The histological profiles and endocrine cells in the bursa of Fabricius of the duck (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhyncos, Linne) were studied at 23 days of incubation, at hatching, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 9 weeks, 10 weeks and 32 weeks after hatching. Histologically epithelium of bursa Fabricius were pseudostratified columnar and simple columnar epithelium. Numerous lymphatic follicles and well developed plica were observed in this study. The sections were reacted immunohistochemically using antisera specific to bovine chromogranin(BCG), serotonin and somatostatin antisera using immunohistochemical methods. A few number of BCG-immunoreactive cells were detected from 23 days of incubation to 5 weeks after hatching and serotonin-immunoreactive cells were also observed from 23 days of incubation to 3 weeks after hatching. No somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were detected in this study.
In order to investigate the regional distribution and relative frequency of the serotonin-, somatostatin- and motilin-immunoreactive cells in the gastrointestinal tract GIT) of the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) with developmental stages, group of bullfrogs subdivided into the tadpole with hindlegs, metamorphosed bullfrog with tail, 2 wk after metamorphosed bullfrog and adult bullfrog, were stained by immunohistochemical methods (PAP methods). Multifarious changes of the regional distribution and relative frequency of the gastrointestinal endocrine cells were observed as developmental stages but motilin-immunoreactive cell ere not detected in this study. Serotonin-immunoreactive cells were detected from 2 wk after metamorphosed bullfrog in the whole GIT. The positive cells were predominant in the pylorus regions. In the adult bullfrog, these cells increased in fundus. On the other hand, somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were observed from the tadpole with hindlegs in the stomach regions. In the metamorphosed bullfrog with tail, they were found in the whole GIT except for the ileum, and increased with developmental stages except for rectum. In the rectum, these cells were not detected after that period. Our results show that most of the immunoreactive cells appear from completed metamorphosed periods when the histological structure of GIT is completely differentiated.

The appearance of some gastrointestinal endocrine cells in the Meckel's diverticulum (MD) of the bean goose, Anser fabalis Latham was observed using specific antisera against serotonin, gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, glucagon, secretin, somatostatin and human pancreatic polypeptide (HPP) with the peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) method. Among these specific antisera, serotonin-, gastrin-, CCK-8-, somatostatin- and HPP-immunoreactive cells were demonstrated in this study. Serotonin-, gastrin- and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were detected at moderate frequency and CCK-8- and HPP-immunoreactive cells was rare and low frequencies, respectively. These immunoreactive cells were located in the superficial epithelium, intestinal crvpt and intestinal glands with spherical or spindle shaped cells having long cytoplasmic processes (open typed-cell). Mucosal layer of MD was composed of simple columnar epithelium and numerous intestinal glands. In addition, numerous lymphatic tissues were also demonstrated. In conclusion, histological profiles of MD were similar to any parts of the large intestine, especially the cecum, but the appearance, distribution and relative frequency of gastrointestinal endocrine cells were similar to those of upper parts of the small intestine. Although the exact digestive functions were unknown, the finding that the appearance, distribution and relative frequency of gastrointestinal endocrine cells in MD is similar to small intestine may be considered as distinct evidence that this organ may have some digestive functions.

We have previously reported that expression of the somatostatin receptor subtypes, sst1-5, is differentially regulated by growth hormone (GH)-releasing hormone (GHRH) and forskolin (FSK), in vitro. GHRH binds to membrane receptors selectively located on pituitary somatotropes, activates adenylyl cyclase (AC) and increases sst1 and sst2 and decreases sst5 mRNA levels, without significantly altering the expression of sst3 and sst4. In contrast FSK directly activates AC in all pituitary cell types and increases sst1 and sst2 mRNA levels and decreases sst3, sst4 and sst5 expression. Two explanations could account for these differential effects: 1) GHRH inhibits sst3 and sst4 expression in somatotropes, but this inhibitory effect is masked by expression of these receptors in unresponsive pituitary cell types, and 2) FSK inhibits sst3 and sst4 expression levels in pituitary cell types other than somatotropes. To differentiate between these two possibilities, somatotropes were sequentially labeled with monkey anti-rat GH antiserum, biotinylated goat anti-human IgG, and streptavidin-PE and subsequently purified by fluorescent-activated cell sorting (FACS). The resultant cell population consisted of 95% somatotropes, as determined by GH immunohistochemistry using a primary GH antiserum different from that used for FACS sorting. Purified somatotropes were cultured for 3 days and treated for 4 h with vehicle, GHRH (10 nM) or FSK ($10{\mu}M$). Total RNA was isolated by column extraction and specific receptor mRNA levels were determined by semi-quantitative multiplex RT-PCR. Under basal conditions, the relative expression levels of the various somatostatin receptor subtypes were sst2>sst5>sst3=sst1> sst4. GHRH treatment increased sst1 and sst2 mRNA levels and decreased sst3, sst4 and sst5 mRNA levels in purified somatotropes, comparable to the effects of FSK on purified somatotropes and mixed pituitary cell cultures. Taken together, these results demonstrate that GHRH acutely modulates the expression of all somatostatin receptor subtypes within GH-producing cells and its actions are likely mediated by activation of AC.
We have studied Meckel's diverticulum(MD) of the duck(Anas platyrhynchos platyrhyncos, Linne) by histological and immunohistochemical methods. Because MD were first observed in 2 weeks after hatching, tissues were taken from 2 weeks to 32 weeks after hatching groups. MD were observed as like any parts of intestinal tract that composed with simple columnar epithelium and numerous mucosal gland especially, cecum except that many lymphocytes were exist in this study. Also a number of bovine chromogranin(BCG)-, serotonin, and somatostatin(SOM)-immunoreactive cells were observed in epithelium and submucosal gland in this study, so it could be suggest that the MD of the duck serve as some digestive and lymphatic functions.
The relative frequency and distribution of bovine chromogranin(BCG)-, serotonin-, somatostatin(SOM)-, and S-100 protein-immunoreactive cells in the proventriculus, gizzard and proventriculus-gizzard junction(P-G junction) of the duck(Anas platyrhynchos platyrhyncos, Linne) were studied using immunohistochemical methods. BCG-, and SOM-immunoreactive cells were detected in all ages of this study in the proventriculus and the gizzard, and BCG-immunoreactive cells were also detected in the P-G junction. SOM-immunoreactive cells were detected rarely on occasions only in 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 9 weeks after hatching. But no S-100 protein-immunoreactive cells were detected in this study.
The relative frequency and distribution of bovine chromogranin(BCG)-, serotonin-, somatostatin(SOM)- and S-100 protein-immunoreactive cells in the intestinal tract of the duck (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhyncos, Linne) with ages were studied using immunohistochemical methods. BCG-immunoreactive cells were detected in duodenum on 23 days of incubation. Thereafter these cells were occurred throughout the intestine. SOM-immunoreactive cells were detected in the small intestine from hatching to 9 weeks. Thereafter they were also observed in colon. Serotonin-immunoreactive cells were detected throughout the intestinal tracts after hatching. These immunoreactive cells were increased with ages except that BCG-immunoreactive cells were decreased with ages from 6 weeks after hatching. BCG- and serotonin-immunoreactive cells were most frequently detected in colon regions and SOM-immunoreactive cells in duodenum regions, but no S-100 protein-immunoreactive cells were detected in this study.
