Objective of this research was to assess the effectiveness of the different sources of the zero-valent irons (ZVIs) on the reduction of the toxic Cr(VI) to the nonhazardous Cr(III) in an aqueous solution. The physical and chemical properties of the six ZVIs were determined. Particle size and specific surface area of the ZVIs were in the ranges of $85.55{\sim}196.46{\mu}m\;and\;0.055{\sim}0.091m^2/g$, respectively. Most of the ZVIs contained Fe greater than 98% except for J (93%) and PU (88%). Reduction efficiencies of the ZVI for Cr(VI) reduction were varied with kinds of ZVIs. The J and PU ZVIs reduced 100% and 98% of Cr(VI) in the aqueous solution, respectively, within 3 hrs of reaction. However, PA, F, Sand J1 reduced 74, 65, 29 and 11% of Cr(VI), respectively, after 48 hrs. The pH of the reacting solution was rapidly increased from 3 to $4.34{\sim}9.04$ within 3 hrs. The oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) of the reacting solution was dropped from 600 to 319 mV within 3 hrs following addition of ZVIs to the Cr(VI) contaminated water. The capability of ZVIs for Cr(VI) reduction was the orders of PU > J > PA > F > S > J1, which coincided with the capacities to increase the pH and decrease the redox potentials. Results suggested that the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was derived from the oxidation of the ZVI in the aqueous solution.
The polarographic behavior of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol(PAR) in acetonitrile solution was studied. In order to investigate the type of reduction current at every reduction step, dependence of limiting current on the height of mercury head, solution temperature, and concentration of PAR have been examined. The results were shown that the reduction current was controlled by diffusion. And the effect of proton donor such as water and phenol on DC polarograms of PAR and the reversibility of every reduction wave have been evaluated. Based on the experimental results, the polarographic reduction of PAR in acetonitrile solution occurred in two one-electron steps.
The Polarographic behavior of 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (TAN) in acetonitrile solution was studied. From the DC polarograms of TAN in acetonitrile solution, the type of reduction current and the effect of proton donor such as water have been investigated. In order to explain the reduction mechanism, the number of the electrons for each reduction step was measured by controlled potential coulometric technique and the electrolysis products were identified by UV-Vis spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy. The results were shown that the reduction of TAN in acetonitrile solution occurred with four-one electron steps. In addition, each reduction step was considerably reversible and the reduction current was diffusion controlled.

A mono-disperse Ni powders for multilayer ceramic capacitors were prepared in a large scale by solution reduction method using $NiSO_{4}$$N_{2}$$H_{4}$and NaOH. The exothermic reactions such as Ni-complex formation between highly concentrated $NiSO_{4}$ and $N_{2}$$H_{4}$ and the reduction of $Ni^{2+}$ into Ni provided thermal energy sufficient for spontaneous solution-reduction reaction. Because well-defined Ni particles could be prepared without external heating, the present method was named as 'auto-thermal method'. The formation of Nicomplex, the precipitation of $Ni(OH)_{2}$ gel triggered by NaOH addition, and its reduction into Ni by dissolution-recrystallization route were the reaction mechanism. The preparation of mono-disperse and spherical Ni powder was attributed to uniform distribution of reducing agent $N_{2}$$H_{2}$ within $Ni(OH)_{2}$ gel due to the decomposition of$NiSO_{4}$-$N_{2}$$H_{4}$ complex.

PURPOSES : This research was a fundamental study on the application of an integral $TiO_2$ solution to asphalt concrete pavement. The integral $TiO_2$ solution was produced in pilot production equipment; application of the integral $TiO_2$ solution to asphalt pavement was conducted to examine the pollution-reducing capability of photocatalytic compounds such as $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic $TiO_2$ reacted with air pollutants, converting them into small amounts of relatively benign molecules. METHODS : In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted using five various testing methods. Tensile strength ratio (TSR) and British pendulum test (BPT) were conducted in order to evaluate the properties of asphalt pavement subsequent to the integral $TiO_2$ solution coating. In addition, methylene blue testing, a measurement of nitrate on the coated pavement, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction testing were conducted in order to evaluate photocatalytic reaction. Lastly, a UV-A lamp was used as a light source for photocatalytic reactions. RESULTS : Test results indicated no change in the properties of asphalt pavement following the integral $TiO_2$ solution coating. In order to evaluate the performance of asphalt pavement as a function of $TiO_2$, the moisture susceptibility and skid resistance were investigated. The moisture susceptibility and skid resistance satisfied there quirements related to pavement quality and safety specification. Furthermore, the effects of reduction of air pollution were significantly improved as determined via the methylene blue test and NOx reduction test. The $TiO_2$-paved asphalt specimen exhibited approximately 43% reduction of NOx. CONCLUSIONS : This study has suggested that applying $TiO_2$ rarely impacts asphalt pavement performance measures such as moisture susceptibility and skid resistance, and that its application may be a better means of reducing air pollution. Further studies, such as proper $TiO_2$ dosage rates and compatibility with various pavement types, are required to broaden and generalize its application.
This study was carried out to examine the effect of pretreatment of veneer with aluminum sulfate solution for the manufacture of the kapur plywood on the reduction of urea resin spread. The results were as follows: 1. Specific gravities of plywoods made of the kapur veneers ranged from 0.83 to 0.84 and their moisture contents based on air dry weight showed from 10.6% to 11.4%. These met the Korean Industrial Standards. 2. In the case of dry shear strength for the 3rd class plywood, 40% reduction- spread met K S as well as normal urea resin spread. pH of the aluminum sulfate solution gave better result at pH 4.5 and pH 6 than at pH 3. For the manufacture of the 2nd class plywood, hot and cold water-wet shear strength show the best results at the following conditions; such as 20% reduction spread, pH 4.5 of aluminum sulfate solution and all veneer treatment.
Dilute polymer solutions were injected into turbulent pipe flow of a Newtonian fluid. The local drag reduction for injection of polymer solution at the pipe wall was larger than that at centerline. From the above result we may conclude that the polymer additives were found to influence the flow in the neighborhood of the wall. The effects of the injection apparatus on the local drag reduction are small compared to the drag-reducing effects. The extent of drag reduction increased with polymer concentration and injection flow rate, and the maximum drag reduction obtained were 47% for Polyox Coagulant and 35% for Separan AP-273. In respect to polymer degradation, the polyacrylamide showed better shear stability than the polyethyleneoxide and thus the former expected to have a sharper molecular weight distribution.
In order to prepare the uniform copper particles from copper chloride solution, the reduction behavior of copper particles from copper chloride and the effects of reduction agent and dispersing agent was investigated. In the case that 2.56 M of $C_6H_8O_6$ was used as a reduction agent, the highly dispersed Cu particles with sharp size distribution were generated from 0.96M of copper chloride solution, and the size of Cu particles was $6\~10\;{\mu}m$. To form $Cu(NH_3)_4Cl_2$ complex solution, $NH_4OH$ was added in the copper chloride solution before the reductive reaction of Cu ion. The generated Cu particles have a two kind of shape, spherical and rod-like. In the case that $N_2H_4{\cdot}H_2O$ was used as a reduction agent, the very fine spherical Cu particles with the size of $0.2\~0.5\;{\mu}m$ was obtained. Arabic gum as a dispersing agent was more effective than $Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$.
In the streaming data where data samples arrive sequentially in time, it is difficult to apply the dimension reduction method based on batch learning. Therefore an incremental dimension reduction method for the application to streaming data has been studied. In this paper, we propose an incremental linear discriminant analysis method using the least squared error solution. Instead of computing scatter matrices directly, the proposed method incrementally updates the projective direction for dimension reduction by using the information of a new incoming sample. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is more efficient compared with previously proposed incremental dimension reduction methods.
A study on the preparation of Ag fine particles was performed through a reduction reaction using ascorbic acids as a reductant, which is one of the indispensable processes for the recycling of silver-bearing wastes. Silver nitrate solution in the range of 10~120 mmole/l was used and Tamol NN8906 or PVP was also used as a dispersant in the preparation of Ag fine particles size analyze, SEM, and TEM to determine the particle size and morphology of them. As a result, the reduction reaction of silver ions with ascorbic acid reached equilibrium within 10 min. It was found that about 60% excess of ascorbic acid was required in order to reduce completely silver ions in the solution. The particle size distribution of Ag particles prepared through the reduction reaction showed typically biomodal or trimodal distribution. Especially, initial Ag concentration in the solution, the type and amount of dispersant added during the reduction reaction played an important role in determining the mean particle size of Ag particles.
