  • The ontological status of Newtonian space-time has been debated under the name of substantivalism-relationism controversy. The debates between the two parties are concerned with the nature of existence of space-time. Substantivalism maintains that the points of space-time have existence analogous to material substance. Relationism claims that space-time should be understood as the framework of possible spatio-temporal relations between bodies. Newtonian space is considered as a three dimensional entity in accordance with our geometric common sense. Yet given that the concept of motion is defined as the change of position throughout time, it is possible to interpret space-time as a 4 dimensional entity. In this essay, substantivalist-relationist debate is considered within the context of non-relativistic 4 dimensional space-time theory. This essay attempts to clarify the dispute over the ontology of space-time by elucidating the relationship between the ontology of space-time, motion, and space-time symmetry.

  • This essay elucidates the way the geometries of space-time theories explain material bodies' motions. A conventional attempt to interpret the way that space-time geometry explains is to consider the geometrical structure of space-time as involving a causally efficient entity that directs material bodies to follow their trajectories corresponding to the laws of motion. Newtonian substantival space is interpreted as an entity that acts but is not acted on by the motions of material bodies. And Einstein's curved space-time is interpreted as an entity that causes the motions of bodies. This essay argues against this line of thought and provides an alternative understanding of the way space-time geometry explain the laws of motion. The workings of the way that Newton's flat and Einstein's curved space-time explains the law of motion is such that space-time geometry encodes the principle of inertia which specifies straight lines of moving bodies.

  • In spite of various attempts to characterize the ontological status of space-time, Newtonian substantivalism and Leibnizian relationism, what is really at issue in the controversy between the two parties is by no means clear. This essay argues that from the perspective of space-time symmetries, classical space-time can be unambiguously classified as substantival space-time and relational space-time. The symmetries of space-time theories distinguish the invariant geometric relationships between events. The essential difference between the two space-times stems from whether or not there exists the affine structure that distinguishes the inertial trajectories of a given body.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the meanings and expressional characteristics of space-time concept in modern architecture. As the architecture spaces reflect and represent the characteristics of times, the meaning and modern expression of space-time concept was studied in the developmental process of space concept on the base of the background of philosophy, science and psychology. At the late 19th century, space concept was changed with relative time-space in philosophy and science and the theory of visual perception. In the beginning of 20th century, space-time concept that combined space with time in the process of image open space expanded movement was developed. In modern architecture, it was expressed as the freedom of movement by open space expanded infinitely and/or abstract space without spacial measure, multiple view point by superimposed and/or polyhedric space and kinetic vision by dynamic and/or continuous space.

  • Space evolves from the concept of deterministic static location to a dynamic, connected area through the interference of the user. While this does incorporate physical changes of the space, it also reflects the changes of the program or characteristics of the space through the actions and changes of the user. Therefore, in this study we plan to review the characteristic of time appearing within space, thereby discussing the impact of changing of condition in time-space to the decision making of the user. Further, we plan to analyze the specific causes, and subsequently introduce a new perspective over space. In order to achieve this, we need to first understand the reason why the attribute of time needs to be discussed in space, and perform a fundamental analysis of factors for the changes of the users' actions following changes in space-time condition. This means that space is not limited to merely satisfying its innate objective as an area, but may have a basis for modifying its role to help the decision making of the users caused by changes in space-time conditions. Accordingly, we analyze the factors for change of environment that can appear in space following the flow of time caused by correlation in space-time, as well as psychological factors and variables for decision making by the users. Based on this, we analyze cases to study the influence of condition changes in time-space on the action decision judgment of the users. Through this, we propose that the actions of the users can be determined following changes in time-space conditions, and discuss the need for changes in our perspective of space.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of current fashion illustrations within the framework of Multi-space method. Multi-space means being piled up one moment & space on others, and being amassed in a scene. This method is related with Dadaism, Surrealism and Postmodernism, and also influences on the current fashion illustration. In this study, the types of Multi-space method could be classified into 4 types; Repetitive Time Mixture in Multi-space, Juxtaposed Time Mixture in Multi-space, Reiterated Space Mixture in Multi-space, Projected Space Mixture in Multi-space. The characteristics of Multi-space were analyzed and the results are as followed. The distinctive methods for Time Mixture in Multi-space are repetition and juxtaposition in a scene. Time Mixture in Multi-space can make the nonlinear narration and unreal illusory space in fashion illustrations more effectively. Reiterated Space Mixture in Multi-space can be related with the heterogeneous, surrealistic illusions in current fashion illustrations. Projected Space Mixture in Multi-space can be characterized into inter-penetration. It can derive spectators to mix the projected & transparent images in a scene for their own imaginary stories. The final imagination can be made differently according to the personal experiences of spectators.

  • The detector subsystem of the Optical Wide-field Patrol (OWL) network efficiently acquires the position and time information of moving objects such as artificial satellites through its chopper system, which consists of 4 blades in front of the CCD camera. Using this system, it is possible to get more position data with the same exposure time by changing the streaks of the moving objects into many pieces with the fast rotating blades during sidereal tracking. At the same time, the time data from the rotating chopper can be acquired by the time tagger connected to the photo diode. To analyze the orbits of the targets detected in the image data of such a system, a sequential procedure of determining the positions of separated streak lines was developed that involved calculating the World Coordinate System (WCS) solution to transform the positions into equatorial coordinate systems, and finally combining the time log records from the time tagger with the transformed position data. We introduce this procedure and the preliminary results of the application of this procedure to the test observation images.

  • This study looks at spatiotemporal theories regarding the pluralism of time inherent in garden space, and attempts to establish spatiotemporal theories suitable for garden spaces. Based on the established theories, this study analyzes the intimacy of garden spaces by focusing on the objective and subjective time of garden spaces in Derek Jarman's garden through a literature review. The sense of time inherent to a garden space was divided into objective and subjective time. The former refers to ecological time that is quantified and has durability, while the latter indicates time that changes according to the consciousness of the human subject. It also includes time that is emotionalized by the sense of the human subject. This study first interpreted Jarman's garden space from the perspective of objective time. The garden transforms itself into a sensitive space according to Jarman's personal emotions in the current space within objective time, showing the multilayered attributes of space. Therefore, a garden space that exists in objective time is ultimately not objective, and is transformed according to the active reception of the human subject. Next, this study examined Jarman's garden space from the perspective of subjective time. The garden space lost in Jarman's memories and the one in his future illusion turn into a space that connotes abundant meaning according to Jarman's imagination or perception. Therefore, in subjective time, garden space is transformed according to Jarman's consciousness. This study verified that garden space, regardless of whether time is objective or subjective, can create infinite space according to the consciousness or emotions of the human subject beyond the existence of physical space. Since garden space has a unique intimacy unlike urban space, this study presented the uniqueness of garden space with an approach that differs from previous studies on gardens.

  • This study is intended to set the concept of becoming meaning of digital space through digital technology and to study the influence of digital space on becoming of real space through derived keyword. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the digital concept is created in the process that the virtual space is changed into the real space with a priority given to form, space and time. Digital expression concept and image concept the structural becoming, and idea concept and creative concept creates the time becoming. Second, the concept of digital becoming exposes a physical visibility through the digital's virtual image, and non-space spatiality through the space simulation. It also continuously reveals a consecutive time and non-consecutive time through a statable progress, incremental progress, and dynamic progress. Third, as the influence of digital on becoming of real space, the digital visibly not only expresses the new and difficult becoming problem through conceptual virtuality, but also can review the real space's space concept with virtuality in the digital non-area. Digital's durability expresses the new space's existence by physically combining with the existing space through the virtual form creation.
