  • New metallic powder making processes, named "Centrifugal Emulsification Process(CEP)" and "Mixer and Settler(MS)" have been developed to synthesize rapid solidified metallic powders. Through CEP and MS processings, the high temperature metals as well as the low temperature alloys are manufactured. Also, the effects of rapid solidification on the undercooling, solidification rate and crystallization behaviors can be evaluated effectively through the processes. The standard deviations of the synthesized typical Pb-Sn eutectic powders are 1.63 and 1.51 for CEP and MS respectively, and the average size of the MS powders was $18{\mu}m$. The possibility of the customized not only size and shape control but microstructure control was also shown. Both of the new methods can be applied to continuous powder making processes.

  • Most material of engineering interest undergoes solidification process from liquid to solid state. Identifying the underlying mechanism during solidification process is essential to determine the microstructure of material which governs the physical properties of final product. In this paper, we expand our previous two-dimensional numerical technique to three-dimensional simulation for computing dendritic solidification process with fluid convection. We used Level Contour Reconstruction Method to track the moving liquid-solid interface and Sharp Interface Technique to correctly implement phase changing boundary condition. Three-dimensional results showed clear difference compared to two-dimensional simulation on tip growth rate and velocity.

접촉 열저항을 고려한 합금주조의 응고과정 해석 (An analysis on the solidification process of alloy casting with a contact resistance)

  • The solidification process of Al 4.5%Cu alloy is numerically studied in the presence of contact resistance between mold and cast. Natural convection is considered in the liquid and mushy regions. The porosity approach is applied to the mushy zone modeling and linear variation of the solid fraction on the temperature is assumed. Results show that the mushy region is wider in the case with a contact resistance compared to the perfect contact condition. The temperature of the cast with a temporal variation in the contact heat transfer coefficient changes very rapidly in the early stage of the casting process compared to that with constant contact heat transfer coefficient.

  • In this paper we analyzed bulging condition which affect the quality of continuous casting steel by using the numerical analytic method. First solidification analyses are performed for each cooling zones. Solidification analysis are carried out by one-dimensuional finite difference method. The bulging deformation of cast slab has been calculated with a two-dimensional elasto-plastic and creep finite element model. The adequacy of the model has been checked against the experimental results. From this study the effects of the process variables such as casting speed cooling condition roll pitch are examined. The results from these analyses would be able to apply to the design of continuous casting process.

슬래그를 이용한 중금속 이온의 고정화 (A Study on the Stabilization/ Solidification Process Using Blast Furnace Slag)

  • It is a fundamental experiment to use blast-furnace slag in solidification/stabilization process. The compressive strength and leaching test of Pb and Cr doped samples were evaluated and the effects of heavy-metal ions on the hydration of slag was investigated. Sodium silicates(5wt%) was added as alkali-activator and the effects of replacing a part of slag with flyash or gypsum was also discussed. Pb ion was solidified by encapsulation of matrix. In of slag${\pm}$gypsum binder microstructure was densified by accelerating to form AFt/AFm phase and compressive strength was improved resulting in reducing leaching amount of Pb ion. Cr ion was solidified by substituting with Al ion in aluminate product. Slag+fly ash binder improved compressive strength and decreased leaching amount of Cr ion.

  • In this paper, we proposed the novel device and process design to enhance the uniformity of low-temperature poly-Si TFTs fabricated by sequential lateral solidification (SLS). The proposed design schemes can avert the conventional two-shot SLS process-induced issues. Moreover, different design considerations between conventional excimer laser crystallization and the SLS process were also proposed and discussed.

  • In order to quantitatively evaluate the solidification cracking susceptibility in laser welds of three types of austenitic stainless steels (type 310: A mode, type 316-A: AF mode, type 316-B: FA mode solidifications), the laser beam welding (LBW) transverse-Varestraint tests consisted of multi-mode fiber laser, welding robot and hydraulic pressure system were performed. As the welding speed increased from 1.67 to 40.0 mm/s, the solidification brittle temperature range (BTR) of laser welds for type 316 stainless steels enlarged (316-A: from 37 to 46 K, 316-B: from 14 to 40 K), while the BTR for type 310 stainless steel reduced from 146 to 120 K. In other words, it founds that solidification cracking susceptibility could not be simply mitigated through application of LBW process, and the BTR variation behavior is quite different upon solidification mode of austenitic stainless steels.

  • Solidification of aluminum alloys under moderate pressures has been investigated. Interfacial heat transfer coefficient at the casting/mold interface varies with time after pouring the molten metal into the die cavity, and therefore plays an important role in determining solidification sequence. The heat transfer coefficients were evaluated by using an inverse problem method, based on the measured temperature distribution. The calculated heat transfer coefficients were used for solidification simulation in the squeeze casting process. The effects of applied pressure and positions of insulation in the mold have also been investigated on solidification microstructures and on the formation of macrosegregation of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloys.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate solidification of NH$_{4}$CI-H$_{2}$0 mixtures inside a vertical rectangular enclosure. Solidification process is visualized by the shadowgraph method. Emphasis is placed on the effect of solidification parameters such as the aspect ratio, cooling wall temperature and initial composition. The aspect ratio shows a dominant effect on the number and developing time of the double diffusive layers which reveals the relative strength of solutal convection to thermal convection. Similar flow pattern is observed when the concentration difference between interdendritic liquid and the pure liquid which drives solutal convection is the same regardless of the different cooling wall temperature and initial concentration.

  • This study is to specify the properties of solidification/stabilization of heavy metals in connection with looking over the hydration features of non-sintering cement using industrial by-products. In this study, we added Cr and Pb to non-sintering cement(NSC), ordinary portland cement (OPC), and Blast-furnace slag cement(BSC) to specify the solidification process. Heavy metal leaching test was carried out to evaluate solidification degree of various cement. Follow result, marking no higher than 0.7% of un-solidified ratio of BSC was the most predominant result when we mixed the materials with Cr. 5.8% for NSCI and 6.2% for NSC2. On the contrary, in case of adding Pb, NSCl and NSC2 made better solidification results than those of OPC(below 0.2%) and BSC(below 0.05%), marking nearly 0%.
