  • In this paper it is intended to set-up a sound model of the 60,000rpm 100kW prototype APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system, and particularly to investigate the influences of the tie shaft on the rotordynamic characteristics of the entire APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system, employing the dual shaft model. Firstly, a mock-up APU rotor has been constructed to test and verify the model. Analytical natural frequency results have agreed with the corresponding modal test ones to within 5% difference. Then, the rotordynamic characteristics of the prototype APU rotorbearing system have been investigated. Natural vibration and unbalance response analyses results have shown that the inner tie shaft resonance can cause high enough vibration of the outer main rotor shaft. This could be a concern as the rotor journals operate on very thin air film at high speed. It is concluded as a conservative design practice that the inner tie shaft should be explicitly modeled in the rotordynamic analysis of the APU rotor-bearing system.

  • Aeroacoustic technology to improve the acoustic comfort in high-speed became a major topic in vehicle development process. Although most of wind noise reduction and sound quality improvements are possible with full vehicle, the countermeasures should be applied at the early design stage. Acoustic holography technology was used to identify the external wind noise sources of a vehicle in Hyundai Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel. Microphone self-noise reduction techniques and several reference microphone positions are investigated in order to obtain proper results.

  • Micro fans of randomly swept-blades were designed to provide C.P.U. in a personal computer with effective cooling in a very quiet mode. The proto--type axial micro-fans machined by a laser sintering machine were tested against manufactured products by comparing the performance and overall sound pressure level with spectral measurements in an environment suggested by ASHRAE and ANSI standards. The predicted OSPLs and directivity patterns of fans by iDesignFan software were in good agreements with measured data. The newly introduced fans of randomly swept-blades were proved to provide a very promising mode of low noise at small loading conditions.

  • Noise radiated from pile driving operation is one of major sources of community noise pollution and thus its operation method is strictly restricted by regulations. Although the drilling method is now used been commonly used in urban areas because of its activity, the benefit of low noise decreases due to high working cost. In the present work, noise characteristics of pile driving operation are carried out. Based on the study result, a low-noise pile cap for driven piles is developed in order to satisfy both the noise level restriction and the economical efficiency. Effects of pile cap are investigated by a scale model experiment, which is focused on the variation of impact force and sound pressure level. The results show a good possibility of noise reduction by an appropriately designed pile cap.

  • In this paper TRIZ was used to solve noise and dust reduction related to cable carrier chain system. On modern machines in a clean room, the contradictions arose due to increase noise and dust for the high speed were eliminated with 40 principles and seperation rules. As the results, the sound pressure level of the new carrier chain system was reduced to below 40 dB(A), and cleanroom classifications was satisfied with ISO class 4. In these successful results, TRIZ showed its usefulness in solving the design problems even with severe constraints.

  • Due to sustainable development, international environmental regulations have been reinforced continuously. Especially, Kyoto protocol related to energy consumption affects to national production system seriously. Even if railroad is the most environmental- friendly transportation, it is necessary to improve its environment. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a representative tool to evaluate the environment impacts of a product. In the EU's railroad companies, the recycling efficiency and the waste emissions of rolling stocks have improved considering their environment impacts with LCA from a design step. Also, the LCA system of Korean electric motor units has been developed to build an environmentally sound railroad as one of national transportation core technology R&D projects. Therefore, the introduction of LCA will be required to decrease environmental impacts released from rolling stocks in the future.

  • Industry faces a considerable challenge to meet the high demand for reduced impacts and improved environmental performance. With this current stream, railway industry launched a systematic scheme for environmental friendly EMU and its system. An assessment tool which evaluate the environmental impacts of the product through its entire life cycle has been developed. The next step to environmentally sound and sustainable product design, shortly ECODESIGN has come to be essential and necessary as well. Ecodesign requires to identify possible stakeholder requirements first. The paper illustrates way how to define stakeholder requirements in terms of environment and shows approach linking stakeholder requirements to environmental parameters.

  • During the last decade, an increasing interest in Underfloor Air-Conditioning (UFAC) systems has emerged. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the indoor environmental performance of office buildings with UFAC system in order to develope the design prototype of this system. The physical measurements and the Interviewing survey of occupant's sensation responses to the environment were carried out. Measurements and survey were made of the thermal environmental factors such as air temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, globe temperature, and the other several environmental factors such as the sound level and the illuminance of working plane, etc. And, the air quality was evaluated by measuring the concentration of suspended particles, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide in the room. Furthermore, the paper appraises the various indoor environmental factors of the room by using post-occupancy evaluation (POE) method in office building with UFAC system, and thus, it suggests the basic data for assessing the indoor comfort based on field measurements and survey .

  • This study examines the influence of functional interior factors on the variation of indoor environment to propose proper elements for planning studyrooms. Several factors that should be included in planning stages of the rooms are discussed to apply appropriate conditions for a pilot study. Field measurements and survey were performed in actual apartment buildings. The influence of lighting, thermal and acoustical conditions on comfort levels were examined.

  • The insertion loss of a noise barrier comes from the effects of diffraction, transmission loss, absorption coefficient and attenuation by direct propagation. The noise level after the noise barrier, differs reatly from the diffraction on the upper part of the barrier. Maekawa, furze and Anderson presented a empirical formula for calculating the diffraction of a semi infinte screen shaped noise barrier. In this syudy, Noise reduction performance software was developed for the proper design and assessment of new plastic barrier . Predicted sound pressure level from using the software is compared with the site-measurement results to verify the noise reduction performance and feasibility of prediction software for insertion loss of noise barrier.
