem to live one or two years more after egg-laying. Anamorphosis was observed in this species. Abundance of A. koreanus koreSanus increases from April to May when there appears thefirst peak. It fals gradualy thereafter and the species spends summer months underground from July to September. The second peak appears in October and the activity decreases again in November getting ready to overwinter. The first peak arises from a large number of individuals of 2 and 3 year old overwintered plus newly hatched spring juveniles, and the second from 1 to 3 years old wanderings. Inactivity observed in the species during summer and winter seasons appears to be a temporal due to the extreme temperatures.
The zooplankton of Chonsu Bay was collected and analyzed to study the seasonal variation in species composition and abundance, and to estimated the total annual production of Copepoda. With a pronounce seasonal fluctuations in species composition and abundance, Paracalanus indicus and Corycaeus affinis predominated during summer and fall, while larger species such as Centropages abdominalis and Acartia dominated in spring. Zooplankton abundance showed the minimum in March, then increased and reached the maximum in August. It is suggested that seasonal variation of zooplankton as well as temperature. Being productive compared with other areas, the estimated total production of Copepoda was 134 g/100m$^3$/yr (dry weight).

Based on both field and laboratory experiments, seasonal changes in the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton in the gut contents of the jedo venus clam, Protothaca jedoensis, and its feeding selectivity were investigated. The phytoplankton in the gut contents comprised Bacillariophyceae (diatom), Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, and Dinophyceae, of which the diatoms being the most predominant throughout the year. Although the number of species and the abundance of phytoplankton in the sea water were always more diverse and more abundant than in the gut contents, the relative number and abundance were generally similar in the seawater and in the gut contents. In the laboratory experiments, the relative abundances of Coscinodiscus marginatus and Thalassirosira eccentrica were much more higher in the gut contents than any other algal species, while Paralia sulcata, Skeletonema costatum, and Eucampia zodiacus were abundant in order of cell density in the ambient water. These results suggest that P. jedoensis may feed preferably on single algal cell or smaller chains of algal cells.

A study for species composition and abundance of the fish assemblages in the coastal Sacheon Bay, Korea were conducted using monthly collection by a shrimp beam trawl from March 2015 to February 2016. The number of individuals, biomass and species diversity indices fluctuated with the station and month. Of all 73 species collected, the dominant species in terms of numbers were Liparis tanakae, Zoarces gillii, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, Ricuzenius pinetorum and Pleuronichys cornutus. The peak number of fishes occurred in March and April, whereas the biomass of fishes was highest in April. The numbers and biomass of fishes were lower in February corresponding with the low temperature, and diversity indices were highest in June. Due to those seasonal difference in abundance of the dominant species, fish community were divided into three main groups. In addition, seasonal difference by station of fish community were devided into four main groups. Juvenile fishes of coastal Sacheon were presented during the study period. It presented that the study area served as an important role in spawning and nursery ground for fisheries resource.
The fluctuation in the abundance and species composition of fish was investigated using a fyke net with entrances on both sides in the coastal waters of Geumo-do, Yeosu, Chollanam-do, Korea, from May 2003 to April 2004. A total of 2,379 fishes (392.13 kg) were sampled and classified into 11 orders, 34 families, and 53 species. The dominant orders were Perciformes, Scorpaeniformes, and Pleuronectiformes, which accounted for 67.9% of the collected fishes. The dominant species was Acanthopagrus schlegelii (235 individuals, 19.00 kg), followed by Konosirus punctatus (182 individuals, 9.53 kg), and Apogon lineatus (161 individuals, 1.69 kg). The number of individuals and biomass were higher in spring and summer than in winter, and the monthly variation may be related to the water temperature. The diversity index was highest in September (H'=2.9) and lowest in December (H'=1.8). The evenness index was highest in August (J=0.9) and lowest in December (J=0.7). The dominance index was highest in December (D=0.7) and lowest in August (D=0.2). The economically important species in this area are Acanthopagrus schlegelii, Konosirus punctatus, Lateolabrax maculatus, Argyrosomus argentatus, Trichiurus lepturus, Lateolabrax japonicus, and Sebastes schlegelii.
In order to study the seasonal characteristics of species composition and abundance, zooplankton samples were collected from April 1987 to June 1988 with bimonthly intervals in the Mid-Eastern part of the Yellow sea. Among the 24 species of 18 genera occurred in this study area, 17 species are copepods. Noctiluca scintillant has greatly influenced on the distribution of the zooplankton in the coastal area and some copepods may be excluded by its great occurrence. the seasonal variation of abundance of copepods accounting for 30-63.4% of total zooplankton were more varied among stations in the coastal area than in the offshore. It suggests that environmental factors are more variable in the coastal area than in the offshore. In the Copepod community, Acartia omorii, Paracalanus parvus and Corycaeus affinis were predominant in April and June, from August to December and in December, respectively. Sagita enflata as a Kuroshio indicator species, occurred in the study area from August to December. The great occurrence of warm water species, Doliolum sp. in October and the occurrence of Sagitta enflata from August to December suggested that there is a influx of the tributaries of Kuroshio current into the study area. It appeared that the seasonal characteristics of species composition and abundance of zooplankton were affected by the seasonal variation of water mass.
Information on butterflies in the Niger Delta Region is relatively scanty because monitoring of their activities and distribution has not been fully documented and these are paramount to establish their conservation protocols. The study therefore aimed at evaluating the species richness distribution pattern, and relative abundance of butterflies in the University of Port Harcourt. The University Park was purposively selected for this study. The park was stratified into three different habitat types (secondary forest, farmland, and residential/garden). A sampling of each stratum was done three times; twice in the morning between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm as well as once in the evening between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm along a 100 m line transects for 16 months (May 2017-August 2018). Data collected were analyzed for species diversity indices, evenness, and similarity index. A total of 1,932 individual butterflies belonging to 28 species, 18 genera, and five 5 families were identified in the study area. Species diversity and evenness were higher on farmland (1-D=0.909; H'=2.615; E=0.833), and least in the residential area/gardens (1-D=0.744; H'=1.975; E=0.659). The family Nymphalidae (39.0%) had the highest number of species occurrence while Hesperidae (0.4%) had the lowest composition. Anthene larydas (24.12%) had the highest relative abundance in the entire study area, followed by Acraea serena (17.49%). The study, therefore, recommends continuous monitoring of butterfly species diversity and composition also in other regions.
Seasonal fluctuation in abundance and species composition of fish in coastal waters off Dolsan island were investigated using seasonal samples collected by an otter trawl in 2012. A total of 4,848 fishes were sampled and classified into 52 species, 29 families, and 7 orders. The dominant species was Leiognathus nuchalis (2,786 individuals, 57.5%), Amblychaeturichthys hexanema (164 individuals, 3.4%), and Ilisha elongata (141 individuals, 2.9%). The highest number of individuals was found in summer (2,174 individuals), while the lowest number of individuals was found in winter (321 individuals). The diversity index was the highest in spring (H'=3.06) and the lowest in summer and fall (H'=1.77). Temperature was the principal factor to determine the collected number of individuals (r=0.94) and the number of species (r=0.83).

The spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton community was investigated in Kyeonggi Bay with monthly samples from February 2001 to December 2001 at 5 stations along a transect between Incheon coastal waters and Seongap-Do. Monthly mean abundance of total zooplankton ranged from 1,100(Feb.)∼404,200 indiv./㎥ (Aug.) and annual mean abundance of total zooplankton was 55,000 indiv./㎥. The spatial mean abundance of total zooplankton varied from 114,600 indiv./㎥ (Incheon coastal waters) to 16,500 indiv./㎥ (Seongab-Do). Zooplankton abundance was higher in the inner bay than in the outer bay. Noctiluca scintillans, Acartia hongi, Oithona davisae, Paracalanus crassirostris, Paracalanus indicus and Oikopluera spp. were dominant species in Kyeonggi Bay and they contributed 95% of annual mean abundance of total zooplankton. Most of dominant species distributed widely in study area throughout the year, however seasonal abundance peak only happened in inner part of the Bay. This pattern suggests that the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton is affected by the variations of water temperature and phytoplankton standing stock.
