  • This work reports a set of approximate analytical solutions describing the initial transient process of close-contact melting between a rectangular parallelepiped solid and a flat plate on which either constant temperature or constant heat flux is imposed. Not only relative motion of the solid block tangential to the heating plate, but also the density difference between the solid and liquid phase is incorporated in the model. The thin film approximation reduces the force balance between the solid weight and liquid pressure, and the energy balance at the melting front into a simultaneous ordinary differential equation system. The normalized model equations admit compactly expressed analytical solutions which include the already approved two-dimensional solutions as a subset. In particular, the normalized liquid film thickness is independent of all pertinent parameters, thereby facilitating to define the transition period of close-contact melting. A unique behavior of the solid descending velocity due to the density difference is also resolved by the present solution. A new geometric function which alone represents the three-dimensional effect is introduced, and its properties are clarified. One of the representative results is that heat transfer is at least enhanced at the expense of the increase in friction as the cross-sectional shape deviates from the square under the same contact area.

  • The structural, piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of $(1-x)(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ x=0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.10) ceramics were investigated. A gradual change in the crystal and microstructures with tile increase of $BaTiO_3$ (BT) concentration was observed. The $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ (BNT) samples show unusual properties as ferroelectric relaxer materials. We observed a phase transition in BNT solid solutions with BT having normal ferroelectric phase transition. At room temperature, BNT presents a single phase without the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). In the case of samples doped with $4\~8 mol\%$ BT, rhombohedral-tetragonal MPB was formed and the piezoelectric properties were improved.

  • In the system of Li2O-MgO-Al2O3-Cr2O3, the crystalline solid solution of LiCrO2 along the pseudo-binary join between rocksalt structure(LiCrO2) and spinel structure(MgCr2O4 or MgAl2O4) have been investigated by x-ray diffraction techniques. In this study, order-disorder phase transition of LiCrO2 was observed and the unit cell of the disordered LiCrO2 structure has been established. It has been found that LiCrO2 makes a solid solution over a wide range with MgAl2O4, while not with MgCr2O4. This difference was explained as being due to the ability of oxygen lattice distortion which depended on the relative sizes and chemical bonding characteristics of the substituted ions.

  • Amorphous silicon films of large area have been crystallized by a line shape excimer laser beam of one dimensional scanning with a gaussian profile in the scanning direction. In order to characterize the crystalline phase transition of thickness variables in excimer laser annealing(ELA), angle wrapping method was used. And also to characterize the residual stresses of crystalline phase transition in the case of angle wrapped-crystalline silicon on corning 7059 glass, polarized raman spectroscopies were measured at various laser energy density and substrate temperature. The residual stress varies from $9.0{\times}10^9$ to $9.9{\times}10^9$, and from $9.9{\times}10^9$ to $1.2{\times}10^10$dyne/${cm}^2$ of the substrate temperature at room temperature and varies from $8.1{\times}10^9$ to $9.0{\times}10^9$, and from $9.0{\times}10^9$ to $9.9{\times}10^9$dyne/${cm}^2$ of the substrate temperature at $400^{\circ}C$ as a function of direction from surface to substrate. According to the direction from the surface in liquid phase to the interface and from the interface to near the substrate in solid phase of recrystallized Si thin film, respectively. Thus, the stress is increased from(Liquid phase to solid phase) with phase transition.

  • $Zn_xSr_{1-x}S$ thin films were prepared in the whole composition range by rf sputtering, using powder targets of a mixture of ZnS and SrS with the required mole fraction. The possibility of existence of $Zn_xSr_{1-x}S$ solid solutions was systematically investigated from the results of thin film growth, in terms of structural, optical characteristics and the chemical bonding of the constituent atoms. The XRD, XPS and optical results made it clear that the solid solutions with a single-phased zincblende structure and a single-phased rocksalt structure were formed at $0.86~0.93{\leq}x{\leq}1\;and\;0{\leq}x{\leq}0.29$, respectively. The miscibility gap, including phase separation regions was found to exist in $0.3{\leq}x{\leq}0.86~0.91$, in which lattice constants, binding energy and absorption edges kept almost constant by the same values as those at border compositions. The experimental results on phase transition agreed well with the fraction of ionic character fi based on the Phillips' dielectric theory.

  • A Lennard-Jones fluid layer adsorbed on a smooth solid surface was studied at coverages $\theta$ ~ 0.8 to 1.8 on an isotherm by performing intensive grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The results clearly show a picture of two-step melting process which used to be observed in recent thermodynamic measurements of argon monolayer melting on graphite. The observed melting process consist of an abrupt density change followed by a gradual transition. Snapshots of monolayer configurations indicate that the creation and dissociation of a dislocation pair are involved in the melting mechanism. Taking the effect of system size into account, it is suggested that, while the abrupt density change may be not related to the theory of Kosterlitz, Thouless, Halperin, Nelson, and Young (KTHNY), the second gradual transition is probably a KTHNY-type melting transition.
