  • An unstructured implicit Euler solver is parallelized on a Cray T3E. Spatial discretization is accomplished by a cell-centered finite volume formulation using an unpwind flux differencing. Time is advanced by the Gauss-Seidel implicit scheme. Domain decomposition is accomplished by using the k-way N-partitioning method developed by Karypis. In order to analyze the parallel performance of the solver, flows over a 2-D NACA 0012 airfoil and a 3-D F-5 wing were investigated.

  • Atom probe tomography is a time-of-flight mass spectrometry-based microanalysis technique based on the field evaporation of surface atoms of a tip-shaped specimen under an extremely high surface electric field. It enables three-dimensional characterization for deeper understanding of chemical nature in conductive materials at nanometer/atomic level, because of its high depth and spatial resolutions and ppm-level sensitivity. Indeed, the technique has been widely used to investigate the elemental partitioning in the complex microstructures, the segregation of solute atoms to the boundaries, interfaces, and dislocations as well as following of the evolution of precipitation staring from the early stage of cluster formation to the final stage of the equilibrium precipitates. The current review article aims at giving a comment to first atom probe users regarding the limitation of the techniques, providing a brief perspective on how we correctly interprets atom probe data for targeted applications.

  • The software running on avionic system is required to be highly reliable and productive. The air transport industry has developed ARINC Specification 653(ARINC653) as a standardized software requirement of avionics computers. The document specifies the interface boundary between avionics application software and the core executive software. Dependability in ARINC 653 is provided by spatial and temporal partitioning whilst fault-tolerance is provided by health monitoring mechanism. Legacy real-time operating systems are used to support ARINC653 health monitor on integrated modular avionics(IMA). However, legacy real-time operating systems are costly and difficult to modify the kernel. In this paper, we suggest a Linux-based ARINC653 health monitor. Functionalities to support ARINC653 health monitor are implemented as a Linux kernel module and its performance is evaluated.

  • This paper presents an efficient reanalysis algorithm, named PRAS (Partial Reanalysis algorithm using Adaptable Substructuring), for the partially changed structures. The algorithm recalculates directly any displacement or member force under consideration in real time without a full reanalysis in spite of local changes in member stiffness or connectivity. The key procedures consists of 1) partitioning the whole structure into the changed part and the unchanged part, 2) condensing the internal degrees of freedom and forming the unchanged part substructure, 3) assembling and solving the new stiffness matrix from the unchanged part substructure and the changed members.

  • This paper focuses on lossy medical image compression methods for medical images that operate on two-dimensional(2D) integer wavelet transform. We offer an application of the Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees(SPIHT) algorithm to medical images, using a 2D wavelet decomposition and a 2D spatial dependence tree. The wavelet decomposition is accomplished with integer wavelet filters implemented with the lifting method, where careful scaling and truncations keep the integer precision small and the transform unitary. We have tested our encoder on medical images using different integer filters. Results show that our algorithm with certain filters performs as well and is sometimes better lossy coding using 2D integer wavelet transforms on medical images.

  • Land surface temperature ($T_s$) is a critical variable for understanding the surface energy exchange between land and atmosphere. Using the data measured from micrometeorological flux towers, three types of $T_s$, obtained using a thermal-infrared radiometer (IRT), a net radiometer, and an equation for sensible heat flux, were compared. The $T_s$ estimated using the net radiometer was highly correlated with the $T_s$ obtained from the IRT. Both values acceptably fit the $T_s$ from the Terra/MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)satellite. These results will enhance the measurement of land surface temperatures at various scales. Further, they are useful for understanding land surface energy partitioning to evaluate and develop land surface models and algorithms for satellite remote sensing products associated with surface thermal conditions.

타일 기반 전송은 HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding)의 MCTS(Motion Constrained Tile Sets) 기법을 이용하여 뷰포트에 해당하는 타일들을 고화질로 전달함으로써 이러한 요구사항을 해결한다.

  • This paper proposes a new multispectral image data compression algorithm that can efficiently reduce spatial and spectral redundancies by applying classified prediction, a Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT), and the three-dimensional set partitioning in hierarchical trees (3-D SPIHT) algorithm in the wavelet transform (WT) domain. The classification is performed in the WT domain to exploit the interband classified dependency, while the resulting class information is used for the interband prediction. The residual image data on the prediction errors between the original image data and the predicted image data is decorrelated by a KLT. Finally, the 3-D SPIHT algorithm is used to encode the transformed coefficients listed in a descending order spatially and spectrally as a result of the WT and KLT. Simulation results showed that the reconstructed images after using the proposed algorithm exhibited a better quality and higher compression ratio than those using conventional algorithms.

  • In this study, we investigated carabid beetles residing in the wetlands to understand their ecological adaptation and strategy selection associated with restricted resources and habitat limitation. The species richness, abundance, seasonal activity, and spatial distribution of the carabid beetles between the Mujechi Wetlands (wetland sites) and Mt. Jeongjok (mountain sites) have been compared. A total of 1,733 individual beetles from 30 species were collected and classified at the studied sites. The wetland sites were identified as having lower species richness and abundance for carabid beetles when compared with the adjacent mountain sites, whereas these beetles were observed to be dominant in the wetland sites than in the adjacent mountain sites. Calosoma inquisitor cyanescens, Carabus sternbergi sternbergi, and Carabus jankowskii jankowskii species were dominant in both the wetland and mountain sites. These species showed significantly different seasonal activity patterns in the wetland sites relative to the mountain sites. Although the three listed carabid species were observed to be widely distributed throughout the wetland sites, they still showed preference for drier sites, which clearly shows a distinction in their habitats. The results of the spatial-temporal distribution of carabid beetles in the wetland sites reflect their special strategies regarding space and time partitioning for maintaining their population. The distribution patterns of carabid beetles in the wetland sites also showed the desiccation gradient and environmental changes prevalent in wetlands. Ecological surveys, which use carabid beetles in the wetlands, can then be performed when restoring wetlands and for establishing management practices for improving the habitat quality.
