  • Purpose: Until now, students wrote only differential diagnoses and plans during the interstation work (IW) portion of clinical performance examinations (CPX). The contents of history taking (Hx) and the physical examination (PE) were only evaluated using checklists. This study addressed the correlations of Hx and PE scores from the checklists and the subsequent IW to research the necessity of adding Hx and PE sections in to the IW. Methods: One hundred and thrity-three students participated in a ten case CPX, and eight cases were used in this study. Immediately following the 12 minute patient encounter, students were given 6 minutes to write the IW. For the Hx and PE section, students were instructed to write the findings that they considered key information in approaching the patient's problem. The Hx and PE sections of the IW were scored using the same items that appeared on the SP checklist. Calculations of Spearman's rho were performed to find the relationship between the checklist scores and IW scores of Hx and PE sections. Results: Correlations of Hx and PE scores between the SP checklists and IW were low to moderate. Across the eight cases, the median Spearman's rho was 0.37 with a range of 0.14 to 0.54. Conclusion: We suggest that, because SP checklist scores measure only what information the students gather, but not their reasons for doing so (e.g.: relative importance), students tend gather very specific information from the patients. By analyzing of their IW, we were able to explore how students prioritize the important information they have obtained from the patients.

  • This study evaluated the validity and reliability of applying a newly developed dish-based, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for Korean diet and cancer research. The subjects in the present study were 288 Korean adults over 30 years of age who had completed two FFQs and four 3-day diet records (DRs) from May 2008 to February 2009. Student's t-tests, Chi-square tests, and Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were used to estimate and compare intakes from different dietary assessment tools. Agreement in quintiles was calculated to validate agreement between the results of the second FFQ (FFQ-2) conducted in February 2009 and the DRs. Median Spearman's correlation coefficients between the intake of nutrients and foods assessed by the FFQ-1 and FFQ-2 were 0.59 and 0.57, respectively, and the coefficients between the intake of nutrients and foods assessed by the FFQ-2 and the DRs were 0.31 and 0.29, respectively. The quintile classifications of same or adjacent quintile for intake of nutrients and foods were 64% and 65%, respectively. Misclassification into opposite quintiles occurred in less than 5% for all dietary factors. Thus this newly-developed, Korean dish-based FFQ demonstrated moderate correspondence with the four 3-day DRs. Its reliability and validity are comparable to those reported in other studies.

  • Background: Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) in patients using oral anticancer treatment are more common than in those using injectable anticancer agents. In addition, DDIs related to anticancer treatment are known to cause clinically significant outcomes, such as treatment failure and severe toxicity. To prevent these negative outcomes, significant DDIs are monitored and managed using the information provided in drug databases. We aimed to evaluate the consistency of information on clinically significant DDIs for tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) between representative drug databases. Methods: We selected clinically significant DDIs involving medications that are co-prescribed with TKIs and met the following criteria: the severity level of DDIs was equal or greater than "D" in Lexicomp® or "major" in Micromedex®. We then analyzed the consistency of the severity classification and evidence level between the drug databases. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to identify the relationship between DDI information in the drug databases. Results: In total, 627 DDI pairs were identified as clinically significant; information on these was provided by Lexicomp® and Micromedex® for 571 and 438 pairs, respectively, and both drug databases provided information on 382 DDI pairs. There was no correlation between the severity and evidence level of DDIs provided in the two databases; Spearman's correlation coefficient for Lexicomp® and Micromedex® was -0.009 (p=0.861) and -0.064 (p=0.209), respectively. Conclusion: To judge the significance of DDIs, healthcare providers should consider that the information on DDIs may be different between drug information databases; hence, clinical factors must be considered concurrently.

  • Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a technology that controls computer and transmits intention by measuring and analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG) signals generated in multi-channel during mental work. At this time, optimal EEG channel selection is necessary not only for convenience and speed of BCI but also for improvement in accuracy. The optimal channel is obtained by removing duplicate(redundant) channels or noisy channels. This paper propose a dual filter-based channel selection method to select the optimal EEG channel. The proposed method first removes duplicate channels using Spearman's rank correlation to eliminate redundancy between channels. Then, using F score, the relevance between channels and class labels is obtained, and only the top m channels are then selected. The proposed method can provide good classification accuracy by using features obtained from channels that are associated with class labels and have no duplicates. The proposed channel selection method greatly reduces the number of channels required while improving the average classification accuracy.

  • The purpose of study was to compare the laser fluorescence detection by Diagnodent(KaVo, Germany), visual inspection using dental explorers, and conventional dental radiography as diagnostic tests for dental caries. One hundred and three human premolars and molars which had no caries or fissure caries were tested by the three methods. Diagnodent scores increased as the scores of the other two tests increased(P<0.01) There were significant relationships between visual inspection scores and Diagnodent scores(Pearson 0.676, Spearman 0.694) and between radiography scores and Diagnodent scores(Pearson 0.623, Spearman 0.658) (P<0.01, all). Diagnodent test proved to have high sensitivity and low specificity and more studies are necessary to present the diagnostic criteria for progressive caries stages.

  • Recent development and penetrating expansion in ICT(Information and Communication Technology) has brought considerable improvements in transportation services. However, there is a controversial debate whether transportation and communications behave as substitutes or as complements to one another. On this subject, recent studies considered those two industries as services, but transportation and communications are broadly put for intermediary goods into other industries. Hence, it is essential to examine this issue from understanding their relationships to each other with respect to manufacturing and services. In this study, input-output tables of benchmark years from 1980 to 2005 have been analysed to explore the relationships between transportation and communications using Spearman's correlation analysis. The results show that both industries had complementary roles over the period, but, to some extent, changed into substitution roles in some categories.

  • This study explored the effectiveness of the online English learning program contents for elementary school students. The study used the online English learning program served by Gyeonggi province office of education. 107 students attending P elementary school in K city volunteered for the program. After studying English via the website for almost one year, they were asked to respond the questionnaires related to the contents of the online English program. Since the research investigated that the relations of students' grades, the time for the study, their diagnostic test scores, and the effectiveness of the contents, the survey responses were analyzed with Spearman correlation. As a result, older students thought that the type of problem-solving, the type of performing a task, WBI (Web Based Instruction) were not efficacious. Also, these types of online English program were chosen as ineffective from the students at the higher level. Whereas the type of private lesson, the lessons based on a story, and the type of animation were preferred to the students who spent longer time on the website. This highlights the need to consider the students' characteristics such as students' grades, the time for the study, and their English level when developing the contents of the online English learning program.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop a dish-based semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for Korean adolescents and evaluate its reproducibility and validity. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Based on 24-hour dietary recall data from the 4th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), we developed a FFQ with 71 items. From a quota sample of 160 adolescents recruited using gender and age group as stratification variables, 153 participated in the complete data collection process. The FFQ was administered to each subject twice, at an interval of 3-4 weeks, to evaluate the test-retest reliability. The validity of the FFQ was assessed relative to 8-day food record data. RESULTS: The study findings demonstrated the FFQ's satisfactory reproducibility. Spearman correlation coefficients ranged from 0.64(for ${\beta}-carotene$) to 0.81(for protein). From cross-classification analyses, the proportion of subjects in the same intake quartile was highest for protein (65.4%) and lowest for vitamin A(47.1%). With regard to validity analysis, Spearman correlation coefficients ranged from 0.27(for vitamin A and fiber) to 0.90 (for energy). The proportions of subjects in the opposite categories between the first FFQ and the 8-day food record data were generally low within the range from 0.74% (for energy and carbohydrate) to 13.2% (for ${\beta}-carotene$). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the dish-based semiquantitative FFQ developed in this study can be useful for grouping Korean adolescents according to major macro- and micronutrient intakes with reasonable reproducibility and validity.

  • South Korea is under pressure to reduce $CO_2$ emissions because of expanding request for reducing $CO_2$ emissions. In many industry sectors, $CO_2$ emissions were analyzed to reduce $CO_2$ emissions. But little effort in researching agricultural sector has been undertaken because it is recognized as environmentally friendly industry. The object of this research is to estimate $CO_2$ emissions of crops and analysis on correlation between $CO_2$ emissions and production, acreage of crops. In this study, environmental input-output analysis was used to estimate $CO_2$ emissions of agricultural sector and spearman correlation coefficient was used to analysis on correlation between $CO_2$ emissions and statics like production and acreage. As a result, rice, barley, pulses and horticultural specialities had correlation with acreage and correlation coefficients of these crops were 0.800~0.933. Regression equations about $CO_2$ emissions and acreage of rice, barley, pulses and horticultural specialities was made and $R^2$ of these equations were 0.615~0.929. Using equations, $CO_2$ emissions of rice, barley, pulses and horticultural specialities can be estimated with acreage.
