The purpose of this study is to know how to make common space, find a type of it, and build a village landscape with it in countryside. There are five types of village including suburban according to typological locality in rural area. Each of them have remarkable common spaces that are combined with community identity and usage. They usually are located along with the street and lane of the village. Most of the villages I surveyed have common places for residents to rest, share, and meet together. Representatively, pavilion with symbolic tree we call Jeonja is very popular place to them, and village people also require public parking or pocket park in their modern life. I researched common places in ten communities in rural area so that I can suggest a way of community design through them. According to this research, there are three results. First, the common space of the village is placed to motivate emotional and attractive community design in the village. Second, the common space has an identity and landscape architectural relationship to build sustainable community. Third, countries' streets that I surveyed have four types, which are liner, tree, loop, and radiate patterns of lane. In line with those types, each one makes different and historical community landscape.
Because the 'image' is the 'reality' in this era, there are the characteristics dematerialized between reality and non-reality in the contemporary architecture. These are promoting individualization, differentiation and multi-layered time with the development of electronic technology. This trend emphasizes the importance of imagines that are not only homogenized, simultaneous but also overlapped, multi-layered, discriminatory. Perspectives and essential characteristics of the architectural skin are changing in terms of the technical and social awareness and that means the skin has features as a complex body. Recently as an imagine creator, the architectural skin make form of media boundaries reflecting the various relationships between the observer and the external environment and also, the interior space become another sensory skin by removing the boundaries of the internal and external. It is important that making an identity of the architecture defined by the media or the imagine as well as the importance of space in architecture. These changes of skin make the third space based on the viewer's imagination and show the potential of new architectural skin with the expansion space by blurring the boundary between reality and illusion. It occurs to the diversity of the architectural skin with the identity. It will more diversified and be recognized immediately and sensibly through the interface attributes in contact with the city directly. In addition, it is more important that the skin become a unified body related with urban, social and cultural context.
The Contemporary Korean fiction today to a certain context infringes on the outskirts of mainstream literary theories diversified to an extent that anything and everything that are printed are defined as literature. The two fictions that the study is based upon, probably, shows the effects of postmodernism in Korean fictional 'space' in that the representation of the said fictions veers clear from that with which one might associate in contemplating the traditional Korean fiction. The study, though it seems, based on a more of a societal perspective rather than traditional literary perspective is to be noted in reference with the postmodern theories that we identity with today. The paper takes look at the changes that can be noted in the fictions: Kyung ma jang ga nun gil by Ha Il-ji and Oak tap hang by Park Sang-woo. The main objective of the paper is that it tried to identify the cultural identity of Koreans through the descriptions found in the two works. While concluding as to why these two fictions can be categorized as belonging to the genre of postmodernism the research also tries to formulate what and how postrnodernism can be discerned in fictional genre and this especially in today's Contemporary Korean fiction.
This study investigates and analyzes Catholic cultural traits in Gaudi's architectural designs on the assumption that the cultural identity of Spain has been built heavily on Catholic cultural tradition. Through examining thoroughly six residential buildings Gaudi designed, Catholic cultural traits were found in their interior ornaments, space formation, and expression of form. This study shows, first, that by making good use of interior ornaments, Gaudi sought to Catholic cultural uniformity among buildings that have different cultural characteristics. Second, with regard to space formation, he tended to build a chapel or an oratory inside structures which encouraged residents to worship in their home. Also, as for expression of form, his designs, expressing Catholic cultural features in various ways, succeeded to form visual uniformity among buildings and structures with a variety of styles. Lastly, by using properly Catholic cultural elements explained above and making those traits easily recognized even from a long distance, his architectural works represent very well the importance of Catholic culture as a foundation of Spain culture.
This study looked at the factors that shaped the identity of the Bupo-dong community through Dong-gye and Sangyeo-gye, mainly in the case of Bupori, Yeah, and Adong, and to identify that Dong-gye and Sangyeo-gye, played an important role in shaping and strengthening the community culture of its members. As a result of his inspection, Bupo-dong formed and maintained his belonging and identity as a member of Bupo-dong through the Dong-gye, the town's autonomy code. We were able to confirm that bupo-dong, unlike other villages where community culture is largely destroyed, has been able to continue its own community culture as a bupo people to this day, with a sense of belonging, solidarity and intimacy through the Sangyeo-gye of cooperation and relief. And it can be seen that the fact that the Burawon space, which has symbolic meaning to the people of Bupo-dong, exists without being watered down. It is important to discuss the community culture of Bupo-dong, which is sustainable, mainly in Bura-dong, which continues to be an important cultural space for bupo-dong people to meet and town events.

The aim of this study is to identify the spatial foundation units required to execute a rural village landscape plan. Though there have been various previous studies on spatial foundation units for rural space and landscape elements, they are limited in clarifying the landscape identity of a rural village unit in creating a feasible a rural village landscape plan. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the natural spatial features of a rural village and then establish a landscape identity for each space by exploring the landscape elements for each rural village unit set as the basic unit. Accordingly, the basic spatial unit was analyzed through a 1:5000 scale mapping by applying geomancy theory to the spatial landscape unit in a naturally generated rural village. The spatial limitations for a rural village landscape were set based on the analysis. Afterwards, a field study on the feasibility of whether or not setting a space as the basic unit for landscape could have a sense of identity as a single landscape unit for verification was processed, and the spatial limitations for the landscape were adjusted. Moreover, landscape elements were investigated by classifying landscape resources based on rural amenity resources which have been diversely researched in terms of the set spatial boundaries, and the sense of identity for each landscape foundation unit was looked into. While the numerous preceding studies focused on exploring the rural landscape value and findingout the sense of identity on landscape elements, it is high time for feasible and applicable studies in conducting region-specific landscape plans. In particular, similar outcomes from all landscape plans, even those with the same purpose established in various regions, is not a desirable outcome. Therefore, a basic framework is needed to discover the landscape identity generated by each plan in a rural area space. In this sense, this study is significant in that itcan be utilized to establish spatial identity of each region and landscape features of each rural village, and come up with realistic alternatives in landscape plans for each region by exploring the landscape identity in each specific space divided per watershed in a single zone.
What is the meaning of home to older people? How much is home significant for older people? How do they express self-identity through decorating their own homes? These are the new subjects that scholars in the West are involved in lately in terms of micro-perspective (George, 1998; Kellett, Gilroy & Jason, 2005; Gilroy & Kellett, 2006). It is evident that home has more significant meaning to older people than other age groups, since the older are more likely to spend greater time within the home through lower income, lessening mobility or loss of companions (Gilroy, 2005). Also the older tend to cling to their homes and attach to possessions than the younger. Older people's possessions are the things that memories of their lives were absorbed. Therefore, possession display can role as a mean of showing their past lives and memories. Gilroy and her colleagues (2005, 2006) found that there was a certain pattern of possession display in English older people's households, and that older people would like to express self-identity through decorating their own homes with their precious possessions. Then, isn't it interesting to find out if there is any pattern of possession display or decoration items in Korean older people's households as well? Thus, the aim of this study is to describe pattern of possession display as a mean of expressing self-identity in Korean older people's households. Interview with older people was used to find out the way and reason of display possessions. Observation method including taking photos and hand-drawings was also added in order to demonstrate detail condition of display items in the house. Possessions display and furniture arrangement in the living room and bedroom were investigated to find out a certain pattern of display and meaning. Research objects were healthy older people aged over 60, who are living independently from their adult children, and who can manage housekeeping by themselves. 32 households were investigated in the area of Seoul, Kyunggi, Chungchungnam, and Kangwon provinces. The findings demonstrate that most precious possession for Korean older people is photo of themselves; especially one taken in their younger age. The reason of it is because the photo reminds them of their heydays when they were vital. Photo of the most beloved one is displayed more frequently in the bedroom than in the living room indicating consistence with English case. As symmetrical display pattern was dominant in case of English older people's households, no dominant display pattern is found in Korean case. Korean older people also cling to their homes and possessions and want to keep their dwelling space as large as what they use now. It is notable that even after they become older and frail, they want sufficient space to display possessions as a mean of self-identity expression. Attachment to possessions and decoration can give older people significant meaning of identity, and it is the reason why architects or interior designers have to meet older people's needs. It needs consideration that residents are allowed to bring their old furniture and precious possessions when they move in elderly housing unit in order to minimize environmental shock, as well as feeling at home. This subject could suggest a clue to designers or architects who have to meet residents' needs in space design of elderly housing or facilities in the future. Psychological well-being of older people can be met by making them feel at home wherever they live. They need space where they can express their own identity and personality even in case when they have to live in a limited small space like elderly housing unit or nursing home.
This study is an historical consideration about the modern discourse of Japanese spacial tradition driven from cultural background. The purpose of this study is to establish a cartographic map of historical progress, and to shed light on the forming of identity in Japanese traditional space design on the schizo-analytical aspect. It adopts F. Guattari's psychoanalytic theory to the structural analysis of Japanese traditional space design. The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, it mentions Guattari's theory of Mechanical Unconscious, Schizo-analysis, Cartography, and Abstract machine as theoretical background. And, it considers the identity of Japanese traditional space constructed by various cultural sign over a long period of time as the statement of apriority. Secondly, it clarifies semiologic generation of Japanese traditional space design based on the analysis of spacial morphemes about each design stemmed from modernization process of Japan. Thirdly, it ascertains semiologic topography the representamens draw, i.e. schizo-analytic cartography from synchronic and diachronic point of view. Fourthly, it analyses traditional discourse structure in terms of generative schizo-analysis and transformational schizo-analysis with four categories- object, style, concept, strategy. Through this process, it studies the reproduction of Japanese tradition in terms of the 'social organization', and explores the way vitalized on the space-time coordinate system by the schizo-analysis of the mechanical unconscious. In conclusion, it clarifies Generative-schizo is accomplished in the level of formulating representamen, and Transformational-Schizo involves experimental mind that induce implantation of the heteromorphic elements and avant-garde experiments of abstract mechanical operation in the schizo-analysis of Japanese traditional space design. The significance of this study is to arrange an opportunity of introspection on Korean-ness seriously from inspecting logic of Japan-ness closely in traditional space design.
This study examines placeness of the living space on the basis of Schulz's existential space and inquires into the expressional features of placeness by analyzing cases. Results of this study have shown that placeness of living space is formed by three factors as follows. First, the living space with placesness maintains inner order which structuralizes surroundings. Second, it expresses its identity through innate shape that reflects surroundings. Third, inner space has innate identity and it is much related to characteristics personality of a resident, environmental and psychological factors. It is as follows that concrete features of existential placeness shown in analyzing cases of Botta and Moore's works. There are concrete expressional features of placeness in the housing of Botta, and one is to keep order of inner space the horizontal and vertical axis reflected surroundings. Another is to show existence feeling as the shape of a stable singular mass with surroundings and regional properties. The third is to value innate features of each space inside housing and particularly to acquire placeness as combining phenomenological characteristic of light. There are concrete expressional features of placeness in the housing of Moore, and first, strong centrality formed in the inside is emphasized as extending to outside environment. Second, existence feeling is acquired as familiar form using the shape and material considered surroundings. Third, the personality of a resident is positively reflected in the design. Besides, placeness is acquired by goods and furniture as positively considering environmental and psychological sides.

Regarding to Dandong as the gateway city of the Sino-North Korea trade, cultural anthropology characterizes it with a hybridity of four groups with a different combination of ethnic and national identity: Korean Chinese(Chosonjok), South Koreans, North Koreans and Chinese-North Koreans. And, microeconomics views the enterprises in Dandong area have different sizes and types in the Sino-North Korea cross-border trade depending on their owner's ethnic and national identity. However, these researches focuses mainly on the differences between the groups, falling short in showing how the group members utilize their double identities to maintain and prosper their businesses, coping with various and changing situations. This study introduces the concept of 'identity juggling' and applies it to Chosonjok cross-border traders. The results from the in-depth interview and survey indicate they juggles their Korean ethnic identity and Chinese national identity selectively in terms of their bilinguality of the Korean and Chinese, mobility crossing China, South Korea, and North Korea, and prospects on the trade revitalization thanks to potential mitigation of tensions in Korea peninsula.
