We propose the query optimization technique using query classification in hybrid spatial DBMS. In our approach, user queries should to be classified into three types: memory query, disk query, and hybrid query. Specialty, In the hybrid query processing, the query predicate is divided by comparison between materialized view creating conditions and user query conditions. Then, the deductions of the classified queries' cost formula are used for the query optimization. The optimization is mainly done by the selection algorithm of the smallest cost data access path. Our approach improves the performance of hybrid spatial DBMS than traditional disk-based DBMS by $20%{\sim}50%$.
GR-tree and query aggregation techniques have been proposed for spatial query processing in conventional spatial query processing for wireless sensor networks. Although these spatial query processing techniques consider spatial query optimization, time query optimization is not taken into consideration. The index reorganization cost and communication cost for the parent sensor nodes increase the energy consumption that is required to ensure the most efficient operation in the wireless sensor node. This paper proposes itinerary-based R-tree (IR-tree) for more efficient spatial-temporal query processing in wireless sensor networks. This paper analyzes the performance of previous studies and IR-tree, which are the conventional spatial query processing techniques, with regard to the accuracy, energy consumption, and query processing time of the query results using the wireless sensor data with Uniform, Gauss, and Skew distributions. This paper proves the superiority of the proposed IR-tree-based space-time indexing.
W ith the recent advancement of IoT (Internet of Things) technology, there has been much interest in the spatial query processing which energy-efficiently acquires sensor readings from sensor nodes inside specified geographical area of interests. Therefore, various kinds of spatial query processing algorithms and distributed spatial indexing methods have been proposed. They can minimize energy consumption of sensor nodes by reducing wireless communication among them using in-network spatial filtering technology. However, they cannot optimize multiple spatial queries which w ill be w idely used in IoT, because most of them have focused on a single spatial query optimization. Therefore, we propose a new multiple spatial query optimization algorithm which can energy-efficiently process multiple spatial queries in a sensor network. The algorithm uses a concept of 'query merging' that performs the merged set after merging multiple spatial queries located at adjacent area. Here, our algorithm makes a decision on which is better between the merged and the separate execution of queries. For such the decision making, we additionally propose the cost estimation method on the spatial query execution. Finally, we analyze and clarify our algorithm's distinguished features using the spatial indexing methods of GR-tree, SPIX, CPS.
In order to approximate the spatial query result size we partition the input rectangles into subsets and estimate the query result size based on the partitioned spatial area. In this paper we examine query result size estimation in skewed data. We examine the existing spatial partitioning techniques such as equi-area and equi-count partitioning, which are analogous to the equi-width and equi-height histograms used in relational databases, and examine the other partitioning techniques based on spatial indexing. In this paper we propose a new spatial partitioning technique based on the Hilbert space filling curve. We present a detailed experimental evaluation comparing the proposed technique and the existing techniques using synthetic as well as real-life datasets. The experiments showed that the proposed partitioning technique based on the Hilbert space filling curve achieves better query result size estimation than the existing techniques for space query size, bucket numbers, skewed data, and spatial data size.
Efficient Query processing and optimization are critical for reducing network traffic and decreasing latency of query when accessing and manipulating sensor data of large-scale sensor networks. Currently it has been studied in sensor database projects. These works have mainly focused on in-network query processing for sensor networks and assumes homogeneous sensor networks, where each sensor network has same hardware and software configuration. In this paper, we present a framework for efficient query processing over heterogeneous sensor networks. Our proposed framework introduces query processing paradigm considering two heterogeneous characteristics of sensor networks: (1) data dissemination approach such as push, pull, and hybrid; (2) query processing capability of sensor networks if they may support in-network aggregation, spatial, periodic and conditional operators. Additionally, we propose multi-query optimization strategies supporting cross-translation between data acquisition query and data stream query to minimize total cost of multiple queries. It has been implemented in WSN middleware, COSMOS, developed by ETRI.
Content-based image retrieval system retrieves an image from a database using visual features. Among approaches to express visual aspects in queries, 'query by sketch' is most convenient and expressive. However, every 'query by sketch' system has the query imperfectness problem. GContent-based image retrieval system retrieves an image from a database using visual features. Among approaches to express visual aspects in queries, 'query by sketch' is most convenient and expressive. However, every 'query by sketch' system has the query imperfectness problem. Generally, the query image produced by a user is different from the intended target image. To overcome this problem, many image retrieval systems use the spatial relationships of the objects, instead of pixel coordinates of the objects. In this paper, a query-converting algorithm for an image retrieval system, which uses the spatial relationship of every two objects as an image feature, is proposed. The proposed algorithm converts the query image into a graph that has the minimum number of edges, by eliminating every transitive edge. Since each edge in the graph represents the spatial relationship of two objects, the elimination of unnecessary edges makes the retrieval process more efficient. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm leads the smaller number of comparison in searching process as compared with other algorithms that do not guarantee the minimum number of edges.

Selectivity estimation of queries not only provides useful information to the query processing optimization but also may give users with a preview of processing results. In this paper, we investigate the problem of selectivity estimation in the context of a spatial dataset. Although several techniques have been proposed in the literature to estimate spatial query result sizes, most of those techniques still have some drawback in the case that a large amount of memory is required to retain accurate selectivity. To eliminate the drawback of estimation techniques in previous works, we propose a new method called MW Histogram. Our method is based on two techniques: (a) MinSkew partitioning algorithm that processes skewed spatial datasets efficiently (b) Wavelet transformation which compression effect is proven. We evaluate our method via real datasets. With the experimental result, we prove that the MW Histogram has the ability of providing estimates with low relative error and retaining the similar estimates even if memory space is small.

The query optimizer's important task while a query is invoked is to estimate the fraction of records in the databases that satisfy the given query condition. The query result size estimation in spatial databases, like relational databases, proceeds to partition the whole input into a small number of subsets called “buckets” and then estimate the fraction of the input in the buckets. The accuracy of estimation is determined by the difference between the real data counts and approximations in the buckets, and is dependent on how to partition the buckets. Existing techniques for spatial databases are equi-area and equi-count techniques, which are respectively analogous in relation databases to equi-height histogram that divides the input value range into buckets of equal size and equi-depth histogram that is equal to the number of records within each bucket. In this paper we propose a new partitioning technique that determines buckets according to the maximal difference of area which is defined as the product of data ranges End frequencies of input. In this new technique we consider both data values and frequencies of input data simultaneously, and thus achieve substantial improvements in accuracy over existing approaches. We present a detailed experimental study of the accuracy of query result size estimation comparing the proposed technique and the existing techniques using synthetic as well as real-life datasets. Experiments confirm that our proposed techniques offer better accuracy in query result size estimation than the existing techniques for space query size, bucket number, data number and data size.

Topological relationships play an important role in query optimization in spatial databases. If topological relationships are known a priori, then expensive query processing can be avoided. In this paper we address the problems of: ⅰ) identifying topological relationships among spatial objects, ⅱ) checking consistency of specified topological relationships, and ⅲ) exhaustively deriving new topological relationships from the ones specified. These activities lead to an efficient query processing when queries associated with topological relationships are invoked. Specifically, eight types of topological relationships ({equal, disjoint, overlap, meets, contains, contained-in, properly-contains, and properly-contained-in}) are considered. We present an algorithm to check the consistency of specified topological relationships and to derive all possible relationships from the given set of known relationships.
