Detailed flowfield resulting from the secondary sonic gas injection into a divergent section of supersonic conical nozzle has been numerically investigated. The three-dimensional flowfield associated with the bow-shock/boundary-layer interaction inside the nozzle has been solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with an algebraic and $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The numerical results have been compared with the experimental results for the identical flow conditions, and it is shown that the comparison is satisfactory Effects of different injection pressures of the secondary jet on the shock/boundary-layer interactions and the overall flow structure inside the nozzle have been investigated. The vortex structures behind the shock interaction and wall pressure variations have also been studied.
The measurement of sonic velocities is commonly used as an index of engineering properties of rock, but it is not widely appreciated that this velocity can change markedly with the degree of saturation of the sample. This paper records the nature of this variation as seen in samples of Korean granite. The ISRM method of testing suggested for this index can also create difficulties, especially if vaseline is used as a coupling agent, and invades the samples, and if the sample volume changes with degree of saturation. Careful measurements of the natural variation in sonic velocity that occur in a sample whose saturation is gradually increased may be a means of assessing the relic stresses within it.

Characteristics of micro-sonic/supersonic axi-symmetric jet impinging on a flat plate with a pre-drilled hole were both experimentally and numerically studied, to observe the role of assist-gas jet to eject melted materials from the cut zone in the laser machining. For various Mach numbers of the nozzle and the total pressures of the assist gas, detailed impinging jet flow structures over the plate and the variations of mass flux through the pre-drilled hole were observed. It was found that the present experimental and numerical results show a good agreement, which proves the accountability of the present work. From the present study, it was also observed that the mass flow rate through the hole was closely related with the total pressure loss caused by the Mach disc on the work piece, and that supersonic nozzle could perform more efficient roles as blowing the assist-gas jet in the laser machining, as compared to sonic nozzles.

The present study is an experimental work of the soni $c^ersonic air ejector-diffuser system. The pressure-time dependence in the secondary chamber of this ejector system is measured to investigate the steady operation of the ejector system. Six different primary nozzles of two sonic nozzles, two supersonic nozzles, petal nozzle, and lobed nozzle are employed to drive the ejector system at the conditions of different operating pressure ratios. Static pressures on the ejector-diffuser walls are to analyze the complicated flows occurring inside the system. The volume of the secondary chamber is changed to investigate the effect on the steady operation. the results obtained show that the volume of the secondary chamber does not affect the steady operation of the ejector-diffuser system but the time-dependent pressure in the secondary chamber is a strong function of the volume of the secondary chamber.er.

A prototype of combustion zone monitoring system as been developed and installed into tuyeres of the blast furnace. The system consists of CCD(charge coupled device) cameras, sonic flow meters, an image processor and a personal computer. The personal computer collects raceway luminance data and operational data from the image processor that is connected to the color CCD camera from the blast furnace process computer, respectively. In addition, the sonic flow meters supply coal injection rate data to the personal computer. Then, the personal computer evaluates the combustion conditions with the raceway inspection algorithm. This integrated monitoring system allows us to detect abnormal raceway conditions and the clogging status of coal injection pipe. The image processing techniques of the system enable us to effectively monitor unburnt coal sticking to tuyere tip and injection lance wear conditions. Such a developed system ensures rapid and precise raceway inspection. The image processing capability of the system has helped operator to early detect both the unburnt coal sticking problem and the errosion problem of injection lance. Furthermore, the system could control the abnormal raceway condition based the the analysis results obtained from combustion monitoring.
Recently the application of geophysical well logging to geotechnical site investigation is increasing, because the merit that geophysical logs provide the high resolution and in-situ physical properties in volumes of rock surrounding the borehole. Geophysical well logs are used to identify lithologic boundaries and fracture, to determine the physical properties of rock(i.e., density, velocity etc.), and to detect permeable fracture zones that could be conduits for ground water movement through the rocks. The principle of heat-pulse meter, the calibration of gamma-gamma logging, and principles and data processing of full waveform sonic logging are briefly reviewed, and the case studies of geophysical logs are discussed. Correlation between velocity by sonic logging and rock mass classification such as RMR(Rock Mass Rating) value is considered.

The mine-detection system, which is one of the various mission equipments for Ground Vehicle System, detects mine under the ground. The mine detection sensors comprised of Metal Detection(MD) sensor and Ground Penetration Radar(GPR) are attached on the end of the multi-DOF manipulator. The manipulator moves the sensor to sweep mine areas keeping the pre-determined distance between the sensor and ground to enhance mine detection performance. The detection system can be operated automatically, semi-automatically and manually. When the detection system is operated automatically, the sensor should avoid collisions with unexpected obstacles which may exist on the ground. Two types of ultra-sonic sensors were developed for the mine detection sensor system to keep the appropriate gap between sensor and the ground to avoid the obstacles. Also, mine place marking device was developed.

The paper proposes a new sonic resonance test for a dynamic elastic constant measurement which is based on time-average electronic speckle pattern interferometry(TA-ESPI)and Euler-Bernoulli equation. Previous measurement technique of dynamic elastic constant has the limitation of application for thin film or polymer material because contact to specimen affects the result. TA-ESPI has been developed as a non-contact optical measurement technique which can visualize resonance vibration mode shapes with whole-field. The maximum vibration amplitude at each vibration mode shape is a clue to find the resonance frequencies. The dynamic elastic constant of test material can be easily estimated from Euler-Bernoulli equation using the measured resonance frequencies. The TA-ESPI dynamic elastic constant measurement technique is able to give high accurate elastic modulus of materials through a simple experiment and analysis.

Strong downslope windstorms often occur in the Liguria Region. This part of North-Western Italy is characterised by an almost continuous mountain range along its West-East axis consisting of Maritime Alps and Apennines, which separate the Padan Plain to the North from the Mediterranean Sea to the South. Along this mountain range many valleys occur, frequently perpendicular to the mountain range axis, where strong gap flows sometimes develop from the top of the mountains ridge to the sea. In the framework of the European projects "Wind and Ports" and "Wind, Ports, and Sea", an anemometric monitoring network made up of 15 (ultra)sonic anemometric stations and 2 LiDARs has been realised in the three main commercial ports of Liguria. Thanks to this network two investigations are herein carried out. First, the wind climatology and the main statistical parameters of one Liguria valley have been studied through the analysis of the measurements taken along a period of 4 years by the anemometer placed at its southern exit. Then, the main characteristics of two strong gap flows that occurred in two distinct valley of Liguria are examined. Both these studies focus, on the one hand, on the climatological and meteorological characterisation of the downslope wind events and, on the other hand, on their most relevant quantities that can affect wind engineering problems.
During the formation of large-scale structures in the universe, shocks with the sonic Mach number Ms <~ 5 are naturally induced by supersonic flow motions of baryonic matter in the intracluster medium (ICM). Cosmic rays (CRs) are expected to be accelerated via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at these ICM shocks, although the existence of CR protons in the ICM remains to be confirmed through gamma-ray observations. Based on the results obtained from kinetic plasma simulations, we build an analytic DSA model for weak, quasi-parallel shocks in the test-particle regime. With our DSA model, the CR acceleration efficiency ranges ~ 0.001 - 0.02 in supercritical quasi-parallel shocks with sonic Mach number Ms ~ 2.25 - 5, and the acceleration would be negligible in subcritical shocks wth Ms <~ 2.25. Adopting our DSA model, we estimate gamma-ray and neutrino emissions from clusters of galaxies by performing cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The estimated gamma-ray flux is below the Fermi-LAT upper limit. In addition, the possible neutrino emission due to the decay of charged pions in galaxy clusters would be about <~ 1% of the atmospheric neutrino intensity in the energy range of <~ 100 GeV. In this talk, we will discuss the implication of our results.
