  • This study aimed to analyze the effect of total allowable catches (TACs) on the target species. First to effects analyse of TACs, the 8 TAC target species and 75 non-target species were selected for which catch data were available before and after the introduction of the TACs. The 8 target species were simply compared to catch changes before and after TACs. Through the comparison, it was confirmed how the catches of target fishes have changed after the implementation of the TACs. Secondly, the Difference In Differences(DID) analysis was conducted to confirm the effects of the TACs on the catches of the target fishes using the catch data of 8 TAC target species and 75 non-TAC species. Finally, to overcome the limitations of the DID analysis, the random effects model was estimated to confirm the effects of the TACs on the catch of the TAC target species. Overall, this study confirmed that the TACs affects catches of target species, not only through simple comparisons of catches before and after the introduction of the TACs but also through econometric analysis.

  • Dermaptera was investigated, examined and reviewed in taxonomy and for distribution in Youngnam region. Based on the data, the local species groups were measured to choose priority-conservation-area by taxonomic root weighting and distribution analysis at 232 geographical conservation units. Eleven species belonging to 4 families and 8 genera were recorded mounting up to 68.75% of species diversity known in Korea. Found remarkably were the rare and endangered Challia fletcheri Burr at Sobaek Mountain National Park, and unusually Anisolabis maritima (Bonelli) in Taegu, Euborellia pallipes (Shiraki) at Island Geoje and E. plebeja (Dohrn) at Hwanho near Pohang. The highest species diversity was found at the temple Huibang area at Sobaek Mountain National Park with 8 species, which was measured also as the primary priority-conservation-area with 83.41 % of accumulated taxonomic root weighting indices in percentage. Geoje and Hwanho both measured as 12.18% of accumulated taxonomic root weighting index in percentage and complimentary to Sobaek Mountain National Park but supporting 5 and 3 species, respectively. The priority goes to the geographical conservation unit supporting higher species richness between two geographical conservation units in comparison. By the rule, the second priority-conservation-area should be Geoje and the third Hwanho. It is, thus, demonstrated how 11 species can be all conserved by choosing 3 priority-conservation-areas out of 232 geographical conservation units to maintain maximum species in minimum areas.

  • Anopheles fluviatilis James (Oiptera: Culicidae) is one of the known malaria vectors in south and southeastern Iran. Earlier ITS2 sequences analysis of specimens from Iran demonstrated only a single genotype that was identical to species Y in India, which is also the same as species T. We identified 2 haplotypes in the An. fluviatilis populations of Iran based on differences in nucleotide sequences of D3 domain of the 28S locus of ribosomal DNA (rDNA). Comparison of sequence data from 44 Iranian specimens with those publicly available in the Genbank database showed that all of the 288-D3 sequences from Kazeroun and Khesht regions in Fars Province were identical to the database entry representing species U in India. In other regions, all the individuals showed heterozygosity at the single nucleotide position, which identifies species U and T. It is argued that the 2 species may co-occur in some regions and hybridize; however, the heterozygosity in the 288-D3 locus was not reflected in ITS2 sequences and this locus for all individuals was identical to species T. This study shows that in a newly diverged species, like members of An. fluviatilis complex, a single molecular marker may not be sufficiently discriminatory to identify all the taxa over a vast geographical area. In addition, other molecular markers may provide more reliable information for species discrimination.

  • A newly recorded species Caprella mutica Schurin, 1935 belonging to the family Caprellidae Leach, 1814 was collected from the East Sea, Korea. Caprella mutica is native to the north-east Asia but is a well-known cosmopolitan and invasive species in many areas. This species is morphologically highly similar to C. acanthogaster Mayer, 1890. However, it is distinguished from a combination of the characteristics of the head, pereonites 1-2, and gnathopod 2. In this study, the Korean C. mutica is fully illustrated based on the mature specimens and compared to C. acanthogaster.

  • Taxonomic relations among three species of some edible fleshy fungi(Lentinus edodes, Pleurotus ostreatus, Flammulina velutipes) in the family Tricholomataceae were examined by using polyacrylamied gel disc electrophoresis. The soluble, crude extract of mycelium grown on potato sucrose broth was subjected to electrophoresis. Similarities in the protein bands for each isolated of one species were compared with those for others. In the banding patterns there was a closer relationship between isolates within one species than among isolates of different species. However, the isozyme patterns obtained from each isolate of Peurotus ostreatus (esterase, peroxidase, tyrosinase) were appeared to represent the degree of geographical variability within one species.

  • Comparative morphology of winter buds of 16 species of gymnosperms which belong to six families and 13 genera was investigated. All the species examined except Taxaceae had bracts and ovuliferous scales in female buds, and the bract was fused with ovuliferous scale in various degrees. Comparison of the modern conifers with fossil ones in the position of ovule and structure of bract-scale complex suggested that Taxaceae should be placed in Coniferales, rather than treating as a distinct order. The disposition of bract surrounding the ovules of Cephalotaxus and Torreya indicated that the origin, of ovules had separate evolutionary line in spite of similar structure of female bud. The shape of microsporophyll in male bud was diverse among the species. The dehiscence of microsporangium was transverse in Abies and Tsuga, while longitudinal in other species. Descriptions and key to the species based on bud morphology were provided.

  • In fungi known as ascomycetes, ability to mate is controlled by a single mating type (MAT) locus with two dissimilar sequences called idiomorphs carrying genes encoding transcription factors that are unrelated to each other. Fungi requiring strains with different MAT genes to complete the sexual process are heterothallic (self-sterile); species in which as single strain is able to undergo sexual reproduction are homothallic (self-fertile). Previous analysis of sequences from several heterothallic and homothallic species of the ascomycete genus Cochliobolus showed that homothallics evolve from heterothallics and that each known Cochliobolus homothallic species arose independently, from a different heterothallic ancestral species. Here we report detailed comparative analyses of MAT sequences ad their flanking regions, and show that: (1) The level of MAT gene similarity is not correlated with reproductive life style; (2) MAT proteins from all Cochliobolus species are conserved within the transcription factor signature sequences; they are not conserved in the carboxy terminal half of MAT-1, or third of MAT-2, except in those from very closely related species; (3) A gene (ORF1) of unknown function, consistently found on the MAT flank, is more conserved than are the MAT genes themselves; (4) The intergenic sequences diverge sharply among species.

  • Selaginella vaginata is a common montane species with broad distribution in China and the Himalaya region, and several species that are morphologically similar to S. vaginata are distributed in Asia. The taxonomic revision of S. vaginata and related species was performed by morphological comparison of leaves, strobili, and spores, and phylogenetic analysis. Based on these results, a new species, S. subvaginata, sp. nov., has been identified. Morphologically, S. subvaginata has intermediate form between S. vaginata and S. repanda, which differs mainly in its main stem being erect, dorsal leaves long-ciliolate on inner margin and outer margin denticulate or with 2-4 cilia at base (long-ciliolate on both inner and outer margins in S. vaginata, denticulate on both inner and outer margins in S. repanda), and acroscopic base of ventral leaves long ciliolate (sparsely long ciliolate in S. vaginata, short ciliolate to denticulate in S. repanda). Moreover, phylogenetic analysis using three chloroplast markers(rbcL, atpI, and psbA) revealed that S. subvaginata is a distinct species among the anisosporophyllous species clade in Selaginellaceae.

  • We investigated fish species composition seasonally at the intake and discharge of Weolseong Nuclear Power Plant (WS-NPP) from February to November 2008 using a trammel net. At the intake, 121 individuals belonging to 28 species were collected, and 157 fish from 34 species were sampled at the WS-NPP discharge. Dominant species at the intake were Chelidonichthys spinosus (17.2%), Scomber japonicus (11.5%) and Ditrema temminckii (8.2%) at the intake, while Sillago japonica (18.5%), Chelidonichthys spinosus (13.4%) and Konosirus punctatus (8.3%) dominated at the discharge. The species count and diversity index at the discharge were highest during winter, whereas those at the intake were highest during spring, perhaps due to warm seawater at the discharge site. This study is the first to reveal an effect of effluent water on the aggregation of warm water fish species during winter.
