The spacer grid is one of the main structural components in the fuel assembly, which supports the fuel rods, guides cooling water, and protects the system from an external impact load, such as earthquakes. Therefore, the mechanical and structural properties of the spacer grids must be extensively examined while designing them. In this paper, a numerical method for predicting the buckling strength of spacer grids is presented. Numerical analyses on the buckling behavior of the spacer grids are performed for a various array of sizes of the grids considering that the spacer grid is an assembled structure with thin-walled plates and imposing proper boundary conditions by nonlinear dynamic finite element method using ABAQUS/Explicit. Buckling tests on several numbers of specimens of the spacer grid were also carried out in order to compare the results between the test and the simulation result. The drop test is accomplished by dropping a carriage on the specimen at a pre-determined position. From this test, the specimens are buckled only at the uppermost and the lowermost layer among the multi-cells, which is similar to the local buckling at the weakest point of the grid structure. The simulated results also similarly predicted the local buckling phenomena and were found to give good correspondence with the experimental values for the thin-walled grid structures.
A spacer grid assembly, which is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps and is welded at the intersections to form an egg crate structure, is one of the main structural components of the nuclear fuel assembly for Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs). The weld quality of spacer grids in PWRs fuel is extremely important for the fuel assembly performance in the nuclear renter. The spacer grid welds are currently evaluated mainly by the metallographic examination although it reveals only cross-points which are welded by the laser beam. This experiment is also to compare the weldability of Zircaloy-4 spacer grids using by the GTA and LB. The effect of node geometries of spacer grids for the GTAW and LBW has been studied and optimum conditions of spacer grid welding have been found. Microstructures and micro-hardness of the GTA and LB welded zones have been also compared.

The spacer grids in nuclear fuel assembly locate and align the fuel rods with respect to each other. They provide axial and lateral restraint against an excessive rod motion mainly caused by coolant flow. It is understood that each rod Is supported by multiple spacer grid. In such a case, it is important to determine spacer grid span so as to avoid resonance between the natural frequency of the fuel rods and excitation frequency. Actually dynamic characteristics of the fuel rods can be improved by assigning adequate spacer grid locations. When a dynamic performance of the structure is to be improved, design sensitivity analysis plays an important role as like many structural redesign problems. In this work, a shape design concept, different from conventional design, was applied to the problem. According to the theory shape can be a design parameter and optimal shape design can be found. This study concentrates on eigenvalue design sensitivity of the fuel rod supported by multiple spacer grids to determine optimal spacer grids positions.

The paper presents modal testing and analysis in order to obtain the dynamic characteristics of a middle spacer grids of a nuclear fuel rod. A spacer grid is one of the important structural elements supporting nuclear fuel rods. Such a fuel rod can be oscillated by its thermal expansion, neutron irradiation and etc. due to cooling water flow under the operation of a nuclear power plant. When the fuel rod vibrates, fretting wear due to repeated friction motion between the fuel rods and spacer grids can be occurred, and so the fuel rod is damaged. In this paper, through modal analysis and testing, natural frequencies and modes of a middle spacer grid were calculated, and the following conclusions were obtained. Firstly the numerical first-seven natural frequencies for spacer grids of a fuel rod having complicated structures have a small difference within 3.8% with experimental natural frequencies, and so the suitability of simulation results was verified. Secondly, experimental mode shapes for a middle spacer grid of a nuclear fuel rod were verified by obtaining lower non-diagonal terms through MAC(Modal Assurance Criteria), and were confirmed by the simulation modes.
A spacer grid is one of the most important structural components in a LWR nuclear fuel assembly. The primary considerations are to provide a Zircaloy spacer grid with crush strength sufficient to resist design basis loads, without significantly increasing pressure drop across the reactor core. In this study, the dynamic crush strength analysis and test are carried out for the specimens of a spacer grid assembly.

Estimation for the vibration behavior of a nuclear fuel rod with its supporting structure called spacer grid has been made by the both of experimental and analytical methods in order to compare the supporting performance of two kinds of the spacer grids which have been newly developed. For the analytical method the fuel rod was modeled as a beam continuously supported by the springs of the spacer grid, and ABAQUS computer code was utilized. After a modal testing was performed for the fuel rod supported by five spacer grids, two results has been compared to justify and compensate the both methods. It has been found that the spring design of the spacer grid could give significant effect to natural frequency and vibration amplitude of the fuel rod.

The spacer grid is one of the main structural components in the fuel assembly, which supports the fuel rods and maintains coolable geometry from an external load. A vibration test and a finite element analysis using ABAQUS on a dummy fuel rod continuously supported by Optimized H type(OHT) and New Doublet (ND) spacer grids arc performed to obtain the vibration characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes an(1 to verify a finite element model. The results from the test and the finite element analysis are compared by modal assurance criteria (MAC) values. It is resulted that MACs for the first, the third and the fifth mode shapes are relatively good as compared with those of the second an(1 fourth ones. The natural frequency differences between two methods as well as the mode comparison results for the rod with OHT spacer grid are better than those with ND spacer grid. It is judged that the FE model for the ND spacer grid spring should be modified to consider the long contact length which actually happen when the spring supports the rod.
A CFD study was conducted to evaluate the nuclear fuel assembly coolant mixing that is promoted by the flow-mixing vanes on the grid spacer. Four mixing vanes (split vane, swirl vane, twisted vane, hybrid vane) were chosen in this study. A single subchannel of one grid span is modeled using the flow symmetry. The three mixing vanes other than swirl vane generate a large crossflow between the subchannels and a skewed elliptic swirling flow in the subchannel near the grid spacer. The swirl vane induces a circular swirling flow in the subchannel and a negligible crossflow. The split vane and the twisted vane were predicted to result in relatively larger pressure drop across the grid spacer. Since the average turbulent kinetic energy in the subchannel rapidly decreases to a fully developed level downstream of the spacer, turbulent mixing caused by the mixing vanes appears to be not as effective as swirling flow mixing in the subchannel. In summary, the CFD analysis represented the overall characteristics of coolant mixing well in a nuclear fuel assembly with the flow mixing vanes on the grid spacer. The CFD study is therefore quite useful for the development of an advanced flow-mixing vane.
Recent events in the nuclear industry have resulted in a movement towards increased seismic and LOCA excitations and requirements that challenge current fuel designs. AREVA NP's GAIA fuel design introduces unique and robust characteristics to resist the effects of seismic and LOCA excitations. For demanding seismic and LOCA scenarios, fuel assembly spacer grids can undergo plastic deformations. These plastic deformations must not prohibit the complete insertion of the control rod assemblies and the cooling of the fuel rods after the accident. The specific structure of the GAIA spacer grid produces a unique and stable compressive deformation mode which maintains the regular array of the fuel rods and guide tubes. The stability of the spacer grid allows it to absorb a significant amount of energy without a loss of load-carrying capacity. The GAIA-specific grid behavior is in contrast to the typical spacer grid, which is characterized by a buckling instability. The increased mechanical robustness of the GAIA spacer grid is advantageous in meeting the increased seismic and LOCA loadings and the associated safety requirements. The unique GAIA spacer grid behavior will be incorporated into AREVA NP's licensed methodologies to take full benefit of the increased mechanical robustness.
The local hydrulic characteristics in subchannels of 5$\times$5 nuclear fuel bundles with spacer grids were measured at upstream and downstream of the spacer grid for the investigation of the spacer grid effects on turbulent flow structure by using an LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimeter). The measured parameters are axial velocity and turbulent intensity, skewness factor, and flatness factor. Pressure drops were also measured to evaluate the loss coefficient for the spacer grid and the friction factor for rod bundles. From these data, it was found that the turbulent mixing and forced mixing occur up to $x/D^h=10$ and 20 from the spacer grid, respectively. The turbulence decay behind spacer grid behaves in the similar decay rate as turbulent flow through mesh grids or screens. Mixing factors useful in subchannel analysis code were correlated from the data and show the highest value near spacer grid and then have a stable values.
