The prediction of detection range of a passive sonar system is essential to estimate the performance and to optimize the operation of a developed sonar system. In this paper, a model for the prediction of detection range in a range-dependent ocean environment based on the sonar equation is developed and tested. The prediction model calculates the transmission loss using PE propagation model, signal excess, and the detection probability at each target depth and range. The detection probability is integrated to give the estimated detection range. In order to validate the developed model, two cases are considered. One is the case when target depth is known. The other is the case when the target depth is unknown. The computational results agree well with the previously published results for the range-independent environment. Also, the developed model is applied to the range-dependent ocean environment where the warm eddy exists. The computational results are shown and discussed. The developed model can be used to find the optimal frequency of detection, as well as the optimal search depth for the given range-dependent ocean environment.
This paper addresses estimating the frequency of a cisoid in the presence of white Gaussian noise, which has numerous applications in communications, radar, sonar, and instrumentation and measurement. Due to the nonlinear nature of the frequency estimation problem, there is threshold effect, that is, large error estimates or outliers will occur at sufficiently low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Utilizing the ideas of averaging to increase SNR and weighted linear prediction, an optimal frequency estimator with smaller threshold SNR is developed. Computer simulations are included to compare its mean square error performance with that of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator, improved weighted phase averager, generalized weighted linear predictor, and single weighted sample correlator as well as Cramer-Rao lower bound. In particular, with smaller computational requirement, the proposed estimator can achieve the same threshold and estimation performance of the ML method.

In this paper, we analyze the influences of ship traffic and marine weather information on underwater ambient noise. Ambient noise is an important environmental factor that greatly affects the detection performance of underwater sonar systems. In order to implement an automated system such as prediction of detection performance using artificial intelligence technology, which has been recently studied, it is necessary to obtain and analyze major data related to these. The main sources of ambient noise have various causes. In the case of sonar systems operating in offshore seas, the detection performance is greatly affected by the noise caused by ship traffic and marine weather. Therefore, in this paper, the impact of each data was analyzed using the measurement results of ambient noise obtained in coastal area of the East Sea of Korea, and public data of nearby ship traffic and ocean weather information. As a result, it was observed that the underwater ambient noise was highly correlated with the change of the ship's traffic volume, and that marine environment factors such as wind speed, wave height, and rainfall had an effect on a specific frequency band.
LOw Frequency Analysis Recording (LOFAR) and Demodulation of Envelop Modulation On Noise (DEMON) grams are bearing-time-frequency plots of underwater acoustic signals, to visualize features for passive sonar. Those grams are characterized by tonal components, for which conventional data coding methods are not suitable. In this work, a novel LOFAR/DEMON gram compression algorithm based on binary map and prediction methods is proposed. We first generate a binary map, from which prediction for each frequency bin is determined, and then divide a frame into several macro blocks. For each macro block, we apply intra and inter prediction modes and compute residuals. Then, we perform the prediction of available bins in the binary map and quantize residuals for entropy coding. By transmitting the binary map and prediction modes, the decoder can reconstructs grams using the same process. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides significantly better compression performance on LOFAR and DEMON grams than conventional data coding methods.

Agency for Defense Development (ADD) developed the Submarine Acoustic Information Management System (SAIMS Version 1.0) capable of interfacing some submarine sensors in operation and predicting detection environments for sonars. The major design concepts are as follows: 1) A proper acoustic model is examined and optimized to cover wide spectra of frequency ranges for both active and passive sonars. 2) Interfacing the submarine sensors to an electric navigation chart, the system attempts to maximize the applicability of the information produced. 3) The state-of-the-art database in large area is built and managed on the system. 4) An algorithm, which is able to estimate a full sound speed profile from the limited oceanographic data, is developed and employed on the system. This paper briefly describes design concepts and algorithms embedded in the SAIMS. The applicability of the SAIMS was verified through three sea experiments in October 2003-February 2004.
Planar array of acoustic transducer is normally used in a sonar system. Acoustic radiation makes beam pattern in underwater uses. The main source of the beam pattern is due to the transducer array. Therefore, estimation of the acoustic radiated power is necessary to predict the performance and efficiency of the transducer. As an example of the acoustic radiation power, nine acoustic transducers mounted to a rigid infinite baffle are considered in a theoretical model. Each piston's acoustic radiation consists of self- and mutual-radiation impedances. Total radiation impedances and acoustic radiation power of the transducers are extracted using on the theory of an equivalent electric circuit. The theoretical results reveal that acoustic radiation power of the transducer depends on the mutual coupling effects.

Recent research has shown that quadrupole noise has a significant influence on the overall characteristics of flow-induced noise and on the performance of underwater appendages such as sonar domes. However, advanced research generally uses the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings analogy without considering the quadrupole source to reduce computational cost. In this study, flow-induced noise is predicted by using an LES turbulence model and a developed formulation, called the formulation Q1As method to properly take into account the quadrupole source. The noise around a circular cylinder in an underwater environment is examined for two cases with different velocities. The results from the method are compared to those obtained from the experiments and the permeable FW-H method. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data, with a difference of less than 1 dB, which indicates that the formulation Q1As method is suitable for use in predicting quadrupole noise around underwater appendages.
Ship-radiated noise received by passive sonar that can measure underwater noise can be identified and classified ship using Detection of Envelope Modulation on Noise (DEMON) analysis. However, in a low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) environment, it is difficult to analyze and identify the target frequency line containing ship information in the DEMONgram. In this paper, we conducted a study to extract target frequency lines using semantic segmentation among deep learning techniques for more accurate target identification in a low SNR environment. The semantic segmentation models U-Net, UNet++, and DeepLabv3+ were trained and evaluated using simulated DEMONgram data generated by changing SNR and fundamental frequency, and the DEMONgram prediction performance of DeepShip, a dataset of ship-radiated noise recordings on the strait of Georgia in Canada, was compared using the trained models. As a result of evaluating the trained model with the simulated DEMONgram, it was confirmed that U-Net had the highest performance and that it was possible to extract the target frequency line of the DEMONgram made by DeepShip to some extent.
