  • This paper estimates the effect of networks on innovative performance at the firm level , using Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) dataset Product innovation, product improvement , and process innovation are used as proxies for innovative activity. The explanatory variables such as firm size, market concentration ratio, lagged profitability, foreign ownership, export ratio, firm's age, formal R&D activity, and industrial R&D intensity are yet other considerations. With two year-long (2000 and 2001) data from 1,124 Korean manufacturing firms, we estimated the logistic regression model. The research finding indicates that the external networks have a strong positive effect on innovative output regardless of type of innovation. However, the network effects by partner (other firms or research institutions) vary across the type of innovation. Especially, we found that the user-supplier linkage plays an important role in product ion innovation, product improvement, and process innovation.

  • Purpose - The primary objective of this paper is to empirically examine whether the engagement of socially responsible activities in corporations affect the tendency of tax-avoidance by using the sample of Korean companies. We are particularly interested in Chaebol-affiliated firms, which are a special type of Korean conglomerates. Design/methodology/approach - This study is based on a sample of 5,496 firm-year observation data from 2011 to 2017 by using the ESG ratings from the Korea Corporate Governance Service(KCGS), a ESG rating agency in Korea. For our analysis, the firms were separated into 1,547 Chaebol-affiliated firms and other 3,949 firms. All financial and firm data were extracted from Fn-guide, which provides financial information for Korean listed firms. Findings - We find that CSR is generally positively related to the effective tax rate, which indicates a lower level of tax avoidance for more socially responsible firms. In particular, a positive relationship of social score with GAAP ETR was observed. Research implications or Originality - We find that the positive relationship is robust to the group of chaebol and non-chaebol affiliates unlike extant literature.

  • The M&A of firms has been emerged as the effective means of fast diversification and growth in dynamic environment. However, the empirical research about M&A in Korea has not been implemented rich due to the difficulty of obtaining M&A data. In this research, we empirically investigate the relationships among M&A, environment and firms' performance focused on Korean manufacturing firms, understanding the current practice of M&A in Korea. We use the Manufacturing Productivity Panel Survey Data, which are collected by Korea Productivity Center in 2013. The sample size is 575 and the sample is divided into M&A group and non-M&A group. We conduct logit analysis with the independent variables of environment factors (munificence, dynamic, uncertainty), and firms' performance (sales growth, ROS, labor productivity and Inventory turnover), and dependent variable of M&A group or non M&A group. The results show that M&A is closely related to environment feature and firm performance: M&A firms are likely to be the higher munificence and dynamic and the lower sales growth and higher profitability than non-M&A group. In addition, we also examine the characteristics of firms by M&A types (competitors, customer/supplier and firms from unrelated industry). These results imply that if firms confront the pressure of uncertainty (dynamic) and the lower growth, they tend to choose M&A. Futhermore, to profoundly understand the behavior of firms about M&A, it is required to classify the M&A firms by merge types.

  • The export of agricultural, fisheries, and food products acts as an engine of growth for developing countries in particular. However, exporting these items is easier said than done since issues of certification and inspection, so-called technical barriers to trade (TBT) and sanitary and phytosanitary measures (SPS), in developed markets have worked as major obstacles for exports. This paper examines the institutional aspects and recent trends of South Korea's TBT/SPS-related cases against exporting firms of the developing countries. We suggest a win-win partnership model that can promote cooperative synergies between Korea and developing employing trade-related technical cooperation or ODA (Official Development Aid). Technical cooperation such as the provision of on-spot field consulting services on TBT/SPS-related issues for exporting firms and Korean OEM firms of developing countries can lead to mutual gains. This cooperative partnership can create gains from "the trade-development nexus" for both sides while promoting sustainable trade and investment relationships between Korea and developing countries.

  • This paper intends to increase the performance of export support programs for small-to-medium sized firms promoted by Korea government. A research construct is suggested for effective government support program targeted on the global marketing capability. The data is collected from the firms received the support more than once by Korean governments. The results are shown as follows. First, it is found that those firms who have high propensity to be involved in export business have shown high performance. Second, the firms with high global marketing capability have shown good performance. To be more specific, organizational commitment, strategic initiative, business differentiation, and market knowledge for target markets are found to be critical factors in successful export support program. The business differentiation strategy in target market is very critical. Finally, the degree of program management effectiveness is found to be important in high performance firms. It means that for those firms, much more advanced programs need to be developed. The government should develop diversified programs by considering the degree of global marketing capability.

  • This paper provides an empirical analysis of the effects of trust determinants on firm performance in the buyer-supplier relationships by considering warehousing firms in Busan, South Korea. We employed AVAS transformation regressions to address the limitations of linear regressions and found nonlinear relationships between firm performance and trust determinants. Specifically, "longterm and repeated interactions," "geographical proximity," and "cultures and norms of firms and formal institutions" had positive linear relationships with firm performance, and "information sharing and reciprocity" induced an increasing pattern in firm performance. Finally, "interdependence and asset specificity" and "uncertainty removal" led to a decreasing pattern in firm performance. These results suggest that the relationship between trust and firm performance is contingent on the trust determinants that are important source of trust in buyer-supplier relationships and the influence of trust determinants on firm performance varied according to their levels.

  • Purpose - This paper empirically investigates the relationship between the corporate value chain and performance of non- financial businesses of South Korean stock market companies. It aims to explore the evidence that can be used to infer the relationship between value chains and corporate performance in the case of firms forming a value chain with other companies with the means of an equity investment or a special business relationship. Design/methodology - Non-financial corporations listed from 2011 to 2017 on the securities market of South Korea are analyzed. The data used for analysis are found for transactions with the related party by year for all the corporations of non-financial industries in the securities market. Multiple analysis attempts are conducted including the relationship between the value chain and productivity, corporate value, risk-adjusted corporate value, and mediation effects of productivity. The empirical model employs sixteen variables including the value chain index which identifies its impact on various aspects of business performances. Findings - The results of this study clearly supports the phenomenon that corporate productivity and value are enhanced when the corporation expands its value chain established with domestic related firms and overseas companies. Such a positive effect is statistically significant even after the possible risk factors that accompany the expansion of value chain were considered, and productivity plays the role as a medicating variable in the effect of the value chain on the corporation values. Originality/value - The findings of this study confirms that domestic companies' expansion of their value chain centered on the related firms overseas that helped them in terms of the maximization of their productivity and corporate values. This study shows that Korean government's policy on expanding the corporate GVC can enhance the productivity and value of firms. The expansion of value chain and its impact on business performance has not been explored thoroughly, although it is getting more and more important in the global trade operation.

  • This study is concerned with the factors that influence the radicalness of new product development by firms. The innovativeness of firms' new product development differs in their frequency and radicalness. Based on previous research on product innovations, this study provides a hypothetical model that links firms' internal variables and external relations variables to the radicalness of product innovation, which in turn is linked to marketing performance. For an empirical analysis, the data were collected from South Korean firms. The result of this study provides evidence that the stronger is firms' management attitude toward risk taking, marketing competency, and technical competency, the higher is the possibility of radical product innovation. It also shows that, contrarily to the hypothesis, firms with collective reward system rather than individual reward system are more likely to develop radically new products. This study also shows that the better are firms' R & D collaboration with suppliers and interfaces with customers, the higher is the possibility of radical product innovation.

  • The Internet is now an ubiquitous technology in business and possesses the potential to make the concept of value chain into an attainable reality. We posit that the way the Internet is utilized, the extent of the Internet's impact on business performance, and the extent the firms are prepared to take advantage of the Internet varies from country to country and from industry to industry. Based on data collected from 54 firms in the U.S. and 135 in South Korea, we compared the two countries (U.S. and South Korea) and two major industry groups (manufacturing and service) regarding the pattern of Internet utilization on the Internet from a value chain perspective. The findings show that U.S. companies utilize the Internet more extensively in such areas as human resources management, automation, sales, and advertising than the South Korean counterparts. However, we did not find a statistically significant difference in the way the two countries use the Internet within a value chain model. We also compared Internet practices by industry sector (i.e., service vs. manufacturing) within each country. The results show that firms in the service sector tend to use the Internet more extensively than the manufacturing counterparts in both countries. Particularly in Korea the difference between the sectors was significant in the extent to which they utilized the Internet to support such business activities as inter-organizational alliance, communication, and marketing.
