Influence of Modeling Errors in the Boundary Element Analysis of EEG Forward Problems upon the Solution Accuracy

  • Accurate electroencephalography (EEG) forward calculation is of importance for the accurate estimation of neuronal electrical sources. Conventional studies concerning the EEG forward problems have investigated various factors influencing the forward solution accuracy, e.g. tissue conductivity values in head compartments, anisotropic conductivity distribution of a head model, tessellation patterns of boundary element models, the number of elements used for boundary/finite element method (BEM/FEM), and so on. In the present paper, we investigated the influence of modeling errors in the boundary element volume conductor models upon the accuracy of the EEG forward solutions. From our simulation results, we could confirm that accurate construction of boundary element models is one of the key factors in obtaining accurate EEG forward solutions from BEM. Among three boundaries (scalp, outer skull, and inner skull boundary), the solution errors originated from the modeling error in the scalp boundary were most significant. We found that the nonuniform error distribution on the scalp surface is closely related to the electrode configuration and the error distributions on the outer and inner skull boundaries have statistically meaningful similarity to the curvature distributions of the boundary surfaces. Our simulation results also demonstrated that the accumulation of small modeling errors could lead to considerable errors in the EEG source localization. It is expected that our finding can be a useful reference in generating boundary element head models.

Modeling of individual head-related impulse responses using a set of general basis functions (보편적인 기저함수를 이용한 개인의 머리전달함수 모델링)

  • A principal components analysis (PCA) of the median head-related impulse responses (HRIRs) in the CIPIC HRTF database reveals that the individual HRIRs can be adequately reconstructed by a linear combination of 12 orthonormal basis functions. These basis functions can be used generally to model arbitrary HRIRs, which are not included in the process to obtain the basis functions. To clarify whether these basis functions can be used to model other set of arbitrary HRIRs, an numerical error analysis for modeling and a series of subjective listening tests were carried out using the measured and modeled HRIRs. The results showed that the set of individual HRIRs, which were measured in our lab using different measurement conditions, techniques, and source positions, can be well modeled with reasonable accuracy. Furthermore, all subjects reported not only the accurate vertical perception but also the front-back discrimination with the modeled HRIRs based on 12 basis functions. However, as less basis functions were used for HRIR modeling, the modeling accuracy and localization performance deteriorated.

  • 배열센서를 사용한 표적의 위치 추정은 레이다 및 소나에서 잘 알려진 문제이다. 최근에 Lee 등은 1 차원 수평 선배열 센서만을 사용하여 다중경로를 통해 들어오는 신호로부터 표적의 3 차원 위치를 추정하였다. 그러나 이 알고리즘에서 수중에서의 음속은 수심에 관계없이 일정하다고 가정하였기 때문에 음속이 수심에 따라 다양하게 변화하는 실제 수중환경에서는 그 추정성능이 현저히 저하된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 표적의 거리, 깊이, 방위각으로 구성되는 3 차원 위치 추정을 위해 비균일 음속환경에서의 음파전달모델(ray propagation model)을 이용한 ML 기법(maximum likelihood estimation)을 적용하였으며 일정한 음속을 가정한 Lee 기법의 추정치를 초기값으로 한 탐색을 통해 ML 기법의 연산량을 감소시켰다.

Magnetoencephalography in pediatric epilepsy

  • Magnetoencephalography (MEG) records the magnetic field generated by electrical activity of cortical neurons. The signal is not distorted or attenuated, and it is contactless recording that can be performed comfortably even for longer than an hour. It has excellent and decent temporal resolution, especially when it is combined with the patient's own brain magnetic resonance imaging (magnetic source imaging). Data of MEG and electroencephalography are not mutually exclusive and it is recorded simultaneously and interpreted together. MEG has been shown to be useful in detecting the irritative zone in both lesional and nonlesional epilepsy surgery. It has provided valuable and additive information regarding the lesion that should be resected in epilepsy surgery. Better outcomes in epilepsy surgery were related to the localization of the irritative zone with MEG. The value of MEG in epilepsy surgery is recruiting more patients to epilepsy surgery and providing critical information for surgical planning. MEG cortical mapping is helpful in younger pediatric patients, especially when the epileptogenic zone is close to the eloquent cortex. MEG is also used in both basic and clinical research of epilepsy other than surgery. MEG is a valuable diagnostic modality for diagnosis and treatment, as well as research in epilepsy.

Bearing Estimation of Narrow Band Acoustic Signals Using Cardioid Beamforming Algorithm in Shallow Water

  • This paper suggests the Cardioid beamforming algorithm of the doublet sensors employing DIFAR (directional frequency analysis and recording) sensor signals in the frequency domain. The algorithm enables target bearing estimation using the signals from directional sensors. The algorithm verifies its applicability by successfully estimating bearings of a target projecting ten narrow-band signals in shallow water. The estimated bearings agree very well with those from GPS (global positioning system) data. Assuming the bearings from GPS data to be real values, the estimation errors are analyzed statistically. The histogram of estimation errors in each frequency have Gaussian shape, the mean and standard deviation dropping in the ranges -1.1°∼ 6.7°and 13.3∼43.6°, respectively. Estimation errors are caused by SNR (signal to noise ratio) degradation due to propagation loss between the source and receiver, daily fluctuating geo-magnetic fields, and non-stationary background noises. If multiple DIFAR systems are employed, in addition to bearing, range information could be estimated and finally localization or tracking of a target is possible.

Noise Sources Localization on High-Speed Trains by using a Microphone Array (마이크로폰 어레이를 이용한 고속철도 차량의 소음원 도출 연구)

  • In this paper, noise of Korean high-speed trains (KTX) running at different speed from 150 to 300km/h was measured by a microphone array system. From the measurement, relation between maximum sound pressure levels and train moving speeds of KTX was drawn and a regression coefficient from the relation was also derived. Moreover, increases of SPL with speeds of KTX were analyzed in the frequency domain. From the analysis, sound characteristics of passing-by noise of KTX were provided. Then, dominant noise source areas were obtained from the measurements and propagation patterns of KTX in vertical direction were also investigated. Finally, noise sources of KTX were identified from inspection of noise maps.

  • Recently, RFID has become popular in the field of remote sensing applications. Location awareness is one of the most important keys to deploying RFID for advanced object tracking. Generally, multiple reference RF stations or additional sensors are used for the location sensing with RFID, but, particularly in indoor environments, spatial layout and cost problems limit the applicability of those approaches. In this paper, we propose a novel method for location sensing with active RFID systems not requiring the need for reference stations or additional sensors. The system triangulates the position of RF signal source using the signal pattern of the loop antenna connected to the power detector. The power detector consists of a signal strength detector and a signal analysis unit. The signal analysis unit indicates the signal strength and serial number using the signal from the strength detector, and provides the direction of the signal to the application target. We designed three different signal analysis units depending on the threshold type. The developed system can sense the direction to the transponder located over 10 m away within the maximum error of $5^{\circ}$. It falls within a reasonable range in our normal office environment.

Factors for Speech Signal Time Delay Estimation (음성 신호를 이용한 시간지연 추정에 미치는 영향들에 관한 연구)

  • Since it needs the light computational load and small database, sound source localization method using time delay of arrival(TDOA method) is applied at many research fields such as a robot auditory system, teleconferencing and so on. Researches for time delay estimation, which is the most important thing of TDOA method, had been studied broadly. However studies about factors for time delay estimation are insufficient, especially in case of real environment application. In 1997, Brandstein and Silverman announced that performance of time delay estimation deteriorates as reverberant time of room increases. Even though reverberant time of room is same, performance of estimation is different as the specific part of signals. In order to know that reason, we studied and analyzed the factors for time delay estimation using speech signal and room impulse response. In result, we can know that performance of time delay estimation is changed by different R/D ratio and signal characteristics in spite of same reverberant time. Also, we define the performance index(PI) to show a similar tendency to R/D ratio, and propose the method to improve the performance of time delay estimation with PI.

Motion Correction in PET/CT Images (PET/CT 영상 움직임 보정)

  • PET/CT fused image with anatomical and functional information have improved medical diagnosis and interpretation. This fusion has resulted in more precise localization and characterization of sites of radio-tracer uptake. However, a motion during whole-body imaging has been recognized as a source of image quality degradation and reduced the quantitative accuracy of PET/CT study. The respiratory motion problem is more challenging in combined PET/CT imaging. In combined PET/CT, CT is used to localize tumors and to correct for attenuation in the PET images. An accurate spatial registration of PET and CT image sets is a prerequisite for accurate diagnosis and SUV measurement. Correcting for the spatial mismatch caused by motion represents a particular challenge for the requisite registration accuracy as a result of differences in PET/CT image. This paper provides a brief summary of the materials and methods involved in multiple investigations of the correction for respiratory motion in PET/CT imaging, with the goal of improving image quality and quantitative accuracy.

Underwater Moving Source Tracking Using a Coherent Broad-band Matched Field Processing Technology (일관성 광대역 정합장처리에 의한 수중 이동음원의 위치추적)

  • The shallow-water environment presents additional challenges arising from the complex interaction patterns of the sound with the sea bed. In order to overcome the difficulties generated by shallow-water propagation, broad-band matched field processing has been employed in an effort to increase robustness by utilizing multiple frequency information. In this paper, a coherent broad-band matched field processor is introduced that incorporates the spatial coherence of the acoustic field not only over one frequency but across frequencies. The incoherent and coherent processors are applied to the experimental data where it is shown that both processors give a high probability of correct localization. Also it is found that a coherent processor has better performance in the sidelobe pattern of ambiguity surfaces.
