  • The purpose of this article is to examine correlation between femoral rotational angle and subjective satisfaction of high tibial osteotomy outcome of the range of motion of knee joint. The subjects were 15 patients (6 males, 9 females) with primary osteoarthritis undergoing high tibial osteotomy from June of 2004 to August of 2008. They were CT tested on the knee joint before and after high tibial osteotomy. TEA (Fig. 1) and Akagi's line (Fig. 2) are analyzed as percentages. The Kendall's and Spearman's nonparametric correlation coefficient were used for the statistical tests with 0.5 level of significance. The result reveals that femoral rotational angle correlates with not the range of motion of knee joint but subjective satisfaction of the patients. Therefore, this will enable patients and physicians to have better clinical outcome.

  • We investigate the correlation between the peak energy and the burst duration using available long GRB data with known redshift, whose circumburst medium type has been suggested via afterglow light curve modeling. We find that the peak energy and the burst duration of the observed GRBs are correlated both in the observer frame and in the GRB rest frame. For our total sample we obtain, for instance, the Spearman rank-order correlation values ${\sim}0.75\;and\;{\sim}0.65$ with the chance probabilities $P=1.0{\times}10^{-3}\;and\;P=6.0{\times}10^{-3}$ in the observer frame and in the GRB rest frame, respectively. We note that taking the effects of the expanding universe into account reduces the value a bit. We further attempt to separate our GRB sample into the 'ISM' GRBs and the 'WIND' GRBs according to environment models inferred from the afterglow light curves and apply statistical tests, as one may expect that clues on the progenitor of GRBs can be deduced directly from prompt emission properties other than from the ambient environment surrounding GRBs. We find that two subsamples of GRBs show different correlation coefficients. That is, the Spearman rank-order correlation are ${\sim}0.65\;and\;{\sim}0.57$ for the 'ISM' GRBs and 'WIND' GRBs, respectively, after taking the effects of the expanding universe into account. It is not yet, however, statistically very much significant that the GRBS in two types of circumburst media show statistically characteristic behaviors, from which one may conclude that all the long bursts are not originated from a single progenitor population. A larger size of data is required to increase the statistical significance.

  • The sleep measurement system is important to detect sleep disturbances as early as possible to be diagnosed and treat the diseases quickly. This paper presents design of system to measure the quality of sleep by using nine accelerometer sensors embedded in the pillow to detect the acceleration of limb movement, e.g. head movements. The participants were asked to sleep using a smart pillow for five days. While sleeping, participants are recorded using a camera on a computer. After awakening, participants were asked to fill out a post-sleep questionnaire. Spearman's correlation was performed to test the correlation of gross body movement per minute rate with post-sleep questionnaire questions. Finally, the seven score of sleep quality were tested with gross body movement per minute rate. The result is the higher gross body movement per minute during sleep represented lower sleep quality.

  • Background : Chlamydia pneumoniae is a clinically important pathogen, the diagnosis of such infection being based mainly on serology. Microimmunofluorescence (MIF) is the current standard diagnostic method, but is subjective and time-consuming, so the authors tested the serology of chronic cough patients using an EILSA method for the Chlamydial antibody, which is a more objective method, and compared the results with those of the standard method. Method : Thirty-five patients, who visited Kangwon National University Hospital between August 2003 and July 2004, were evaluated. A MIF and ELISA tests were used to determine C. pneumoniae antibody titers. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The Spearman rank correlation test was used for data analysis. Results : Sensitivities of ELISA for IgG, IgA and IgM, as judged by MIF, were 84.0, 84.0 and 40.0% and the specificities were 60.0, 60.0 and 96.7%, respectively. Three patients were Chlamydia PCR positive. Conclusion : ELISA can be a useful tool for studying the seroprevalence of Chlamydia pneumoniae. However, further studies will be required prior to its clinical use.

  • Purpose: We measured the Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Index (OLBPDI) and related factors in patients with low back pain. Methods: The sample consisted of 50 patients who received physical therapy at the physical therapy units of the Andong Seoul Sintong Clinic, St. Luke Clinic, and Yeongju Seoul Sintong Clinic in Andong and Yeongju city from October, 2007, to February, 2008. The OLBPDI questionnaire was administered by 5 physical therapists as a cross-sectional study. Student's t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA/Tukey and Scheffe) were used to analyze OLBPDI score differences. We also used nonparametric statistic analysis (Wilcoxon rank sum test, Median test). Pearson correlation analysis (Spearman correlation analysis) was used to analyze the relationship between OLBPDI and the visual analogue scale (VAS). Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of independent variables on pain scores as defined by the OLBPDI. Results: The average patient age was 37.1 years (range: 18$\sim$78 years old), and time from onset was 21.7 months (1$\sim$180). OLBPD and VAS scores were 12.70 (3.0$\sim$28.0) and 5.14 (1$\sim$8), respectively. OLBPDI scores were 14.4 in patients taking medicine and 11.57 in those who did not. There was a statistically significant relationship between OLBPDI and VAS (r=0.54, p=0.0001; r=0.55, p=0.0001 by Spearman coefficient). Gender ($\beta$=6.14, p=0.0124), age ($\beta$=-2.01, p=0.0324), weight ($\beta$=0.31, p=0.0222), time from onset ($\beta$=1.54, p=0.0044), and VAS score ($\beta$=1.59, p=0.0004) were significantly associated with OLBPD by multiple regression analysis. Conclusion: Variables associated with OLBPD were gender, age, weight, time from onset, and VAS score. Collecting information on the pain index using OLBPDI was acceptable to patients with low back pain. Further research should explore the pain index by using larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate if the 7-item Berg balance scale (BBS) 3-point, which is a short form of the BBS (SFBBS), has compatible psychometric properties in comparison with the original BBS, and also to study the concurrent validity using a 10-meter walk test (10mWT) and a timed up and go test (TUG), which are widely used with SFBBS in clinical settings. Methods: A total of 255 patients who had experienced stroke participated in this cross-sectional study. We used results obtained from 188 patients who completed both 10mWT and TUG. The three levels in the center of the BBS were collapsed to a single level (i.e.,0-2-4) to form the SFBBS. The concurrent validity was assessed by computing the Spearman coefficients for correlation among outcome measures and in between each outcome measure and the SFBBS. As there were four outcomes, the corrected p-value for significant correlation was 0.013 (0.05/4). Results: Spearman coefficients for correlations and evaluation instruments for concurrent validity revealed significantly high validity for both of SFBBS and BBS (r=0.944). 10mWT and TUG were -0.749 and -0.770 respectively, which are in the high margin and are statistically significant (p>0.000). Conclusion: SFBBS has sound psychometric properties for evaluating patients with stroke. Thus, we recommend the use of SFBBS in both clinical and research settings.

  • Rapid evolutions in recent years related to IT (information technology) which has been exceedingly developed make it possible to utilize its application in broad fields as providing a convenient way to gather and to reuse information. As smart phones have been sporadic nowadays which boost increase of SNS in real-time making more dynamic, it is becoming more worthful as a marketing tool in the field of fashion area. In this study, we have explored some case studies in which they are actively using Facebook. We have selected 10 fashion brands to compare their activities in boards containing 'notice', 'like this', 'people talking about this' and 'event'. We also conduct the correlation analysis between the indicators above, using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. As a consequence, we can confirm that 'notice' highly correlates with 'like this', but we cannot find any other correlations between the other factors. As a reasult, marketing in Facebook is more efficient communication way between the companies and customers than using other current mass media, it shows that SNS in fashion marketing could be an innovative solution to overcome current limitations caused probably by lack of communications.

  • Objectives: Ryodoraku diagnosis has been used frequently since Nakatani invented it in 1950. There are many papers about how to use Ryodoraku diagnosis in many diseases, but there are no studies about the repeatability and reproducibility of the Ryodoraku score. The aim of this study was to investigate the repeatability and reproducibility of the Ryodoraku score. Materials and Methods: There were four examiners who trained for more than a month, and the number of subjects was twenty. Each of the examiners made Ryodoraku diagnosis for ten subjects three times. We analyzed data by SPSS, used Friedman test, Wilcoxon signer rank test and Spearman correlation test. Results: 1. There was no significant difference between first, second, and third Ryodoraku score by Friedman test in examiners A, B, C, and D, so there was repeatability. 2. There was very high correlation on first, second, third Ryodoraku score by Spearman correlation test in examiners A, B, C, and 0, so there was repeatability. 3. There was high ICC among Ryodoraku score by examiners B, C, and D, so there was reproducibility. 4. After observing four examiners' Ryodoraku diagnoses, we could see the discord of measure points, the amount of hydration before examination, the amount of pressure, examination time, or positions of subjects diagnosed with Ryodoraku incorrectly. Conclusion: There is repeatability and reproducibility of Ryodoraku diagnosis. However, it is still important that one examiner carry out the diagnosis if possible. When there are two or more examiners, they should train extensively and follow manuals.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a computer software program for nutritional assessment using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQs) and the 24-hour Recall Method. The software for the SQFFQ was divided into input, output, and database. For dietary analyses, recipe and food databases were used. The recipe database included 25 items and the food database was divided into 18 food groups. The food database was composed of 19 general nutrient items, 33 fatty acids, and 18 amino acids. The software developed in this study can be summarized as follows: 1) input items related to the individual s ages information, lifestyle, biological values, and dietary habits; 2) individualized data in percent of the Korean RDA, the energy ratios of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, the ratio of animal to plant source intakes, and the distribution of food group intakes; 3) Statistical data on the individual's information, lifestyle, biological values, and dietary intakes including the frequency of intake of cooked foods, the amounts of food, and the number of food groups, and nutrients. In the 24-hour Recall Method, the input and output consisted of the individual s information and cooked dish intakes. The individual s report included the amounts of nutrient intake according to number of meal and days, in comparison to the Korean RDA, the energy ratio for carbohydrates, proteins and fats, the ratio of animal to plant source intakes, and the distribution of food group intakes. The statistical report presented the number of food groups and foods, and the nutrient intakes. To evaluate the validity of the SQFFQ, the Spearman Rank Order Correlation and kappa values were used. As a result, correlation coefficients comparing the 24-hour Recall Method appeared to be more than 0.5, except for vitamin $B_1, B_2$, niacin, and vitamin E. The kappa values for energy and carbohydrate intakes were both 0.7, and protein, fat, vitamin C, folate, Ca, and iron intakes ranged from 0.3 to 0.7.
