The structure of the south Korean coastal front, their fluctuation, the properties and the probable effects of the front on the mackerel fishery are discussed based on the data of 26 cruises in 1967-1969 in the southern waters of Korea. In the south Korean coastal water the annual variations of the properties shows the greatest magnitude among the other water masses in the north of East China Sea. The salinity profile provides a fairly accurate description of the interface between the two kinds of water and agree with the temperature structure in winter. The temperature front does not always coincide with the salinity front in summer, while the former corresponds to the later in winter. The sharpest and most stable front between the Tsushima Warm Current and the south Koren coastal water was found in autumn and winter. In autumn 1969, the most successful catches of mackerel was recorded in the south Korean front of great borizontal gradients of properties(temperature 5.0$^{\circ}C$/10miles, salinity 1.2 /10miles) in the east of Cheju Is. If future investigation finds the peculiar oceanographical conditions like that shown in summer, 1969, the conditions of frontal layer in coming autumn will be estimated and finally the success of the mackerel fishery will be predictable from preseason information on temperature and salinity structure in the southern waters of Korea.
In order to investigate the distribution of suspended particulate matter of the surface water in the South Sea of Korea in early winter, the cruise results during 2 to 8 December 2004 were analyzed in relation to the hydrography. The front was formed along the line connecting between Tsushima and Cheju Islands, which divided the water into two water masses; the coastal water with for temperature and for salinity, and the Tsushima Warm Current Water with high temperature and high salinity. In the coastal water the suspended particulte matter was 5.0-6.5 mg/l, while in the oceanic water suspended particulate matter was 4.5-5.0 mg/l. The coastal water showed higher mixing effects, compared to the oceanic area where vertical stratification was clearly formed. These indicate that the distribution of suspended particulate matter was affected by the stratification or mixing of the water column. Also it is suggested that the mixing effects of sea surface cooling and rind play an important role on the distribution of suspended particulate matter in the South Sea of Korea in winter time.
Comprehensive data collection was carried out between 2001-2006 to investigate the concentration levels of chlorophyll-a, nutrients (DIN and DIP), and COD for surface waters of Korean coastal areas. A statistical analysis of these parameters was carried out on the basis of the frequency distribution of their concentration. Furthermore, the numeric grading for chlorophyll-a, DIN, DIP, and COD concentrations were derived statistically from the normalized frequency distribution of log-transformed data. The statistical grading clearly reflects the water quality characteristics of three Korean coastal water bodies (Western, Southern and Eastern coastal zones), which indicate common environmental and ecological characteristics. So, this study could provide useful information to set up the guideline for water quality assessment of Korean coasts.

Variation of anchovy spawning grounds was analyzed based on egg distribution and oceanographic factors in southern coastal waters of Korea in April, June, and August of 2003 and 2004. Environmental factors showed a range of $10.2{\sim}30.7^{\circ}C$ in surface temperature, 25.7~34.7 in surface salinity, $0.14{\sim}0.67{\mu}g/L$ in chlorophyll-a, and $111.52{\sim}262.37mg/m^2$ in zooplankton biomass. Eggs were mainly distributed in temperatures of $14.7{\sim}26.9^{\circ}C$ and salinities of 31.0~34.6 in accordance with seasonal variation of temperature and salinity. Egg density increased in accordance with the high level of zooplankton biomass during the summer season. Anchovy spawning grounds during August of 2004 tended to concentrate in the outward front area between offshore warm-water and coastal cool-water masses.

The Korea Strait becomes deeper than 200 m from south to north in general except coastal area, whereas its southern part is shallower than 125 m except for a deep trough (Fig.1). The flow in the Korea Strait could be simplified as two layers (Isobe, 1995); the Tsushima Warm Water in the upper layer and the Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW) in the lower layer (Fig.2). (omitted)
The study on the variation coefficient of water temperature and salinity was comducted during the year from 1968 to 1980 in the Southern Sea of Korea. The results obtaland from the study as followes; 1. The variation coefficient of water temperature and salinity wewe large either at the front area or the thermocline and malocline area. 2. The variation coefficient of water temperature was the largest at the time when the power was strong ty each water mass(The largest value in Tsushima and Yellow Sea Warm Current area was occurred at the 50m layer in the Summer, and that in the South Korean Coastal Water area and the Southern Part of Yellow Sea was at all layer in the Winter). 3. The variation coefficient of salinity was the largest at the surface layer in warm current area that was influenced by the low salinity of the East China Coastal Water in the Summer ,and that of salinity in the South Korean Coastal Water area and Soutern Part of Yellow Sea was nearly half of the value of the warm current area.
Seasonal to inter-annual variations of water properties in the western channel of the Korea Strait are investigated using quasi-monthly hydrographic observations collected during 2006-2010. Weak vertical temperature and salinity gradients are observed during the winter months and these remain until May. At the upper layer, temperature increases from March and reaches a maximum in August, while salinity decreases during the same period. Near-bottom water shows low temperatures during late winter and fall with a minimum peak in September. Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water produces thick layers (>20 m) in 2006 and 2010, while it is observed very near the bottom with relatively high temperature in 2008 and 2009.
The feeding habits of juvenile and young Seriola quinqueradiata, which were collected by a hand net and set net in coastal waters of the South Sea during the period from June to August 2014 and 2015, were analyzed. The size range of juveniles was 4.9-10.9 cm FL, and that of young S. quinqueradiata was 11.0-20.4 cm FL. Important prey items in the diets of juveniles were euphausiacea and copepoda, dominated by the Euphausia sp., Paracalanus sp. and Calanus sinicus while the diets of the young consisted mainly of pisces, dominated by Engraulis japonicus, Trachurus japonicus. Stomach content compositions differed significantly among body size levels in both the juveniles and young (ANOSIM, P<0.05). With increasing size, the mN/ST constantly decreased while the mW/ST constantly increased (one-way ANOVA). Graphical analysis of the diet composition showed that juvenile S. quinqueradiata are generalized feeders, young is a specialized feeders characterized by strong individual feeding specialization.
Coastal marine ecosystems continue to suffer unrelenting pressures from human population growth, increased development, and climate change. Moreover, these systems' capacity for self-repair is declining with such increases in anthropogenic production of various pollutants. What is the present health status or condition of the coastal ecosystem? If our coastal areas are unhealthy, which conditions are considered serious? To answer such questions, the United States, Canada, and Australia are currently assessing coastal ecosystem health using systematic monitoring programs as well as identifying and implementing management plans to improve the health of degraded coastal ecosystems. To evaluate marine environments, Korea is currently using a limited number of factors to estimate water quality. In fact, we are ill-prepared for assessing coastal ecosystem health because no biologically specific criteria are in place to measure the responses to various pollutants. We should select ecosystem-specific indicators from physicochemical stressors and evaluate the subsequent biological responses within each ecosystem. Furthermore, a set of practical indicators should be generated by considering the characteristics and uses of a local coastal area and the key issues at hand. The values of indicators should be presented as indices that allow understanding by the general public as well as by practitioners, policy makers, environmental managers and other stakeholders.

This research mainly focuses on examining the applicability of the deterministic model SLOSH (Sea, Lake and Overland Surges from Hurricanes) on Seas covering South Korea. Also, a simple bathtub approach which estimates coastal inundation area is validated as a first step of estimating effects of sea-level rise on the coastal cities of South Korea according to climate change. Firstly, the typhoon-induced surges are obtained from the model SLOSH by adopting historical typhoons MAEMI (0314) and BOLAVEN (1215). The results are compared to observational, typhoon-induced surge heights at several tidal stations. The coastal inundation area is estimated by comparing the maximum envelop of waves (MEOW) and the elevation of coastal land. It reproduces well the inundation area. It can be seen that this research gained applicability for estimating further potential coastal inundation with climate changes.
