  • Due to the continuous space development by mankind, the number of space objects including space debris in orbits around the Earth has increased, and accordingly, difficulties of space development and activities are expected in the near future. In this study, among the stages for space debris removal, the implementation of a vision-based approach technique for approaching space debris from a far-range rendezvous state to a proximity state, and the ground test performance results were described. For the vision-based object tracking, the CAM-shift algorithm with high speed and strong performance, and the Kalman filter were combined and utilized. For measuring the distance to a tracking object, a stereo camera was used. For the construction of a low-cost space environment simulation test bed, a sun simulator was used, and in the case of the platform for approaching, a two-dimensional mobile robot was used. The tracking status was examined while changing the position of the sun simulator, and the results indicated that the CAM-shift showed a tracking rate of about 87% and the relative distance could be measured down to 0.9 m. In addition, considerations for future space environment simulation tests were proposed.

  • Apophis is a near-Earth object with a diameter of approximately 340 m, which will come closer to the Earth than a geostationary orbit in 2029, offering a unique opportunity for characterizing the object during the upcoming encounter. Therefore, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute has a plan to propose a space mission to explore the Apophis asteroid using scientific instruments such as a laser altimeter. In this study, we evaluate the performance metrics of a laser altimeter using a pseudorandom noise modulation technique for the Apophis mission, in terms of detection probability and ranging accuracy. The closed-form expression of detection probability is provided using the cross correlation between the received pulse trains and pseudo-random binary sequence. And the new ranging accuracy model using Gaussian error propagation is also derived by considering the sampling rate. The operation range is significantly limited by thermal noise rather than background noise, owing to not only the low power laser but also the avalanche photodiode in the analog mode operation. However, it is demonstrated from the numerical simulation that the laser altimeter can achieve the ranging performance required for a proximity operation mode, which employs commercially available components onboard CubeSat-scale satellites for optical communications.

  • By using the recently determined color excess and distance data of classical by Kim (1985), the distribution of interstellar reddening material was studied to see the general picture of the average rate of interstellar absorption out to about 7-8 kpc in the Galactic plane in various directions from the sun.

  • We present the results of an rocket-borne observation of far-infrared [CII] line at 157.7 ${\mu}m$ from the diffuse inter-stellar medium in the Ursa Major. We also introduce a part of results on the [CII] emission recently obtained by the IRTS, a liquid-helium cooled 15cm telescope onboard the Space Flyer Unit. From the rocket-borne observation we obtained the cooling rate of the diffuse HI gas due to the [CII] line emission, which is $1.3{\pm}0.2 {\times} 10^{-26}$ $ergss^{-1} H^{-1}_{atom}$. We also observed appreciable [CII] emission from the molecular clouds, with average CII/CO intensity ratio of 420. The IRTS observation provided the [CII] line emission distribution over large area of the sky along great circles crossing the Galactic plane at I = $50^{\circ}$ and I = $230^{\circ}$. We found two components in their intensity distributions, one concentrates on the Galactic plane and the another extends over at least $20^{\circ}$ in Galactic latitude. We ascribe one component to the emission from the Galactic disk, and the another one to the emission from the local interstellar gas. The [CII] cooling rate of the latter component is $5.6 {\pm} 2.2 {\times}10$.

  • In this paper the current statuses of world governments' funding for space program and space market were presented. Since 2001, governments' expenditures for space program have experienced strong growth, and are at a historical high, estimated $62.1 billion in 2008, as compared to $30-35 billion in 1990s. Following a peak growth of 9% in 2008, government budgets for space program are expected to continue their growing trend but at a slower pace during next five years, with 4.5%. Also world space market revenue reached a historical high $123 billion in 2007 with 11.5% annual growth rate during 2002-2007. In this paper the Korean government's budget and Korean space market revenue were presented too, and compared to those worldwide.

  • The theoretical analysis and experiment with simulator were performed to obtain the temperature distributions in radiant heating panel and heat supply from hot water to heating space for the purpose of the development of comfortable living space from a point of view of the improvement of air quality and the enhancement of system efficiency. The relations of various parameters, such as pipe pitch, room temperature as well as flow rate and temperature of hot water and so on, with the rate of heat supplied, mean temperature and maximum temperature difference at panel surface were discussed. The effects of these parameters were also verified on the thermal performance of heating panel using the relations which could be used for the optimal design and operation of the radiant heating panel.

  • Jacket matrices which are defined to be $n{\times}n$ matrices $A=(a_{jk})$ over a field F with the property $AA^+=nI_n$ where $A^+$ is the transpose matrix of elements inverse of A,i.e., $A^+=(a_{kj}^-)$, was introduced by Lee in 1984 and are used for signal processing and coding theory, which generalized the Hadamard matrices and Center Weighted Hadamard matrices. In this paper, some properties and constructions of Jacket matrices are extensively investigated and small orders of Jacket matrices are characterized, also present the full rate and the 1/2 code rate complex orthogonal space time code with full diversity.
