  • Very Large Floating Structures have been planned for effective utilization of ocean space in recent years. The nonerctangular VLFS usually has a control tower to guide airplane securely. This paper presents an effective method for calculating the wave induced hydroelastic responses of VLFS considering the effect of control tower-shapes. The source and dipole distribution method is used to calculate the plate. The rigidity matrix for VLFS is formulated by finite element method using a plate theory. The calculated results for nonerctangular VLFS with a control tower are compared with those for VLFS without a control tower.

  • Controlled source audio-frequency magnetotelluric (CSAMT) has the great advantage of efficient mapping resistivity distribution and relatively deep depth of investigation. Moreover, CSAMT may be regarded more attractive than audio-frequency magnetotelluric in the sense of the strong and controllable signal. However, it has the problem such as undershoot and/or near-field effect that is hard to be interpreted if the interpretation method of MT is directly applied. The problem arises from the existance of controlled source which makes CSAMT attractive. So the characteristics of CSAMT response should be thoroughly understood prior to interpretation stage. In this study, numerical modeling program for horizontally layered earth was developped for the interpretation of CSAMT field data. CSAMT field survey was run as a follow-up to resistivity dipole-dipole study over the same survey line at Bongmyung coal mine. The survey used a grounded dipole source 2 Km in length and located 7.5Km south in this study. A good agreement between field CSAMT data and calculated data was demonstrated even in geologically complex earth situations.

  • As a typoon gets into harbour, a moored ships shows erratic motions and even mooring line failures is occurred. Such troubles may be caused by harbour resonance phenomena, result in large motion amplitudes at law frequency, which is closed to the natural frequency of the moored ship. The nonlinear motions of a moored ship beside quay are simulated under external forces due to wave, current including mooring forces in time domain. The forces due to waves are obtained from source and dipole distribution method in the frequency domain. The current forces are calculated by using slow motion maneuvering equation in the horizontal plane. The wind forces are calculated from emperical formula of ABS and the mooring forces of ropes and fenders are modeled as linear spring.

  • This paper presents the penetrated electric fields and resonant frequencies inside a metallic enclosure with aperture excited by an external dipole source. In the theoretical analysis, integral equations for the current distribution and electric field distributions on the aperture are solved by applying Galerkin\`s method of moments. The results show that the electric fields inside metallic enclosure is maximum at the near the aperture and resonant frequencies are the same as calculated of the enclosure without aperture. To verify the theoretical analysis the electric field inside enclosure and resonant frequencies are compared with the experimental results.

  • A computer program is developed for the prediction of the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics in the basic design step of axial flow fan. The flow field and the performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuations induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate via dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present method are favorably compared with the test data of actual fan. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful in optimizing design variables of fan with high efficiency and low noise level.

  • We have investigated the electric resistivity structure of the fault zone located in the Hongseong area where a big earthquake with M 5.0 occurred in 1978. Usually, Electric and Electromagnetic methods are broadly operated in the field of engineering works since these methods are effective to understand the distribution of geological weak zones - fault or fracture zones. We have conducted the dipole-dipole array resistivity method and MT(magnetotelluric) method and interpreted the resistivity distribution of the fault zone with the aid of various inversion methods. An MT survey was performed at 18 points along a 2.9 km survey line perpendicular to the fault line and a magnetic dipole source was used to enhance the S/N ratio in the high frequency. A Electric dipole-dipole array resistivity survey with the dipole length of 50 meters was carried out perpendicular to the fault. In view of two survey results, the fault marks the boundary between two opposite resistivity structures, especially the low resistivity zone is exhibited deeply through the prospective fault line. The result that the low resistivity zone is located at the center of the fault zone corresponds with the fact that the fault zone of the Hongseong area is active. We expect these results to provide basic information about the physical properties of fault zones in Korea.

  • A potential based panel method is used to predict the open water characteristics of spade-type rudders. The inflow velocity is assumed to be constant in lime and uniform in space. Source and dipole are distributed on the rudder surface. It is assumed that the wake surface is streaming from trailing edge and it is represented by dipole distribution. In this paper, wake geometry is assumed by imposing appropriate conditions at the trailing edge and far from the body. The effects of wake geometry are studied. The pressure Kutta condition is applied at the trailing edge, the effects of which are compared with those of two-dimensional Kutta condition. The results of calculations for a spade-type rudder are compared with published results. It is concluded that this approach shows fairly good agreement with experimental results and can be used in the initial design stage of a rudder.

  • A noise prediction method of axial flow fan is developed by incorporating through-flow method and vortex shedding noise model. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuation induced by wake vortices of fan blades and radiate as diploe distribution. The wake vortices are analyzed by combining Karman vortex street model and through-flow analysis results, and the vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by thin airfoil theory. The predicted sound pressure levels and directivity patterns of fan noise by the present method are favorably compared with fan noise test data. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful for predicting the aero-acoustic performance map of the fan operated at off-design point.

  • Groundwater in crystalline basement is controlled primarily by tectonic fractures. It is evident that the delineation of the heavily faulted area and/or fractures deeply developped should be considerable value in deep-seated low enthalphy geothermal water. Electrical and electromagnetic methods have effectively been employed to map hydraulic faults and shear zones for groundwater exploration. In this study VLi; dipoledipole resistivity, controlled source audio~frequency magneto-telluric(CSAMT) and magnetic methods were applied in the Bomun resort area, adjacent to Kyongju city, southeastern part of Korea. The integrated geophysical tools employed in this experiment can be manifested themselves as: 1. Magnetic high for granite intrusions which is more favorable for geothermal gradient increase in depth. 2. VLF cross-over trends for mapping linear shallow conductive fractures and shear zones. 3. Dipole-dipole resistivity distributions for the deep-seated(less than 500m in depth) fractures and shear zones. The dipole-dipole resistivity field data were inverted to the true resistivity distribution with two-dimensional automatic inversion program based on the finite-difference method. 4. CSAMT provides an efficient way of delineating fractures and fault zones if the depth is greater than about 500m.

  • Very large floating structures have rather small motion characteristics except their ends, where the motions become much larger due to the elastic motion of the structure. This paper presents the numerical predictions of hydroelastic behaviors of VLFS in irregular waves. To predict motion responses of structure in irregular waves, the source-dipole distribution method and finite element method is used.
