We introduce a process for optically reconstructing full-color holographic images recorded by optical scanning holography. A complex RGB-color hologram was recorded and converted into a binary hologram using a direct binary search (DBS) algorithm. The generated binary hologram was then optically reconstructed using a spatial light modulator. The discrepancies between the reconstructed object sizes and colors due to chromatic aberration were corrected by adjusting the reconstruction parameters in the DBS algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first optical reconstruction of a full-color hologram recorded by optical scanning holography.
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel photonic compressive sensing (CS) scheme for acquiring sparse radio frequency signals with adjustable compression ratio in this paper. The sparse signal to be measured and a pseudo-random binary sequence are modulated on consecutively connected chirped pulses. The modulated pulses are compressed into short pulses after propagating through a dispersive element. A programmable optical filter based on spatial light modulator is used to realize spectral segmentation and demultiplexing. After spectral segmentation, the compressed pulses are transformed into several sub-pulses and each of them corresponds to a measurement in CS. The major advantage of the proposed scheme lies in its adjustable compression ratio, which enables the system adaptive to the sparse signals with variable sparsity levels and bandwidths. Experimental demonstration and further simulation results are presented to verify the feasibility and potential of the approach.

Ladar (Laser Detection And Ranging, Lidar) is a sensor to acquire precise distances to the surfaces of target region using laser signals, which can be suitably applied to ATD (Automatic Target Detection) for guided missiles or aerial vehicles recently. It provides a range image in which each measured distance is expressed as the brightness of the corresponding pixel. Since the precise 3D models can be generated from the Ladar range image, more robust identification and recognition of the targets can be possible. If we simulate the data of Ladar sensor, we can efficiently use this simulator to design and develop Ladar sensors and systems and to develop the data processing algorithm. The purposes of this study are thus to simulate the signals of a Ladar sensor based on linear frequency modulation and to create range images from the simulated Ladar signals. We first simulated the laser signals of a Ladar using FM chirp modulator and then computed the distances from the sensor to a target using the FFT process of the simulated signals. Finally, we created the range image using the distances set.
Microfluidic chip technology is a research focus in biology, chemistry, and medicine, for example. However, microfluidic chips are rarely applied in imaging, especially in ghost imaging. Thus in this work we propose a ghost-imaging system, in which we deploy a novel microfluidic chip modulator (MCM) constructed of double-layer zigzag micro pipelines. While in traditional situations a spatial light modulator (SLM) and supporting computers are required, we can get rid of active modulation devices and computers with this proposed scheme. The corresponding simulation analysis verifies good feasibility of the scheme, which can ensure the quality of data transmission and achieve convenient, fast ghost imaging passively.
A new type of diffractive spatial optical modulators, named SOM, has been developed by Samsung Electro-Mechanics for projection display and other applications. A laser display in full HD format $(1920{\times}1080)$ was successfully demonstrated by using prototype projection engines having SOM devices, signal processing circuits, and projection optics.

We proposed more efficient encoding methods that can design a multi-channel multi-level phase only computer-generated hologram(CGH) that can reconstruct many objects simultaneously without a conjugate image. We used a fabrication technique for the pixel oriented CGH for designing the pattern of the proposed multi-channel CGH. We investigated the difference of the optical efficiency(η), mean square error(MSE) and signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of multi-channel CGHs that were designed by three kinds of encoding methods according to the number of quantization phase levels, and we estimated the performance of the pattern of the proposed multi-channel CGH. Generally, as the number of input objects' reference patterns stored in the CGH is increased, the reconstruction quality of the CGH is degraded. But we observed through computer simulation that the diffraction efficiency of the 1-ch CGH is 70%, and those of the 2-ch, 4-ch, 8-ch CGHs are 62%, 62% and 63%. Therefore we found that the diffraction efficiencies of the multi-channel CGHs using the newly proposed encoding method are similar to that of 1-ch CGH. We implemented the CGH optically using a liquid crystal spatial light phase modulator that consisted of a PAL-SLM efficiently coupled with a XGA type LCD by an optical lens and an LD for illuminating the LCD. We discussed the output images that are reconstructed from the PAL-SLM.

The projectors using liquid crystal display(LCD) have faults such as low optical efficiency, low brightness and even heat generation. To solve these problems reflective-type spatial light modulators based on MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) technology have emerged. Digital Micromirror DeviceTM(DMDTM), which was already developed by Texas Instruments Inc., and Thin-film Micromirror ArrayTM(TMATM), which has been recently developed by Daewoo Electronics Co., are the representative examples. The display using TMATM has particularly much higher optical efficiency than other projectors. But the micromirrors manufactured by semiconductor processes have inevitable distortion because of the limitations of the manufacturing processes, so that the distortions of their surfaces have great influence on the optical efficiency of the projector. This study investigated the effects of mirror flatness on the optical performance, including the optical efficiency, of the TMATM projector. That is to say, as a part of the efforts to enhance the performance of the TMATM projector, how much influence the form errors of a micromirror surface exert on the optical efficiency and the modulation of gray scale of the projector were analyzed through a pertinent modeling and simulations.
In this article, we review the study trends of three-dimensional (3D) displays that can display stereoscopic images from the perspective of a display device. 3D display technology can be divided into light field, holographic, and volume displays. Light field display is a display that can reproduce the intensity and direction of light or 'ray' in each pixel. It can display stereoscopic images with less information than a holographic display and does not require coherence of the light source. Therefore, it is expected that it will be commercialized before the holographic display. Meanwhile, the holographic display creates a stereoscopic image by completely reproducing the wavefront of an image using diffraction in terms of wave characteristics of light. This technology is considered to be able to obtain the most complete stereoscopic image, and the digital holographic display using a spatial light modulator (SLM) is expected to be the ultimate stereoscopic display. However, the digital holographic display still experiences the problem of a narrow viewing angle due to the finite pixel pitch of the SLM. Therefore, various attempts have been made at solving this problem. Volumetric display is a technology that directly creates a stereoscopic image by forming a spatial pixel, which is known as a volumetric pixel, in a physical space, and has a significant advantage in that it can easily solve the problem of the viewing angle. This technology has already been tested for commercial purposes by several leading companies. In this paper, we will examine recent research trends regarding these 3D displays and near-eye display that is emerging as a significant application field of these technologies.
Optical visual cryptography (OVC) based on binary computer generated holograms (BCGH) is proposed. OVC used optics instead of human eyesight for decryption of visual cryptography (VC). As a result, it was possible to adapt cryptography to an optical system. However, it also had some difficulties because it did not overcome the existing problems of VC completely. This paper suggests a method of optical cryptography implementation based on the phase modulation characteristics of a liquid crystal display (LCD). The problems are evaluated by simulation. This system shows that the noise is reduced and resolution is improved compared with the conventional OVC.

A computer-generated hologram (CGH) is a digitally calculated and recorded hologram in which the amplitude and phase information of an image is transmitted in free space. The CGH is in the form of a complex hologram, but it is converted into a phase-only hologram to display through a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM). In this paper, in the process of including the amplitude information of an object in the phase information, when a technique that includes subsampling such as DPAC is used, we showed experimentally that the bandwidth of the phase-only hologram increases, and as a result, aliasing that was not present in the complex hologram can occur. In addition, it was experimentally shown that it is possible to generate a high-quality phase-only hologram by restricting the spatial frequency range even at a distance where the numerical reconstruction performance is degraded by aliasing.
