This study investigates spalling properties of high performance concrete, 60MPa clan, made with the various types of coarse aggregate and adding ratio of polypropylene(PP) fiber. As experimental parameters, totally sixteen specimens of ${\phi}100{\times}200mm$ in size are prepared: one specimen for control without fiber, ten specimens with different coarse aggregate types, along with 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 percent of PP fiber in each. 1 hour fire test is conducted and then spalling appearance, spalling degree and residual compressive strength are examined. In addition, sit specimens made with two types of coarse aggregate site, along with same adding ratio of fiber are supplementally done, and only spalling properties is examined. Test results showed that control concrete and most specimens containing 0.05% of PP fiber exhibited 4 to 3 level of spalling degree, resulting severe explosive spalling, except for the specimen using basalt aggregate(Bc) showing 2 to 3 level of that. Especially, the Bc specimen containing 0.1% of the fiber exhibited that residual compressive strength value was 32%, which is 10% higher than other specimens using limestone or granite. Spalling resistance performance was also effective as aggregate size increase.

This study investigates spalling properties of 60MPa class, high performance concrete, made with the various influential parameters, such as, blaine of cement, mineral admixture and polypropylene(PP) fiber contents. Totally 21 parameters of ${\phi}100{\times}200mm$ in size was fabricated; three specimens for variance in blaine of cement, 4 specimens for combination of mineral admixture type, along with 0.05, 0.1, 0.15% of fiber adding ratio. After that, one hour unloading fire test was conducted, and then spalling appearance and spalling degree of specimens was examined. Test showed that a specimen made with high blaine of cement(H) improved early strength but exhibited similar value to a specimen made with low blaine(L) at the age of 28 days, thus indicating comparable spalling appearance. In conclusion, spalling easily occur in higher strength and smaller particle shape of cement and mineral admixture.

The spalling analysis of high strength concrete columns needs a very complex and difficult process accounting for peeling of cover concrete as well as thermal, thermo-stress and hygro-transfer phenomena. However, the study on the spalling analysis method is insufficient. The practical spalling analysis algorithm is developed in this study, which formulates a vapor pressure equation as the parameter of temperature and cover depth and uses the compatibility condition In results of the spalling analysis, as the concrete strength increases and the content of PP fiber decreases the degree of spalling increases. This shows a similar result as the previous experimental study. Therefore the developed algorithm suggested in this study is expected to be useful in predicting the spalling of high strength concrete columns.

Spalling is defined as damages to concrete exposed to high temperature during fire, causing cracks and localized bursting of small pieces of concrete. As the concrete strength increases, the degree of damage caused by spalling becomes more serious due to impaired permeability. It is reported that polypropylene(PP) fiber has an important role in protecting concrete from spalling, and the optimum dosage of PP fiber is 0.2%. However, this study was conducted on non-reinforced concrete specimens. The high-temperature behavior of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various concrete strength and various quantity of PP fibers is investigated in this study. The results revealed that the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increased as the concrete strength increased and as the quantity of PP fiber increased from 0% to 0.2%. However, the effect of PP fiber quantity on residual strength of column was barely above 0.2%.

In this study, the numerical fire analysis for temperature distribution and spalling behavior of underground concrete box structures that contained lifelines, such as power cables and communication cables. The temperature field of inner space was assumed based on the fire curve with the thermal gradient obtained from CFD analysis. It was assumed that the spalling behaviors of concrete are occurred when the concrete temperature reached the threshold, as dehydration degree. In this case, the elements correspond to spalling parts were removed and the analysis model were updated. Three fire scenarios were analyzed and the results were showed adequate spalling behavior. The bearing capacities of the box structures would be estimated in the companion paper.

Until now, the evaluation method of spalling depth using Martin et al. (1999)'s linear regression relations has long been known applicable. However, it is not likely that the proposed equation is applicable to the openings other than circular type and mostly overpredict the spalling depth in comparison with actual spalling cases. Moreover, the evaluation method to estimate the spalling width has not been presented yet; it is essential to evaluate the spalling width in addition to the spalling depth, because the shape of the spalled region influences the choice of suitable rock reinforcement. In this study, linear regression equations, in which normalized spalling depth ($d_f/W_D$) and normalized spalling width ($w_f/W_D$) are functions of three spalling evaluation indices, ${\sigma}_1/{\sigma}_c,\;D_{is}(={\sigma}_{max}/{\sigma}_c)$ and ${\sigma}_{dev}/{\sigma}_{cm}$, are established based on in-situ spalling observations and CWFS simulation results. Confidence intervals of 95% using the statistical inference theory are used in verifying the reliability of linear regression equations. Spalling depth ($d_f$) and spalling width ($w_f$) predicted from the proposed linear regression relations, which take three spalling evaluation indices into account, showed reasonable match with in-situ observations by adopting weighting factors considering the degree of variance of linear regression relations.

The study examined fire resistance of concrete followed by change of mixed rate in PP and NY composite fiber and the results were as follows. In the event of fluidity in concrete not set, plane satisfied 600±100, its target slump flow, and fluidity was reduced as organic fiber's mixed rate was increased. Air amount satisfied 3.0±1.0, its target air amount, and didn't have distinct differences in reduction and increase according to organic fiber's kind and change of its mixed rate. However, it had a tendency that fluidity was reduced as the mixed rate was increased. In characteristics of hardening concrete, the 28th day compressive strength followed by organic fiber's kind and change of its mixed rate didn't have a lot of differences and satisfied high strength scope as about 70MPa. In spalling characteristics after fire resistance test, spalling was happened in non-mixture, plane combination, and P1N0. In other combinations, spalling resistance was happened. The relic compressive strength rate was 56%, the best condition, in P3N1(PP0.03%, NY0.01% compositeness) mixing PP fiber with NY fiber at once.

It was presented that the spalling of high strength concrete exposed to high temperature could be reduced by using polypropylene fiber. However, as the concrete strength increase, the demanded quantity of PP fiber increase and this results in the loss of workability of ultra high strength concrete. The silica fume which is essentially mixed in ultra high strength concrete decrease the permeability of concrete, and this will increase the degree of spalling. In this study the effect of silica fume on the spalling of ultra high strength concrete and the fire resisting efficiency of PP fiber and poly vinyl alchol, instead of PP fiber, for the security of workability were experimentally examined.
High Strength Concrete has a disadvantage of the brittle failure under fire due to the spalling. It is reported that spalling is caused by the vapor pressure under fire and polypropylene (PP) fiber has an important role in protecting from spalling. The silica fume which is essentially mixed in high strength concrete decrease the permeability of concrete, and this will increase the degree of spalling. The fire resistance characteristics of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various contents of PP fiber and silica fume were investigated in this study. In results, the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increases as the content of PP fiber increases from 0% to 0.2% and the ratio decreases as the content of silica fume increases from 7% to 21%.
As the concrete strength increases the degree of damage caused by the spalling becomes more serious because of the permeability. It is reported that the polypropylene (PP) fiber has an important role in protecting concrete from spalling. However, the excessive usage of PP fiber would not useful in spalling control and would decrease the workability of ultra high strength concrete. The high-temperature behaviors of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various dosage of PP fibers and three types of fire endurance fibers were observed this study. In results, the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns, in case of concrete strength 60MPa, increases as the dosage of PP fiber increases from 0% to 0.2%, however, the effect of fiber dosage on residual strength of column barely changes above 0.2% and in case of concrete strength 120MPa, PVA fiber is the most suitable fire endurance fiber in accounting fire endurance performance and workability.
