Spatiotemporal changes of brain rhythmic activity at a certain frequency have been usually monitored in real time using scalp potential maps of multi-channel electroencephalography(EEG) or magnetic field maps of magnetoencephalography(MEG). In the present study, we investigate if it is possible to implement a real-time brain activity monitoring system which can monitor spatiotemporal changes of cortical rhythmic activity on a subject's cortical surface, neither on a sensor plane nor on a standard brain model, with a high temporal resolution. In the suggested system, a frequency domain inverse operator is preliminarily constructed, considering the individual subject's anatomical information, noise level, and sensor configurations. Spectral current power at each cortical vertex is then calculated for the Fourier transforms of successive sections of continuous data, when a single frequency or particular frequency band is given. An offline study which perfectly simulated the suggested system demonstrates that cortical rhythmic source changes can be monitored at the cortical level with a maximal delay time of about 200 ms, when 18 channel EEG data are analyzed under Pentium4 3.4GHz environment. Two sets of artifact-free, eye closed, resting EEG data acquired from a dementia patient and a normal male subject were used to show the feasibility of the suggested system. Factors influencing the computational delay are investigated and possible applications of the system are discussed as well.
Because of the rapid increase of energy consumption, we have some problems such as environmental pollution, global warming, the oil shocks, and so on. To solve these problems, concern about renewable energy such as solar energy, wind force, and water energy is continuously increasing. America, Europe, and Japan have developed a system that manage and utilize the information of the renewable energy resources. However, in the domestic, renewable energy information system was not effectively built yet. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a renewable energy information system, which store and manage solar radiation energy data. We implemented the system using ArcView GIS. Also the system is able to retrieve the information from the energy database through various spatiotemporal queries. In addition, user can identify the results of summary data in the form of chart, graph, and counter line. The implemented system is supplied to the user through the web by ArcIMS.
Although thermal effluent from coastal power plants affects marine ecosystems, few studies have examined the spatiotemporal distribution of macrobenthic communities in a coastal area of Korea with thermal discharge. This study analyzed the species composition and abundance of a macrobenthic community in relation to environmental variables for a period of 1 year. In total 334 macrobenthic faunal species were collected; the mean density was 3,221 ind/$m^2$. The number of species and the density of macrobenthic fauna increased with distance from the thermal discharge site. Cluster analysis indicated that the macrobenthic community could be divided into two groups: group I in shallow (< 30 m deep) and group II in the outer areas (> 30 m deep). Group I showed the lowest species density and diversity. Four polychaetes, including Magelona japonica, Spiophanes bombyx, Scolotoma longifolia and Chaetozone setosa, all of which have been dominant species since 1987, exhibited higher mean densities in the area distant from the thermal discharge (the outer and north areas). Conversely, the warm-adapted and opportunistic species, such as the amphipods Urothoe convexa and Mandibulophoxus mai, the bivalve Felaniella sowerbyi, and the polychaete Rhynchospio sp., were more abundant in the thermal discharge region. The results of this study indicate that thermal effluent influences macrobenthic communities in the shallow area, while other environmental variables, such as depth, sediment grain size, and TOC, are more important determinants of the macrobenthic communities in deeper regions (> 30 m deep).

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the virtual reality training (VRT) using 3-dimensional video gaming technology on spatiotemporal gait parameters in older adults. METHODS: The study participants were divided into two groups: the VRT group and the control group. Those in the VRT group were enrolled in a VRT, which was conducted for 60 min per day, two times a week, during the 6-week research. The Wii-Fit balance board game was used for the VRT intervention. The VRT consisted of 6 different types of games, namely, jogging, swordplay, ski jump, hula hoop, tennis, and step dance. A 3-dimensional TV was used for 3-dimensional display. Participants in both the groups received 3 sessions of fall prevention education, at the first, third, and fifth weeks. Their gait parameters were measured by using OptoGait. RESULTS: After 6 weeks of the VRT, the spatial gait parameters of the participants, that is stride length and step length, were significantly improved compared with those of the control group participants (p<0.05). The temporal gait parameters, such as velocity, cadence, stride time, and step time, also showed improvement after the completion of the VRT training (p<0.05). Both the temporal and spatial gait parameters of the VRT group participants showed improvement after 6 weeks of the program compared with those of the control group participants (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The VRT using 3-dimensional video gaming technology might be beneficial for improving gait parameters to prevent falls among older adults.

In this work, we study the problem of privacy-preservation data publishing in moving objects databases. In particular, the trajectory of a mobile user in a plane is no longer a polyline in a two-dimensional space, instead it is a two-dimensional surface of fixed width $2A_{min}$, where $A_{min}$ defines the semi-diameter of the minimum spatial circular extent that must replace the real location of the mobile user on the XY-plane, in the anonymized (kNN) request. The desired anonymity is not achieved and the entire system becomes vulnerable to attackers, since a malicious attacker can observe that during the time, many of the neighbors' ids change, except for a small number of users. Thus, we reinforce the privacy model by clustering the mobile users according to their motion patterns in (u, ${\theta}$) plane, where u and ${\theta}$ define the velocity measure and the motion direction (angle) respectively. In this case, the anonymized (kNN) request looks up neighbors, who belong to the same cluster with the mobile requester in (u, ${\theta}$) space: Thus, we know that the trajectory of the k-anonymous mobile user is within this surface, but we do not know exactly where. We transform the surface's boundary poly-lines to dual points and we focus on the information distortion introduced by this space translation. We develop a set of efficient spatiotemporal access methods and we experimentally measure the impact of information distortion by comparing the performance results of the same spatiotemporal range queries executed on the original database and on the anonymized one.
It is expected that synaptic construction and electrical characteristics In degenerate retina might be different from those In normal retina. Therefore, we analyzed the retinal waveform recorded with multielectrode array in normal and degenerate retina using principal component analysis (PCA) and Independent component analysis (ICA) and compared the results. PCA Is a well established method for retinal waveform while ICA has not tried for retinal waveform analysis. We programmed ICA toolbox for spatiotemporal analysis of retinal waveform. In normal mouse, the MEA spatial map shows a single hot spot perfectly matched with PCA-derived ON or OFF ganglion cell response. However In rd/rd mouse, the MEA spatial map shows numerous hot and cold spots whose underlying interactions and mechanisms need further Investigation for better understanding.
Information visualization, generally speaking, consists of three steps: transform from raw data to data model, visual mapping from data model to visual structure, and transform from visual structure to information model. In this paper, we propose a visual mapping method from spatiotemporal table information, which is related to events in large-scale building, to 3D map metaphor. The process has also three steps as follows. First, after analyzing the table attributes, we carefully define a context to fully represent the table-information. Second, we choose meaningful attribute sets from the context. Third, each meaningful attribute set is mapped to one well defined visual structure. Our method has several advantages. First, users can intuitively achieve non-spatial information through the 3D map which is a powerful spatial metaphor. Second, this system shows various visual mapping method applicable to other data models in the form of table, especially GIS. After describing the whole concept of our visual mapping, we will show the results of implementation for several requests.
In this study, we aim to describe kinematic characteristics of Korean /l/-flapping in two speech rates (fast vs. comfortable). Production data was collected from seven native speakers of Seoul Korean (four females and three males) using electromagnetic midsagittal articulometry (EMMA), which provided two dimensional data on the x-y plane. We examined kinematic properties of the vertical/horizontal tongue tip gesture, the vertical/horizontal (rear) tongue body gesture, and the jaw gesture in an /i/-/i/ context. Gestural landmarks of the vertical tongue tip gesture are directly measured. This serves as the actual anchoring time points to which relevant measures of other trajectories referred. The study focuses on velocity profiles, closing/opening spatiotemporal properties, constriction duration, and constriction minima were analyzed. The results are summarized as follows. First, gradiently distributed spatiotemporal values of the vertical tongue tip gesture were on a continuum. This shows more of a reduction in fast speech rate, but no single instance of categorical reduction (deletion). Second, Korean /l/-flapping predominantly exhibited a backward sliding tongue tip movement, in 83% of production, which is apparently distinguished from forward sliding movement in English. Lastly, there was an indication of vocalic reduction in fast rate, truncating spatial displacement of the jaw and the tongue body, although we did not observe positional variations with speech rate. The present study shows that Korean /l/-flapping is characterized by mixed articulatory properties with respect to flapping sounds of other languages such as English and Xiangxiang Chinese. Korean /l/ flapping demonstrates a language-universal property, such as the gradient nature of its flapping sounds that is compatible with other languages. On the other hand, Korean /l/-flapping also shows a language-particular property, particularly distinguished from English, in that a backward gliding movement occurs during the tongue tip closing movement. Although, there was no vocalic reduction in V2 observed in terms of jaw and tongue body height, spatial displacement of these articulators still suggests truncation in fast speech rate.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if auditory cues velocity has a greater effect on the gait pattern of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) than the cues applied individually. METHODS: The subjects were 15 elderly patients diagnosed with PD, 15 healthy elderly persons. Patients were measured of three conditions performed in random order: slow, general, fast. The auditory cue velocity consisted of a metronome beat ${\pm}20%$ than the subject's general gait speed. Using a motion analysis and a force platform measurement system, changes in spatiotemporal variables, kinetic and kinematic variables were compared to gait analysis. RESULTS: Comparison between the auditory cues velocity, there was a significant difference in the spatiotemporal variables with regard to the cadence, stride length, support time, step length, double support time (p<.05). Comparison between the auditory cues velocity, there was a significant increase general and fast velocity gait than slow velocity gait in the maximum flexion in swing phase of knee joint (p<.05). There appears to be the aspect of an increasing ground reaction force (GRF) on the first peak in the vertical axis (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Auditory cues velocity improved of spatio-temporal factors, kinematic and kinetic factors depending on the velocity of the faster. Therefore at the rehabilitation training of PD patients auditory cues velocity would be used for recovery and gait reeducation, may arise through the patients functional ability.
This study examined the correlations among the Berg Balance Scale, which is a clinical tool used to evaluate balance ability, spatiotemporal parameters of gait, and falling; determined the parameters most closely related to falling; and identified a discriminatory parameter and its predictability. Thirty-four subjects aged 72 to 92 years participated in this study. Following a questionnaire survey about falling, the Berg Balance Scale and spatiotemporal parameters of gait were measured. The results revealed that the incidence of falls increased with aging and an accompanying reduction in the flexion range of motion of the hip joint. The gait characteristics of elderly people who fell easily included a slower walking speed, shorter stride, and longer stance time than other elderly. When the cutoff score was set at 45, the Berg Balance Scale was able to identify correctly those individuals who truly have experience of falling than when the cutoff score was set at 39. But when the cutoff score was set at 39, the scale's specificity identifying correctly those individuals who truly have not experience of falling was higher than at the cutoff score of 45. Therefore, the Berg Balance Scale is an appropriate screening method in a clinical setting for the early detection of elderly people at risk of falling. In conclusion, elderly people with a Berg Balance Scale score. below 45 are the most likely to fall owing to their decreased balance ability.
