  • The time domain methods of estimating the attenuation coefficient are generally based on the analysis of statisical properties of the reflected echoes form an attenuating medium. Hence, it is often required to have a large number of data samples in order to obtain a statistically stable estimation result. In the attenuation estimation problem, this means that many different speckle patterns are required in the spatial resolution volume of an attenLlation image. In this paper, by using the fact that the speckle pattern Is sensitive to the point spread function of the ultrasound beam, we suggest a method to generate the statiscally uncorrelated or slightly correlated data samples in a given region by rotating a linear transducer and carrying out lateral scans for all rotating angles. This technique is applied to the entropy method for attenuation estimation proposed recently by the authors where the performance is verified by experiments using a tissue equivalent phantom.

  • This work propose a robust test for location parameters in multivariate data based on MVE and MCD with the affine equivariance and the high-breakdown properties. We consider the hypothesis testing satisfying high efficiency and high test power simultaneously to bring in the one-step reweighting procedure upon high-breakdown estimators, which generally suffer from the low efficiency and, as a result, usually used only in the exploratory analysis. Monte Carlo study shows that the suggested method retains nominal significance levels and higher testing power without regard to various population distributions than a Hotelling's $T^2$ test. In an example, a data set containing known outliers does not make an influence toward our proposal, while it renders a Hotelling's $T^2$ useless.

  • The present study describes an investigation on an epidemic of Tuberculosis (TB) which has been occurred among dairy cattle farms in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do since 2007. The investigation was performed in three ways as follows: 1. Collecting information about bovine TB outbreaks using investigation reports, an on-the-spot and tracing-back investigations; 2. Analyzing the outbreak pattern; 3. Establishing hypothesis and performing statistical analysis on potential risk factors. In the early 2000s, TB outbreaks were sporadically reported in beef cattle, and only a small number ($1{\sim}2$) of reactors was confirmed in each of outbreak farms. The number of TB outbreaks has been suddenly increased from 2007, mainly in dairy cattle farms. And these outbreaks were temporarily clustered during the period, from March 2007 to April 2009 (relative risk, RR = 13.7, p < 0.001). And two spatial clusters of which radiuses were 0.3 km (RR = 6.9, p < 0.001) and 0.9 km (RR = 3.6, p < 0.01). The analysis to find risk factors was performed on 99 dairy farms (21 outbreaks), which are located in the most seriously affected village during 2007-2009. Middleman (odds ratio, OR = 47.4, p < 0.05) and raw milk collecting system (OR = 6.9, p < 0.05) were recognized as with the highest association. Considering the fact that all the outbreak farms except one had their own manure composting tank, it might be that the manure containing pathogen was leaked from tank and transmitted to other farms by fomites such as middleman or raw milk collecting system.

  • Nowadays, a satellite image is widely utilized in identifying and predicting urban spatial growth. It provides essential informations on horizontal expansion of urbanized areas. However, its usefulness becomes very limited in analyzing density of urban development. On the contrary, zonal data, typically census data, provides various density information such as population, number of houses, floor information within a given zone. The problem of the zonal data in analyzing urban growth is that the size of the zone is too big. The minimum administration unit, Dong, is too big to match the satellite images. This study tries to derive synergy effects by matching the merits of the two information sources-- image data and zonal data. For this purpose, basic statistical unit (census block size) is utilized as a zonal unit. By comparing the image and zonal data of 1985 and 2000 of Daegu metropolitan area, this study concludes that urban growth pattern is better explained when the two types of data are properly used.

  • This study is to innovate policy service development by utilizing beneficiary - centered service design to public information and public data and services that citizens can experience. The Gov 3.0 Design Group operated by the Dongbuk Regional Bureau of Statistics in Daegu in 2015, proposed a 'start-up decision support service' for pre-founders, using data mining on the GIS spatial information held by the Statistical Office and real-time settlement information of credit card companies. For this, service design process and methodology were adopted and participation of various stakeholders. This study suggests that national design activity based on service design is effective in transforming public service based on government information disclosure. It is also worthwhile as an approach that can be considered when the government wants to release or open information or public data in useful form to the public.

  • In remote sensing image processing, the traditional fusion algorithm is based on the Intensity-Hue-Saturation (IHS) transformation. This method does not take into account the texture or spectrum information, spatial resolution and statistical information of the photos adequately, which leads to spectrum distortion of the image. Although traditional solutions in such application combine manifold methods, the fusion procedure is rather complicated and not suitable for practical operation. In this paper, an improved IHS transformation fusion algorithm based on the local variance weighting scheme is proposed for remote sensing images. In our proposal, firstly, the local variance of the SPOT (which comes from French "Systeme Probatoire d'Observation dela Tarre" and means "earth observing system") image is calculated by using different sliding windows. The optimal window size is then selected with the images being normalized with the optimal window local variance. Secondly, the power exponent is chosen as the mapping function, and the local variance is used to obtain the weight of the I component and match SPOT images. Then we obtain the I' component with the weight, the I component and the matched SPOT images. Finally, the final fusion image is obtained by the inverse Intensity-Hue-Saturation transformation of the I', H and S components. The proposed algorithm has been tested and compared with some other image fusion methods well known in the literature. Simulation result indicates that the proposed algorithm could obtain a superior fused image based on quantitative fusion evaluation indices.

  • This paper discusses the development of an up-to-date computerized CPT (Cone Penetration Test) based soil engineering classification system to provide geotechnical engineers with a handy tool for their daily design activities. Five CPT soil engineering classification systems are incorporated in this effort. They include the probabilistic region estimation and fuzzy classification methods, both developed by Zhang and Tumay, the Schmertmann, the Douglas and Olsen, and the Robertson et al. methods. In the probabilistic region estimation method, a conformal transformation is used to determine the soil classification index, U, from CPT cone tip resistance and friction ratio. A statistical correlation is established between U and the compositional soil type given by the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). The soil classification index, U, provides a soil profile over depth with the probability of belonging to different soil types, which more realistically and continuously reflects the in-situ soil characterization, which includes the spatial variation of soil types. The CPT fuzzy classification on the other hand emphasizes the certainty of soil behavior. The advantage of combining these two classification methods is realized through implementing them into visual basic software with three other CPT soil classification methods for friendly use by geotechnical engineers. Three sites in Louisiana were selected for this study. For each site, CPT tests and the corresponding soil boring results were correlated. The soil classification results obtained using the probabilistic region estimation and fuzzy classification methods are cross-correlated with conventional soil classification from borings logs and three other established CPT soil classification methods.

  • DVC (Distributed Video Coding) technique plays an essential role in providing low-complexity video encoder. But, in order to achieve the better rate-distortion performances, most DVC systems need feedback channel for parity bit control. This causes the DVC-based system to have high decoding latency and becomes as one of the most critical problems to overcome for a real implementation. In order to overcome this problem and to accelerate the commercialization of the DVC applications, this paper analyzes an effect of LDPCA frame size for adaptive LDPCA frame-based parity bit request estimations. First, this paper presents the LDPCA segmentation method in pixel-domain and explains the temporal-based bit request estimation method and the spatial-based bit request estimation method using the statistical characteristics between adjacent LDPCA frames. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the better performance and fast decoding is observed specially when the LDPCA frame size is 3168 in QCIF resolution.

  • In order to clarify the characteristics of PM10 in coastal and inland cities and their variation statistical analysis were carried out using environmental and meteorological data observed at Busan and Daegu metropolitans during 4 year from 2010. Averaged PM10 concentration was higher in industrial area than any other land-use sites, and its maximum value reach on over $50{\mu}g/m^3$ at Jangrim site in Busan. Temporal and spatial variations of PM10 concentration in Busan were more sharply, since topograph and mesoscale wind pattern in Busan is more complicated than those in Daegu. Correlation of PM10 concentrations between sites within Daegu appeared strongly and maximum values $R^2$ is about 0.8. This indicate that because wind pattern induced by mesoscale forcing in Daegu are well unified, the variation of PM10 concentration tends to be similar in all sites within Daegu. However, due to complicate wind pattern induced by topography and coastal line, PM10 correlation of sites within Busan was weaker in comparison with in Daegu. And correlation of PM10 at same lane-use in Busan and Daegu tend to be related to the intensity of meteorological forcing, which can decide the intensity of wind pattern.

  • Geosynchronous electron flux dropouts are most likely due to fast drift loss of the particles to the magnetopause (or equivalently, the "magnetopause shadowing effect"). A possible effect related to the drift loss is the radial diffusion of PSD due to gradient of PSD set by the drift loss effect at an outer L region. This possibly implies that the drift loss can affect the flux levels even inside the trapping boundary. We recently investigated the details of such diffusion process by solving the diffusion equation with a set of initial and boundary conditions set by the drift loss. Motivated by the simulation work, we have examined observationally the energy spectrum and pitch angle distribution near trapping boundary during the geosynchronous flux dropouts. For this work, we have first identified a list of geosynchronous flux dropout events for 2007-2010 from GOES satellite electron measurements and solar wind pressures observed by ACE satellite. We have then used the electron data from the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) spacecraft measurements to investigate the particle fluxes. The five THEMIS spacecraft sufficiently cover the inner magnetospheric regions near the equatorial plane and thus provide us with data of much higher spatial resolution. In this paper, we report the results of our investigations on the energy spectrum and pitch angle distribution near trapping boundary during the geosynchronous flux dropout events and discuss implications on the effects of the drift loss on the flux levels at inner L regions.
