Currently, Ash-free clean coal producing process by solvent extraction is under development. The produced ash-free clean coal can be directly combusted in a gas turbine which results in substantial improvement of power generation efficiency. However, the clean coal produced by the solvent extraction still contain trace amount of alkali metal which may cause corrosion on turbine blades during the direct combustion. In present work ${\alpha},{\beta}$-metal (Zr and Ti) phosphates and H-Y zeolite were synthesized and their ion exchange characterizations were investigated for the application on alkali metal removal for clean coal production. $Na^+$ ion removal capacities of the metal phosphates and H-Y zeolite were measured and compared in both aqueous solution (100 ppmw, $Na^+$) and coal dissolved N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP, 12 ppmw $Na^+$) at elevated temperature. In aqueous solution, the ${\beta}$ form metal phosphates showed very high ion exchange capacities compared to ${\alpha}$ form. ${\beta}$ form metal phosphates also showed higher $Na^+$ removal capacities than H-Y zeolite. In ion exchange medium of NMP, all the ${\alpha}$ form metal phosphates showed over 90% of $Na^+$ ion removal efficiency in the temperature range of 200 to 400 while that of H-Y zeolite decreased as a half when the temperature was over 350. In addition, the regenerated metal phosphates by acid treatment showed no sign of degradation in $Na^+$ removal efficiency. Among the metal phosphates used, $Zr_{0.75}Ti_{0.25}(HPO_4)_2$ showed the best performance in $Na^+$ removal and is expected to be the most suitable inorganic ion exchanger for the alkali metal removal process.

A scale up tests (380 kg/day) using a continuous solvent extraction and electro-winning system was carried out to separate and recover cobalt from a solution containing 1.91 g/L Co and 14.65 g/L Ni. The solution was obtained during a process including solvent extraction and precipitation stages for removal of Cu and Fe from a synthetic sulfuric acid solution of manganese nodule matte. The optimal condition for solvent extraction was : solvent concentration of 0.22M Na-Cyanex 272 (45% saponified with NaOH) and O:A phase ratios of 1:1.5, 10:1 and 1.5:1 used in extraction, scrubbing and stripping stages, respectively. The extraction and stripping efficiencies were found to be 99.8% and 99.88%, respectively. The stripped solution contained 40.27 g/L Co with 4 ppm Ni. Cobalt metal of 99.963% purity was yielded with current efficiency of 67% and current density of $0.563A/dm^2$ during the electro-winning process.

The purposes of this study are to prepare Hanji fiber-filter sheets using replacement liquid in water-swollen fiber with non-polar solvent such as ethanol, methanol and pentane. The experiments were studied on the selection of optimal non-polar solvent and the optimal drying method for wetted fiber and then were to know physicochemical characteristics of prepared Hanji fiber-filter sheet. The Ethanol as liquid changer in water-swollen fiber was excellent solvent and the optimal drying method for them was freeze drying served with vacuum pump. The bulk density and porosity of prepared fiber sheet from freeze dryer were 0.11-0.13 g/mL, half of natural dried fiber sheet, and 90%, respectively. The results of SEM observation for the fiber sheet prepared with natural drying or heating drying were shown very close structure of fiber wall in dry state. However, the freeze drying sheet were shown the open structure. So, the head loss of freeze drying sheet was very lower than natural drying and heating drying sheets. From the results of BTEX removal experiments, the sheets dried at water wetted condition was shown more higher efficiency than the fiber sheets dried at solvent wetted condition.

Subcritical water acts like an organic solvent at elevated temperature in terms of its physicochemical properties. Taking into account this advantage, the remediation experiments of benzo[a]pyrene contaminated soil (8.45 mg/kg of initial concentration) were conducted using subcritical water extraction apparatus. The effect of operating factors on the removal efficiency was studied at the varying the conditions of the water temperature ranging $200{\sim}300^{\circ}C$, extraction time 30~90 min, and flow rate 0.3~2.0 mL/min. 12 g of benzo[a]pyrene contaminated soil was inserted into the extraction cell and placed into the reactor and then the subcritical water was driven through the cell. In this study, the removal efficiency of benzo[a]pyrene was increased from 55.1 to 98.1% when the temperature increased from 200 to $300^{\circ}C$. The removal efficiency was decreased from 97.0 to 77.0% when the flow rate increased from 0.3 to 2.0 mL/min, suggesting that the extraction is limited by intra-particle diffusion. The 30 min reaction time was determined as an effective treatment time at $250^{\circ}C$. Based on the results, the optimum condition for the remediation of benzo[a]pyrene contaminated soil was suggested to be $250^{\circ}C$, 30 min, and 0.3 mL/min.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Epimastigote forms of T. cruzi can be readily cultured in axenic conditions. Ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are commonly used solvents employed as vehicles for hydrophobic compounds. In order to produce a reference plot of solvent dependent growth inhibition for T. cruzi research, the growth of epimastigotes was analyzed in the presence of different concentrations of ethanol (0.1-4.0%) and DMSO (0.5-7.5%). The ability of the parasites to resume growth after removal of these solvents was also examined. As expected, both ethanol and DMSO produced a dose-dependent inhibition of cellular growth. Parasites could recover normal growth after 9 days in up to 2% ethanol or 5% DMSO. Since DMSO was better tolerated than ethanol, it is thus recommended to prefer DMSO over ethanol in the case of a similar solubility of a given compound.
Extraction is a necessary element in the bioconversion of lignocellulosics to fuels and chemicals. Although various forms of chemical pretreatment of cellulosic materials have been proposed, their effectiveness varies depending on the treatment conditions and substrate. In this study, mixed hardwood (MH) and loblolly pine (LP) were pretreated with dilute acid in a 100 mL accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) at the predetermined optimal conditions: temperature: $170^{\circ}C$, acid concentration: 0.5% (w/v), and reaction time: 2~64 min. This method was highly effective for extracting the hemicellulose fraction. Total xmg (defined as the sum of xylose, mannose, and galactose) can be extracted from milled MH and LP through pressurized dilute acid treatment in maximum yields of 12.6 g/L and 15.3 g/L, respectively, representing 60.5% and 70.4% of the maximum possible yields, respectively. The crystallinity index increased upon pretreatment, reflecting the removal of the amorphous portion of biomass. The crystalline structure of the cellulose in the biomass, however, was not changed by the ASE extraction process.
A simple and modified method is developed to determine a lipase activity. A linear relationship exists between the color intensity and the free fatty acid liberated by enzyme action. The range of determination is from 0.05 to $1.5\;{\mu}moles$ of long chain fatty acid (oleic acid) and 0.2 to $2.0\;{\mu}moles$ of short chain fatty acid (caproic acid). The cumbersome procedure of the removal of the upper aqueous phase which was required in the previous copper soap extraction method was eliminated by the movement of solvent phase to upper phase in the respective biphasic system with a mixture solvent (chloroform: n-hexane:ethanol = 49:49:2) and copper reagent saturated with sodium chloride.

The waste solution discharged from the LCD manufacturing process contains acids like nitric, acetic and phosphoric acid and metal ions such as Al, Mo and other impurities. It is important to remove impurities less than 1 ppm in phosphoric acid to reuse as an etchant because the residual impurities even in sub-ppm concentration in semiconductor materials play a major role on the electronic properties. In this study, a mixed system of solvent extraction, diffusion dialysis and ion-exchange was developed to commercialize in an efficient system fur recovering the high-purity phosphoric acid. By vacuum evaporation, almost 99% of nitric and acetic acid was removed. And by solvent extraction method with tri-octyl phosphate (TOP) as an extractant, the removal of acetic and nitric acid from the acid mixture was achieved effectively at the ratio A/O=1/3 with 4th stage of extraction stage. About 97.5% of Al and 36.7% of Mo were removed by diffusion dialysis. Essentially almost complete removal of metal ions and purification of high-purity phosphoric acid could be obtained by using ion exchange.
The milk protein portion contains sialic acid which may be used as an index for k-casein. In comparison with non fat dry milk (NFDM) and calcium caseinate, the solubility of NFDM protein isolates at the various pH was inferior. Another consideration for the low solubility relates to the possibility that k-casein may have been extracted or possibly modified by the action of alcohol. The k-casein is the principal stabilizing fraction for casein micelle and any changes which result in its destruction or removal would be expected to have potent results. During solvent treatment, 16.5% of sialic acid was extracted in the first extraction solvent, whereas the second treatment caused only a 4.0% loss, based on sialic acid analysis. A study was conducted on the effect of concentration of methanol on loss of sialic acid. The loss of sialic acid decreased as the concentration of methanol increased to above 62% in both the first and second extracted solvent. It appears that loss of sialic acid is attributed to the water fraction rather than the methanol fraction. The effect of addition of the dried extracted solids on solubility was investigated. Protein solubility of NFDM protein isolates was sharply increased by 10% addition of the extracted solids and, thereafter, decreased. Efforts to restore solubility by feeding-back the extracted material supported the concept that removal of surface k-casein may have been a possible factor.

Controlling the stick and slip motions of the contact lines in a confined geometry comprised of a spherical lens with a flat substrate is useful for manufacturing polymer ring patterns. We used a sphere on a flat geometry, by which we could control the interfaces of the solution, vapor and substrate. By this method, hundreds of concentric ring-pattern formations of a linear conjugated polymer, poly [2-methoxy-5-(2-thylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV), were generated with excellent regularity over large areas after complete solvent evaporation. Subsequently, the MEH-PPV ring patterns played a role as a directed template to organize highly regular concentric rings of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs); when a droplet of the SWCNT suspension in water was casted onto the prepared substrate, hydrophobic polymer patterns confined the water dispersed SWCNTs in between the hydrophilicized $SiO_2/Si$ substrate. As the solvent evaporated, SWCNT-rings were formed in between MEH-PPV rings with controlled density. Finally, we used a lift-off process to produce SWCNT patterns by the removal of a sacrificial polymer template with organic solvent. We also fabricated a field effect transistor using self-assembled SWCNT networks on a $SiO_2/Si$ substrate.
