Al-Li alloy has a high strength with low density. Practically this alloy should use by the material which made from the rapid solidification. Therefore we examine the solidification structures of alloy with cooling rate. According to cooling rate increased, grain size and secondary dendrite arm spacing were smaller. Also grain size was further smaller by Zr added. To obtain more fine solidification structure, rapid solidification by single roll melt spinning was performed. According to higher wheel speed, cooling rate increased and cell size was smaller. Because of locally different cooling rate, different cell size was obtained in same specimen. More than cooling rate $10^6^{\circ}C$ /sec, zone A(insensible zone to corrosion)was obtained.
The effect of additives on the castability of the AC2BS aluminum alloy, which contains 35% recycled scrap, was investigated. For the wide utilization of the recycled scrap AC2BS aluminum alloy, the research results were compared to those with the AC2B virgin alloy, which is typical Al-Si-Cu alloy system. It was confirmed that the addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B increased the ${\alpha}$-Al nucleation temperature during solidification and decreased the grain size through cooling curve and microstructural observations of the recycled alloy. It was also found that an addition of Al-10%Sr decreased the eutectic Si growth temperature during the solidification process and modified the shape of the eutectic Si of the recycled alloy. The characteristics of fluidity, shrinkage and solidification crack strength were evaluated. For the AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap, both ${\alpha}$-Al grain refinement due to Ti-B and eutectic Si modifications due to Sr contributed to the improvement of the fluidity. The macro- shrinkage ratio increased with additions of both Al-10%Sr and Al-5%Ti-1%B and the micro-shrinkage ratio increased with the addition of Al-10%Sr but decreased with the addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B. The casting characteristics of TiB and Sr-treated AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap are similar to those of AC2B virgin alloy. The improvement of the solidification crack strength of the AC2BS aluminum alloy was possible by the reduction of the grain boundary the stress concentration through the enhancement by both ${\bullet}{\cdot}$-Al refinement and eutectic Si modification. More extensive use of the AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap can be expected in the future.
The solidification cracking susceptibilities of Al-Mg alloy laser welds were assessed using self-restraint tapered specimen crack test. The dependence of cracking susceptibility of Al-Mg alloy laser welds on Mg contents was observed to be similar to that of arc welds in the same materials. The cracking susceptibility of Al-Mg alloy laser welds increased as Mg content increased up to 1.6-1.9 wt.% and then it decreased as Mg content increased further. The peak cracking susceptibility occurred at around 1.6 to 1.9 wt.% Mg for both autogenous and wire feed welds. It was also observed that the cracking susceptibility decreased as the grain size of Al-Mg alloy laser welds decreased, when Mg content was in the range higher than 1.9 wt.%.
Numerical investigation is made to study the effects of thermosolutal convection on the formation of macrosegregation in a Pb-Sn alloy solidification process in a two dimensional confined rectangluar mold. The basic equations are sovled using the Contrinum Model theory with the SIMPE algorithm during the solidification process. In addition, to track the liquid-solid interface with time variations, the moving boundary condition was adopted and moving irregular interface shapes were treated with the time-dependent, boundary-fitted coordinate system. As the temperature reduces from the liquidus to the solidus, the liquid concentration of Sn, the lighter constituent, increases. Then the buoyancy-driven flow due to temperature and liquid composition gradients occurs in the mushy region and forms the complicated macrosegregation maps. belated to this phenomena, effects on the macrosegregation formation depending on the cooling condition and gravity values are examined.
The effect of Re addition and solidification rate on the directional solidification behavior of Ni-Al model alloy has been investigated. Directional solidification (DS) were carried out using the modified Bridgman furnace with various solidification rates. The solid/liquid interface during directional solidification was preserved by quenching the specimen after the desired volume fraction of original liquid was solidified. The equilibrium partition coefficients of Al and Re Were estimated by measuring the compositions at the quenched solid/liquid interface. Then, the effect of Re addition on the elemental segregation behavior was carefully analyzed. The differential scanning calorimetry results showed that the Re addition results in increased ${\gamma}'$ solvus and freezing range of the alloy. It was also shown that the primary dendrite arm spacing gradually decreases with increasing the Re content, while the secondary dendrite arm spacing appears to be independent on the Re content. The compositional analyses clearly revealed that the segregation of Al increased with increasing the Re content and solidification rate, while that of Re was found to be independent on the solidification rate in the range of $10{\sim}100{\mu}m/s$ due to its sluggish diffusion rate in the Ni solid solution.
Polycrystalline Al-Cu ribbons were produced by planar flow casting(PFC). Solidification behavior and microstructual changes of the ribbons have been investigated as a function of ribbon thickness and processing parameters. The solidification front velocity, V varies within the ribbon, decreasing with increasing the distance, S from the wheel-contact surface, as $V=17.6S^{-1}$. In Al-4.5wt%Cu alloy, rapid decrease in solidification velocity toward the free surface causes a change in solidification morphology from planar to cellular, and finally, to dendritic. The length and inclination of columnar grains solidified with planar front were related to the wheel velocity. The transition from particulate degenerate eutectic structure to regular lamellar eutectic structure was observed to be caused by a difference of the relative growth velocites of ${\alpha}-Al$ and ${\theta}$ during solidification in the Al-Cu eutectic alloy.
In the undercooled melt of $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy, the solidification behavior including nucleation and growth of crystals at the micrometer level has been observed in-situ by use of a confocal scanning laser microscope combined with an infrared image furnace. The $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy specimens were cooled from the liquid state to glass transition temperature. 575 K, at various cooling late under a helium gas flow. According to the cooling rate, the morphologies of the solidification front are changed among various types, irregular jog like front, columnar dendritic front, cellular grain, star like shape jog and fine grain, etc. The velocities of the solid-liquid interface are measured to be $10^{-5}{\sim}10^{-8}$ m/s which are at least two orders higher than the theoretical crystal growth rates. Combining the morphologies observed in terms of cooling rates and their solidification behaviors, we conclude that phase separation takes place in the undercooled molten $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy. The continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram was constructed from solidification onset time at various linear cooling conditions with different rate. The CCT diagram suggests that the critical cooling rate for glassy solidification is about 1.5 K/s, which is in agreement with the previous calorimetric findings.
The carbide growth behavior of MAR-M247 LC alloy was investigated by directional solidification and quench method. The carbide volume fraction, trapping and growth behavior were correlated with the growth rate. It was found that the carbide volume fraction decreases at slower growth rate. This decreasing was caused by lower solid-liquid interface trapping ability at the slower growth rate.
Al-Si alloy powder produced by the gas atomizer showed fine eutectic structure between ${\alpha}-dendrites$, that was grown by coupled growth, and there remained small amount of ${\alpha}$ in Al - 20 wt% Si alloy. The morphology of Si in the eutectic structure was largely influenced by the recalescence caused by solidification latent heat, and that was thought to be due to decrement of the surface energy of Si. In modified eutectic Si by rapid solidification, fine twin about $0.01\;{\mu}m$ was observed and growth direction of eutectic Si was <112>. This fact implied that the growth mechanism of eutectic Si in rapid solidification was related to TPRE mechanism. Due to rapid solidification Si was soluble in ${\alpha}-phase$ in Al - 12.6wt%Si alloy up to about 3.4wt%, and the solubility of Si in ${\alpha}-phase$ reaches the equilibrium solubility stare after 60min, holding when it was held isothermally at $253-296^{\circ}C$.
Eutectic and off-eutectic Al-Fe alloys were unidirectionally solidified at the solidification rate of $1{\sim}50\;mm/min$ under the temperature gradients $75{\sim}80^{\circ}C/cm$. The investigation has been carried out for the microstructural variation, phase transition, mechanical properties by means of detailed analyses of stress-strain, micro-Vickers hardness and scanning electron micrography. The thermal stability at elevated temperature has been studied on $Al-Al_6Fe$ eutectic alloy held at $600^{\circ}C$ for $0{\sim}150$ hours. When the solidification rate was less than 10mm/min, the X-ray diffraction and EDS analysis showed the presence of $Al_3Fe$ compound. As the solidification rate more than 20 mm/min, $Al-Al_3Fe$ eutectic phase was transfered into $Al-Al_6Fe$ eutectic phase. The mechanical properties of unidirectionally solidified off-eutectic Al-Fe alloy is better than those of unidirectionally solidified eutecic Al-Fe alloy Maximum ultimate tensile strength was obtained in Al-2.25% Fe alloy which was unidirectionally solidified at the solidification rate of 20 mm/min. The metastable $Al-Al_6Fe$ phase was transferred into stable $Al-Al_3Fe$ phase at $600^{\circ}C$ held for 150 hours.
