Effects of a School-based Intervention Program on Attitude and Knowledge of Household Members Towards a Smoke-free Home: a Cluster Controlled Trial

  • Background: A school-based smoke free home (SFH) program is useful in empowering the mother and child to reduce secondhand smoke exposure but the effects of pretesting on knowledge and attitude has been largely ignored. We aimed to test whether such a program can be effective in Southern Thailand with an additional assessment of the net effect of the pretest. Materials and Methods: A Solomon four-group design was used. Twelve rural primary schools were assigned to one of the four conditions (each with 3 schools): intervention with and without a pretest, control with and without the same pretest. The intervention was performed in the classroom and home over a period of 1 month. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and 3 months after the intervention on whether the home was smoke free and related knowledge and attitude. Results: The intervention could lead to a smoke-free home without statistical significance. Attitude, knowledge and self-confidence on creating a smoke-free home, and self-confidence in avoidance of secondhand smoke exposure and persuading smokers to not smoke in their home were significantly improved. No pretest effect was observed. Conclusions: Gain in attitude, knowledge and self-confidence among family members from the brief school-based education should be enhanced by other measures.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of nutrition instruction using a curriculum guide on nutrition knowledge attitudes and food behaviors of students in a junior high school home economics course. We used three instruments co collect data: a nutrition knowledge test, a food and attitude instrument containing four scales, and a two-part food behavior assessment form A quasi-Solomon four -groups experimental design was used One experimental group was pretested taught nutrition via the curriculum, and posttested A Second experimental group which was not pretested was taught nutrition via the curriculum and posttested One control group was pretested and posttested and a second control group was only posttested Neither control group receive food and nutrition instruction until after the study was complete The results indicate that the experimental group had significantly improved knowledge scores and improved attitude scores on the scale entitled Eating New Foods Nutriton Affects Health Caring about Nutrition Significant changes were observe in posttest scores on the food behavior assessment form Key findings useful in understanding the impact of education on adolescent food choices were that 1) study participants nutrition knowledge improved 2) their attitudes toward nutrition became more positive 3) their intention to include more high-nutrient foods in their diet increased significantly.

Oxidative Stress in Extrahepatic Tissues of Rats Co-Exposed to Aflatoxin B1 and Low Protein Diet

  • Early life exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and low protein diet through complementary foods during weaning is common in parts of Africa and Asia. This study evaluated the effect of co-exposure to AFB1 and low protein diet on the extrahepatic tissues of rats. Twenty-four three-week old weanling male albino rats were used for this study and were randomly assigned into four groups: group 1 served as control and was fed normal protein diet (20% protein), group 2 was fed low protein diet (5% protein), group 3 was fed normal protein diet + 40 ppb AFB1 while group 4 received low protein diet + 40 ppb AFB1, all for eight weeks. Afterward, biomarkers of anemia (packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin) and kidney function (urea, uric acid, and creatinine) were determined in the blood while biomarkers of oxidative stress were determined in the tissues spectrophotometrically. Co-exposure to AFB1 and low protein diet significantly (p < 0.05) decreased body weight gain and PCV, increased biomarkers of kidney functions and induced oxidative stress in the tissues studied. There was significant (p < 0.05) reduction in glutathione concentration while TBARS was significantly increased in the tissues. Co-exposure to AFB1 and low protein diet had additive effects on decreasing the weight gain and potentiation effect of kidney dysfunction in the rats. The co-exposure also decreased antioxidant enzymes and increased oxidant status in the tissues. Our results demonstrate that this co-exposure has deleterious health effects on extrahepatic tissues and should be a public health concern especially in developing countries where AFB1 contamination is common.

기후 변화 주제를 다룬 역사 수업의 환경교육 효과 (The Educational Effect of History Lessons on the Subject of Climate Change Regarding Environmental Awareness)

  • Currently, climate change is regarded as one of the most important environmental issues in the 21st century. However, climate change education is not seriously carried out in schools. This study is concerned about enhancing students' recognition about climate change and actions responding to climate change through an history discipline. More specifically, this study tried to identify the effect of history lessons on environmental education, especially focused on climate change, by performing an experiment. The experiment was designed based on Solomon four-group design and carried out in one high school in Gwangmyeong city. Findings of the experiment are as follows. First, students who had taken the reorganized history lesson based on climate change - that is, students with experimental treatments - gained higher understanding of climate change than before and students of control groups. Second, students with experimental treatments gained higher understanding about relationship between history and climate change. Third, students with experimental treatments showed higher possibility of taking responding actions to climate change. In conclusion, history lessons reorganized with environmental issues, for instance climate change, have big potential for environmental education since they contribute to enhancing environmental recognition and prompting responding actions through exploration the effects of existing historical facts. Interdisciplinary approach like that taken in this study will provide students with more comprehensive and extended prism for the environment.

도시계획·설계 전공 대학생들에 대한 리빙랩 프로젝트 체험 교육의 효과 분석 (An Analysis of the Effect of Living Lab Project Experience Education for Urban Planning and Design Students)

  • 본 연구는 도시계획·설계 전공생들에게 도시 문제 해결을 위한 물리적 환경에 대한 대안제시능력과 함께 날이 갈수록 중요해지고 있는 비물리적 대안을 제시하는 능력을 함양할 수 있도록 관련 비교과과정을 개발하고 그 효과를 분석하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 관련 전공 대학생 총 30명을 대상으로 약 1년 동안 전공 교육 과정과 연계하여 지역 내 유휴공간을 활용한 리빙랩 프로젝트의 비교과과정을 운영한 뒤, 전공만족도, 전공 관련 직업 취직 의사, 학업성취도 등을 분석하였다. 분석을 위해서는 솔로몬 4집단 설계를 활용하여 수업에 참여한 학생들과 참여하지 않은 학생들의 차이를 제시하고자 하였다. 분석 결과 리빙랩 프로젝트의 비교과과정에 참여한 학생들의 전공만족도와 전공 관련 직업취직 의사가 유의한 수준에서 높게 나타났다. 본 연구 결과는 리빙랩 프로젝트라는 수단을 활용하여 도시계획·설계 전공학생들이 지역 주민, 상인과 호흡하며 지역 문제 해결을 위한 물리적·비물리적 대안을 제시하는 능력을 함양하는 과정이 학생들의 전공에 대한 애착과 자긍심에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 점에서 그 시사점이 크다고 할 수 있다.

가정폭력에 노출된 아동의 문제와 개입프로그램에 관한 연구 (Analysis of the Problems of Children Exposed to Family Violence and Clinical Intervention Program for the Children)

  • 본 연구에서는 서울과 대전지역의 초등학교, 사회복지관, 그리고 쉼터를 통하여 가정폭력 노출아동 문제의 실태를 조사하고 일반 아동과의 비교 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 가정폭력 노출아동은 일반아동에 비해 정서문제와 공격성이 심하고, 사회성이 떨어지며, 가정폭력에 대한 인식 및 대처가 부적절하였다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 연구결과와 기존 가정폭력 노출아동을 위한 개입프로그램에 기초하여 쉼터와 일반 기관에서 공통적으로 활용할 수 있는 통합적 집단프로그램을 구성하여 실시하고 그 효과성을 검증하였다. 프로그램에 대한 효과성 검증은 참여 아동에 대한 개별사례분석과 솔로몬4집단설계(Solomon four group design)를 병행하여 실시하였다. 사례분석 결과, 대다수의 사례에서 프로그램이 진행되어감에 따라 초기의 위축되고 소극적인 행동에서 변화하여 점차 자기표현이 증가하고 다른 구성원들을 적극적으로 지지, 격려하는 등의 긍정적인 행동이 나타났다. 솔로몬4집단설계의 공식에 따라 본 프로그램의 순수실험효과를 산정한 결과, 정서문제, 공격성, 사회기술, 가정폭력에 대한 인식 및 대처에 상당한 정도의 순수실험효과를 갖는 것으로 입증되었다.
