  • Objectives: The effectiveness of acupuncture on cancer pain is relatively well established, while there have been few clinical studies on pharmacopuncture on that. This research was aimed to investigate a trend of pharmacopuncture treatment for cancer pain and to propose information for further research. Methods: Clinical studies on pharmacopuncture for cancer pain were collected from 5 Korean medical databases. And the studies were analyzed by classifications of cancer, chief complaints, interventions, treating skills, additional treatments, treatment session, outcome measures, results and adverse effects. Results: The literatures were 8 case reports and 1 randomized controlled trial. Interventions were pharmacopunctures of soyeom, mountain ginseng, Harpagophyti Radix, snake venom, Trionycis Carapax, bee venom, Aconitum Ciliare Decaisne. Treatment skills, procedures, and indications of each pharmacopuncture were different. • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to comprehensively review Korean domestic studies and investigate the research trends of pharmacopuncture therapy on cervical pain caused by traffic accidents. Methods: Domestic studies between February 1999 and May 2020 from four Korean databases were searched with combinations of keywords 'cervical pain', 'traffic accident', 'whiplash injury', and 'pharmacopuncture'. Results: 17 studies were selected for review, including 7 randomized controlled trials, 5 retrospective observational studies, 3 case reports, and 2 non-randomized controlled trials. Each study was reviewed by published year, study type, types of pharmacopuncture solutions, selected acupuncture points, dosage of pharmacopuncture solutions, frequency of treatment, concurrent treatments, outcome measurements, and the effectiveness of pharmacopuncture therapy. The results are as follows: (1) It showed that the total number of published studies had increased slightly in the last 10 years compared to the previous decade. (2) The pharmacopuncture solutions used in the studies were in the following order: Bee-Venom (蜂毒), Jungsongouhyul (中性瘀血), Hwangryunhaedoktang (黃連解毒湯) and Soyeom (消炎). Frequently used acupuncture points were GB20, GV21, A-shi point, GV16, EX-B2, and SI15 in order. (3) The most commonly used total injection dosage was 1.0 cc at a time, and the frequency of treatment was twice a week. (4) Concurrent treatments such as acupuncture, herbal medication, physical therapy and Chuna manual therapy were performed in all 17 studies. (5) Pharmacopuncture therapy showed positive effects on cervical pain caused by traffic accidents in all 17 studies reviewed. Conclusion: Pharmacopuncture therapy was effective in cervical pain caused by traffic accidents in all 17 studies selected. Further studies will be needed using more larger scales and more objective data to confirm the effectiveness of pharmacopuncture therapy and to generalize its application.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report a case of lipoma removed by surgical method. Methods : A 69-year-old female was diagnosed with lipoma on the left upper shoulder. Bufonis venenum pharmacopuncture was used for local anesthesia. The 11th blade and the CO2 laser was used for incision. After removal of lipoma, irrigation with soyeom pharmacopuncture solution and simple interrupted suture were carried out. For 7 days, Yeonkyopaedok-san was given and the suture was removed after 14 days. At last, saengkigo was applied. Results : Local anesthesia was maintained. Lipoma sized 3.0×1.0×1.0cm was clearly removed. Adverse effects were not reported until the clear skin adhesion. Conclusions : Lipoma were surgically removed without any complications by using pharmacopuncture and oral herbal medicines that have anti-inflammatory effects. Korean medicine has the potential for surgery and needs to extend the range of surgical treatment.

Methods: One patient who was diagnosed with polycythemia vera was treated using different modalities of herbs, acupuncture, and pharmacopuncture. An herbal formula, Yongdamsagan-tang was given three times a day with daily acupuncture treatment session, in addition to Soyeom and Jahageo pharmacopuncture injection which were administered three times a week. After treatment, patient's symptoms and blood test results were observed and analyzed. Results: After ten days of treatment, the patient had shown improvements in symptoms of headache, dizziness, tinnitus, and itchiness. Two months later, laboratory findings continued to be kept within the normal range and the intervals of phlebotomy therapy has extended to three months. Conclusions: This case study shows minimum evidence of safety and efficacy of oriental medicine for managing symptoms of polycythemia vera. Considering this is only a short term, single case study, further research is needed to confirm these results.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report case of hypergranulation tissue that occurred after laparotomy and dissected by CO2 laser. Methods : A 72-year-old female had hypergranulation tissue on the epigastrium. Local anesthesia was achieved with bufonis venenum pharmacopuncture. The CO2 laser was used for dissection. After removal of granulation, irrigation with soyeom pharmacopuncture solution and simple interrupted suture were performed. Yeonkyopaedok-san were administered for 7 days and the suture was removed after 14 days. At last, saengkigo was applied. Results : Hypergranulation tissue sized 1.0×1.0×1.0cm was clearly removed. Including excessive growing of granulation tissue, adverse effects were not reported until the clear skin adhesion. Conclusions : Hypergranulation tissue was surgically removed and sutured completely without any complications by using pharmacopuncture, oral herbal medicine and ointment that have anti-inflammatory effects and wound healing. Through this study, it is hoped that surgery including suture will be actively performed in more diverse diseases in the Korean medicine community.
