History and Characteristic of Beach Erosion on Songdo Beach in East coast of Korea (송도해안의 해안침식이력 특성)

  • Songdo beach in Pohang City has suffered from bouts of beach erosion due to various reasons over many years. One of the most controversial issues is the extent of the harbor facilities effect on the beach erosion. In this study, the characteristics of erosion to Songdo beach were reanalysed using historical data and some aerial photos. Specifically, we set test cases based on the history of human modifications to the surrounding area and the topographic change around Songdo beach were investigated by 3D topographical deformation model. In the end, based on the results of these various kinds of investigation, this study found multiple causes of Songdo beach erosion.

Application of 3-D Numerical Method (LES-WASS-3D) to Estimation of Nearshore Current at Songdo Beach with Submerged Breakwaters (잠제가 설치 된 부산 송도해수욕장의 해빈류 예측에 관한 3차원 수치해석기법(LES-WASS-3D)의 적용)

  • This study examined the field application of a 3-D numerical model (LES-WASS-3D) to the estimation of the nearshore current at Songdo beach, Busan. The wave and tide conditions observed at Songdo beach during Typhoon Ewiniar (July 10, 2006) were used in a numerical simulation. The numerical wave heights were in good agreement with the field data. The spatial distributions of the wave heights, mean water levels, and mean flows obtained from the numerical simulation are discussed in relation to the bottom topographical change near Songdo beach before and after Typhoon Ewiniar. The results revealed that LES-WASS-3D is a powerful tool for estimating the nearshore current in the field.

A Numerical Simulation of the Shoreline Change and Sediment Transport with Shore Structures at Songdo Beach Youngil Bay, Korea (한국 영일만 송도 해수욕장의 해안선변화 및 표사이동율에 관한 수직 시뮬레이션)

  • Two numerical models of the shoreline change and sediment transport rates, explicit and implicit, are simulated with shore structures such as breakwaters, a jetty, groins and a seawall. The applied study area is songdo Beach, Youngil bay, Korea since it has all the shore structures mentinoed above. The two models investigate the beach line changes and sedimen transport rates for the beach before design of three groins with and without an offshore breakwater. In order to estimate the shoreline changes after three groins were built, the beach response inside the three groin compartiments and the offshore barrier are also investigated. The simulation based on the initial shoreline conditions surveyed by the Hydrographic office, Koreai 1979 and 1984. The breaking wave characteristics are introduced into the models by calculation from the empirical equations and modification from the numerical and hydraulic model test results developed for waves behind an offshore breakwater. The numerical simulation describes well the tendencies of the sand transport and shoreline changes affected by wave diffraction behind a detached breakwater and by interruption of sand transport at three groins.

Monitoring Shoreline Changes at the Songdo Beach, Pohang, during 2003-2010, using Google Earth (Google Earth를 활용한 포항 송도해수욕장의 해안선 변화 감시(2003-2010))

  • This paper examines the spatial and temporal variability in the shoreline boundary caused by artificial structures in Songdo Beach of South Korea. Quickbird Images of 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2010 extracted from Google Earth were used to identify changing trends of shoreline boundary. The most significant changes were observed in area where groins were extensively established, inducing the sand beach much narrower than before in almost 75% of the area($15070.72m^2$ in 2003 to $3877.46m^2$ in 2010). The Google Earth made it possible to identify area-wide patterns of shoreline change subject to many different type of artificial structures, which cannot be acquired by traditional field sampling. Groin heights, lengths and profiles can be modified during maintenance operations if the Google Earth monitoring indicates that the initial layout is not operating properly as a physical barrier to control sediment transport. It is anticipated that this research could be used as a valuable reference to confirm the outputs from past field researches for coastal processes to respond to storms in more visual and quantitative manner.

A Study on the Distribution and Composition of Plastic Debris in the Coastal Beaches of Young-Il Bay (영일만 주변 해수욕장의 미소 플라스틱 분포와 조성에 관한 연구)

  • Floating resin pellets including plastics were surveyed from 7 coastal beaches near Young-il Bay during summer and winter season on 1998 ~ 2000 year. Plastic fabrication materials in the survey were founded with 6 items using the following; resin pellets, plastic debris, styrofoams, cigar filters, wood pieces and charcoals. The results deduced in the areas are as follows: 1. The seasonal variability of the all debris is revealed that summer season were remarkably larger than those of winter. This is deduced it is attributed to meteorological effects, e.g, the seasonal wind strength, current vectors and resorts of crowded people for beach enjoy. And the distribution of plastic debris is Pohang Songdo $12.9ea/m^2$, Pohang Bookbu $8.8ea/m^2$, Togoo $4.9ea/m^2$, Chilpo $3.2ea/m^2$, Hwajin $1.4ea/m^2$, Wolpo and Guryongpo $0.8ea/m^2$ respectively. 2. Compared with each beaches, Songdo beach, northern part beach of Pohang city and Togoo beach have higher densities than those of the others. Especially, the highest densities of all debris were discovered in the Songdo beach of Pohang city. 3. The change of density over the whole year was similarly distributed in quantities and fabrication materials. 4. These surveys were founded that the most parts of plastic debris materials were made up with PE and PP.

The Development of a Model to Predict Beach Evolution (해빈변형 예측 모델의 개발)

  • A model is developed to predict the long-term beach evolution near the long groin considering the combined effects of variation of sea level, wave refraction and diffraction. A numerical solution for this problem is solved by considering the equation as a system subject to the boundary condition for longshore transport rate. One possible method is the centered Crank-Nicolson type implicit scheme. The results which ard obtained by applying this numerical model at Songdo beach, Pohang are as follows. Owing to the approximation used in the calculation of the refraction and diffraction coefficients, the discrepancy between the predicted and actual shoreline occurs to the interior of long groin. However, the shape of shoreline at the exterier of long groins agrees well.

Demand Forecast of Tourists Based on Feasibility Rate -Focusing on installation of offshore cable car in Songdo, Busan- (실현율을 이용한 관광 수요 예측 - 부산 송도해상케이블카 설치를 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • Local governments are commercializing natural environment, one of tourist commodities, to ensure that the proceeds from sale of tourist commodities are returned to local residents(Han Yeong-joo, Lee Moo-yong, 2001). In Songdo beach, Busan, cable car dismantled in 1980s due to the run-down state of the facility is poised for restoration in 26 years and can be said to be of great value as tourist commodity of the region and necessitates the demand forecast. To overcome limitations of demand forecast in existing studies, the analysis was made based on feasibility rate(Gruber index, self-confidence index), the realizable predictive value, for the willingness-to-visit rate when forecasting the demand of visitors. The results of demand forecast suggested that number of visitors would range from approximately 550,684 persons to 1,514,416 persons when the target region for demand forecast was confined to Busan Metropolitan City, and was in the range between 1,013,740 persons and 2,854,340 persons when the target region was expanded to cover Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam. Based on the results of this study, estimation of visitors and demand forecast for Songdo offshore cable car restoration which reflect characteristics of Songdo beach of Busan would provide important basis for proceeding with tourism industry development project.
