The Korea Plateau is a continental fragment rifted and partially segmented from the Korean Peninsulaat the initial stage of the opening of the East Sea (Japan Sea). We interpreted marine seismic profiles from the South Korea Plateau in conjunction with swath bathymetric to investigate processes of con-tjnental rifting and separation of the southwestern Japan Arc. The SouU-i Korea Plateau preserves funda-mental elements of rift architecture comprising a seaward succession of a rift basin and an uplifted rift flank passing into the slope, typical of a passive continental margin. Two distinguished rift basins (Onnuri and Bandal Basins) in the South Korea Plateau are bounded by major synthetic and smaller antithetic faults, creating wide and symmetric profiles. The large-offset border fault zones of these basins have convex dip slopes and demonstrate a zig-zag arrangement along strike. Rifting was primarily controlled by normal faulting resulting from extension orthogonal to the inferred line of breakup along the base ofthe slope rather U-ian strike-slip deformation. Two extension direcdons for rifdng are recog-nized; U-ie Onnuri Basin was rifted in U-ie EW direction; U-ie Bandal Basin in U-ie EW and NW-SE directions, suggesting two rift stages. We interpret that the E-W direction represents initial rifting at the inner margin; while the Japan Basin widened, rifting propagated repeatedly from the Japan Basin to the southeast toward the Korean margin but could not penetrate the strong continental lithosphere of the Korean Shield and changed direction to the south, resulting in E-W extension to create the rift basins at the Korean margin. The Hupo Basin to the south of the Korea Plateau is estimated to have formed in this process. The NW-SE direction probably represents the direction of rifting orthogonal to the inferred line of breakup along the base of the slope of the South Korea Plateau; after breakup the southwestern Japan Arc separated in the SE direction, indicating a response to tensional tectonics associated with the subduction of the Pacific Plate in the NE direction. We suggest that structural evolution of the eastern Korean margin can be explained by the processes occurring at the passive continental margin.
This study details grain-size distributions (GSDs) of carbonate and biogenic opal fractions of the sediments retrieved from the South Korea Plateau in the East Sea and draws paleocanographic implications from them. The opal-fraction GSDs show fine modes of 10.3 ㎛ and coarse modes of 102.5 ㎛ on average. The fine-mode grains of opal fractions mainly consist of small diatoms and radiolarians including their broken frustules, while the coarse-mode grains are mostly comprised of large warm-water diatoms and radiolarians. Significant positive correlation between opal contents and abundances of the coarse-mode GSDs in the total GSDs suggests that the abundances of the coarse-mode GSDs were controlled by the increased surface productivity of warm-water diatoms during interglacial stages. The carbonate-fraction GSDs show fine modes of 2.4 ㎛ and coarse modes of 99.1 ㎛ on average. The fine-mode grains mainly consist of coccolithophores, while the coarse-mode grains are mostly comprised of intact or broken planktonic foraminifera. The abundances of coarse-mode and fine-mode GSDs were not correlated with carbonate contents, suggesting a complex control exerted by both the degree of carbonate dissolution and the productivity of coccolithophores on the carbonate-fraction GSDs.

Electrolytic polishing is the anodic dissolution process in the transpassive state. It removes non-metallic inclusion and improves mechanical and corrosion resistance of stainless steel. If there is a Bailby layer, it will be removed and the true structure of the surface will be restored. Electrolytic polishing is normally used to remove a very thin layer of material from the surface of metal object. A new electrolyte composed of phosphoric, sulfuric and distilled water has been developed in this study. Two current density, high & low current density regions, have been applied in this study. In this study, In the region of high current density, there is no plateau region but excellent electrolytic polishing effect can be accomplished in short machining time because material removel process and leveling process occur simultaneously. In the low current density region, there can be found plateau region. The material removal process and leveling process occur successively. The aim of this work is to determine electrolytic polishing for stainless steel in terms of high & low current density and workpiece surface roughness.

Aconitum kaimaense Uyeki & Sakata was first collected by Uyeki & Sakata at Bujeon Plateau in Hamgyongnam-do and reported as a new species and recorded in Enumeration of Korean Plants (Pak, 1949). A. kaimaense was taxonomically treated under the name of Aconitum jaluense Kom in A Revision of Aconitun Subgenus Aconitum (Ranunculaceae) of East asia. (Kadota, 1987), and it was also treated as synonym in Korea(1996, 2007, 2011). A. kaimaense has erect or apically slightly curved stem, dense corymb inflorescence, pubescent pedicels, yellowish white sepals and carpels 5(or 4) pubescent. In this study, to investigate the taxonomic location of A. kaimaense, we conducted literature observation, sample observations in KYO, TNS, KH, SNU, SKK, and field research in Korea. The distribution in Hongcheon, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, and Yangyang of Gangwon-do was confimed.
Many researches have shown that NDVI provides a potential methods to derive meaningful metrics that describe ecosystem functions. In this paper we investigated the use of the MODIS NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) to monitor vegetation phenology dynamics of Northern plateau region, North Korea, during last 9-years (2000~2008). The findings of this paper can be summarized as follows. First, the length of growing season ranged from a low of 128 days in 2003 to a high of 176 days in 2000 and 2005. On the average of the last 9 years, the highest NDVI of 0.86 was marked on 28 July. Greenup onset occurs at the start of May, while the senescence begins between late September and October. Second, these annual vegetation cycles were compared with Seorak and Jiri Mountain regions of South Korea which have similar vegetation condition. Greenup onsets in South Korea were observed earlier than those of North Korea and the average time lag between the South and North Korea in Greenup was about 16 days which is a time-resolution of remotely sensed data. Sub-alpine conifers of such areas may be severely affected by the large of phenological characteristics due to the global warming trend.
This paper aimed to investigate the Asian dust source region and climatic condition of source region by the case of Asian dust in south Korea. In order to analyze the weather condition of source region, observed the Asian dust days data and weather data in China were used. The Asian dust days originating from inner-Mongolia were the most frequent. The Asian dust days originating from all the source regions except Loess plateau were increased recently and occurred over the country. In case of Loess plateau, the frequency of the Asian dust days in 1960s was the highest and only the southern region of the south Korea was mostly affected. The relationship between the Asian dust days of Korea and climatic factors of spring and April of source region was significant. The relationship between the Asian dust days originating from the inner Mongolia and sea level pressure of April and relative humidity of spring was negative. The Asian dust days from Gobi had positive relationship with wind gust days and negative relationship with sea level pressure in April. The Asian dust days from Manchuria had negative relationship with precipitation and sea level pressure in April. The Asian dust days from Loess plateau had positive relationship with maximum wind speed and negative relationship with sea level pressure in April.
East Asian noodles developed after the changes of the times. And nowadays, East Asian noodles were existed traditionally : La-myun which was native to China, So-myun which was native to Japan, Apchul-myun which was native to Korea, Jul-myun which generally known in the East Asian and Mibun and Habun which were native to the southern part of China. To examine the geographical distribution of noodles, Apchul-myun is prevalent in the plateau of dry field farming area where grow much buckwheat and Jul-myun is prevalent in the south of rice farming area.

End-member (EM) analysis of grain-size distribution data for detrital fractions of IODP Site U1430 core sediments from the South Korea Plateau (East Sea) identified 4 EMs grain-size populations (EM) which represent either Asian dusts (Hwangsa) or volcanic ashes. The two EMs representing volcanic ashes consist of fine and coarse glass shards with various morphologies and constitute 0-82% of the total grain-size distributions. The 33% mixing percentage of volcanic ash EMs seems appropriate for a cut-off value for discrimination of grain-size data influenced by volcanic ash input from those dominated by Hwangsa.

According to standard procedures as defined in the users handbook for sea level data processes, I was compared to Topex/poseidon sea level data from the first 350days of mission and Tide Gauge sea level data from the Amsterdam- Crozet- Kerguelen region in the South Indian Ocean. The comparison improves significantly when many factors for the corrections were removed, then only the aliased oceanic tidal energy is removed by oceanic tide model in this period. Making the corrections and smoothing the sea level data over 60km along-track segments and the Tide Gauge sea level data for the time series results in the digital correlation and RMS difference between the two data of c=-0.12 and rms=11.4cm, c=0.55 and rms=5.38cm, and c=0.83 and rms=2.83cm for the Amsterdam, Crozet and Kerguelen plateau, respectively. It was also found that the Kerguelen plateau has a comparisons due to propagating signals(the baroclinic Rossby wave with velocity of -3.9~-4.2cm/sec, period of 167days and amplitude of 10cm) that introduce temporal lags($\tau$=10~30days) between the altimeter and tide gauge time series. The conclusion is that on timescales longer than about 10days the RMS sea level errors are less than or of the order of several centimeters and are mainly due to the effects of currents rather than the effects of sterics(water temperature, density) and winds.
This study is a comparative analysis on the variabilities of spring precipitation and atmospheric circulations of 500hPa surfaces between dry years and wet years over the Korean Peninsula. The distribution of variabilities of precipitation in spring are different from month to month. In March, the pattern is west-high and east-low, in April, north-high and south-low, in May, east-high and west-low respectively. In the distribution of 500hPa geopotential height anomaly, dry years of March show west-high and east-low pattern in that negative anomaly zones are formed around the Korean Peninsula and western coast of the northern Pacific Ocean, and positive anomaly zones are formed in the inland of East Asia centered on Siberia. Consequently, the Korean Peninsula and neighboring regions experience dry season when the zonal flows are strong with the positive anomaly zones of zonal components. On the contrary in the wet years the westerlies are weak since the pattern is east-high and west-low in which the positive anomaly zones are formed over the Korean Peninsula centered on the Aleutian Islands and western coast of the northern Pacific Ocean and the negative anomaly zones are formed in the inland of East Asia centered on Tibet Plateau and Siberia. The dry years of April and May show north-high and south-low patterns in that negative anomaly zones are found from the center of the northern Pacific Ocean to the eastern coast of East Asia, and the positive anomaly zones are found in the center of East Asia extending from Aleutian Islands to Tibet Plateau. On the contrary, in the wet years the patterns show south-high and north-low. This study identified not only that there are contrary atmospheric circulation patterms between dry years and wet years over Korean Peninsua in spring, but also there are different atmosphric circulation patterns between early and late spring.
