  • This study proposes a technique to dissipate the energy of a rocking wall installed on a frame by using a metallic damper. The rocking behavior is to turn left and right about the wall vertical axis. The development system is a method of dissipating energy by installing a damper which is the like on a large displacement portion. Experimental results showed that in case of shorter strut make strength capacity increasement and in case of longer strut make deformation capacity increasement. The higher the strut height, the better the energy dissipation capacity. The proposed equation for estimating the steel damper strength applied to this study is a straight type strut damper. However, it is not suitable for calculation of the strength of clamped type strut damper where both flexural behavior and shear behavior are mixed.

  • In this study, a rocking behavior experiment using a guide plate and a guide channel to prevent lateral deformation of a steel damper was planned. For this purpose, strut I-type specimen I-1 and strut S-type specimen S-1 were prepared. The experimental results were compared with the existing experimental results of SI-260 and SS-260 under the same conditions without the details of lateral deformation prevention in order to evaluate the effect of preventing lateral deformation. The damper with lateral deformation prevention detail was evaluated to have superior strength capacity, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity than the damper without it. Therefore, the lateral deformation prevention detail was evaluated to have a good effect in improving the design capability of the steel damper.

  • The human spatial mobility information is in high demand in various businesses; however, there are only few studies on human mobility because spatio-temporal data is insufficient and difficult to collect. Now with the spread of smartphones and the advent of social networking services, the spatio-temporal data began to occur on a large scale, and the data is available to the public. In this work, we compared the movement behavior of residents and tourists by using geo-tagged tweets which contain location information. We chose Seoul to be the target area for analysis. Various creative concepts and analytical methods are used: grid map concept, cells visited concept, reverse geocoding concept, average activity index, spatial mobility index, and determination of residents and visitors based on the number of days in residence. Conducting a series of analysis, we found significant differences of the movement behavior between local residents and tourists. We also discovered differences in visiting activity according to residential countries and used applications. We expect that findings of this research can provide useful information on tourist development and urban development.

  • In this study, the seismic performance and behavior characteristics of the upper truss structure of the large stadium are analyzed by nonlinear dynamic analysis. In the nonlinear dynamic analysis, the earthquake records were generated by site response analysis to simulate the nonlinear behavior of the relevant soil condition where the structure is located. Nonlinear dynamic analysis was performed using Perform-3D and the nonlinear properties of the substructure and the superstructure were determined in accordance with KISTEC guideline. According to the analysis results, excessive deformation occurred in the upper truss element, and plastic hinges exceeded the target performance in some members. Buckling-restrained brace is used for seismic retrofit of stadium structures and the analysis results shows the interstory drift satisfies the target performance level with dissipating the seismic energy efficiently.

  • This study investigates the mutual effects of the physical environment and the characteristics of user's need in the children's libraries of open plan type. The children's library as a flexible space should accept user's diverse needs. Especially, Children express more positive and diverse behaviors than adults in physical environment. As the design information obtained from observation of children's behaviors are put to architectural design, the more affluent environment in which children can do positive behaviors can be made. We used two research methods of the behavior observation and interview for the children's library, and could formulate various using actions through the behavior setting observation for using library. A relational description for reading environment in this study, based on the affordance and the behavior setting theories, provided us with rich accounts for the psychological and sociocultural resources in the children's library. Consequently, the following results can be summarized. First, children need territories for family use and for place and are using library effectively through taking the two territories. Second, the zoning according to age category should be done, as behavior patterns were observed differently according to age. Third, the space composition with openness should be designed, as children need social relation and learning through imitation and observation.

  • This paper presents a new approach for detecting abnormal behaviors in complex surveillance scenes where anomalies are subtle and difficult to distinguish due to the intricate correlations among multiple objects' behaviors. Specifically, a cascaded probabilistic topic model was put forward for learning the spatial context of local behavior and the temporal context of global behavior in two different stages. In the first stage of topic modeling, unlike the existing approaches using either optical flows or complete trajectories, spatio-temporal correlations between the trajectory fragments in video clips were modeled by the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic model based on Markov random fields to obtain the spatial context of local behavior in each video clip. The local behavior topic categories were then obtained by exploiting the spectral clustering algorithm. Based on the construction of a dictionary through the process of local behavior topic clustering, the second phase of the LDA topic model learns the correlations of global behaviors and temporal context. In particular, an abnormal behavior recognition method was developed based on the learned spatio-temporal context of behaviors. The specific identification method adopts a top-down strategy and consists of two stages: anomaly recognition of video clip and anomalous behavior recognition within each video clip. Evaluation was performed using the validity of spatio-temporal context learning for local behavior topics and abnormal behavior recognition. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed approach in abnormal behavior recognition improved effectively and significantly in complex surveillance scenes.

  • Laser Thomson scattering measurements of electrom temperature and density in a neutral loop discharge (NLD) plasma were performed in order to reveal the electron behavior around the neutral loop (NL). The experimental results were examined by using a simulation model that included effects of a three dimensional electromagnetic field with spatial decay of the RF electric field, and the limitation of the spatial extent of the electron motion and collision effect. From the experiments and modeling of the electron behavior, it was found that NLD plasma posses the electron temeprature $T_{e}$ and density ne peaks around the NL is essential for the formation of plasma. Also, the optimum condition of plasma production could be simply estimated by the calculation of $U_{av}$ and $F_{0}$././.

  • In architectural planning, previous cases of similar spatial program provide important data for architectural design. Case-based reasoning (CBR) paradigm in the field of architectural design is closely related to the designing behavior of a planner who makes use of similar architectural designs and spatial programs in the past. In CBR, spatial graph can be constituted with most fundamental data, which can provide a method of searching spatial program by using visual graphs. This study developed a system for CBR that can analyze the similarity through graph comparison and search for buildings. This is an integrated system that is able to compare space similarity of different buildings and analyze their types, in addition to the analysis on a space within a single structure.

  • This paper presents a numerical study of the spatial behavior of a linear absorbing solute in a heterogeneous porous medium. The spatially correlated log-normal hydraulic conductivity field is generated in a given two-dimensional domain by using the geostatistical method (Turning Bands algorithm). The velocity vector field is calculated by applying the two-dimensional saturated groundwater flow equation to the Galerkin finite element method. The simulation of solute transport is carried out by using the random walk particle tracking model with CD(constant displacement) scheme in which the time interval is automatically adjusted. In this study, the spatial behavior of a solute is analyzed by the longitudinal center-of-mass displacement, longitudinal spatial spread moment and longitudinal plume skewness.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a new efficient strategy that uses the Vector form Intrinsic Finite-element (VFIFE) method to conduct the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes. Nonlinear problems, such as large displacement, small strain, and contact and collision, can be analyzed using a unified calculation process in the VFIFE method according to the fundamental theories of point value description, path element, and reverse motion. This method enables analysis without the need to integrate the stiffness matrix of the structure, because only motion equations of particles established according to Newton's second law are required. These characteristics of the VFIFE facilitate the modeling and computation efficiencies in analyzing the nonlinear dynamic problem of flexible pipe with large deflections. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) dynamical model based on 3-D beam element was established according to the VFIFE method. The deep-sea flexible pipe was described by a set of spatial mass particles linked by 3-D beam element. The motion and configuration of the pipe are determined by these spatial particles. Based on this model, a simulation procedure to predict the 3-D dynamical behavior of flexible pipe was developed and verified. It was found that the spatial configuration and static internal force of the mining pipe can be obtained by calculating the stationary state of pipe motion. Using this simulation procedure, an analysis was conducted on the static and dynamic behaviors of the flexible mining pipe based on a 1000-m sea trial system. The results of the analysis proved that the VFIFE method can be efficiently applied to the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes.
