A bench-scale submerged-type membrane filtration system (SMFS) was constructed to study a feasibility of membrane filtration for solid-liquid separation in water and wastewater treatment processes. In the case of applying the SMFS to a biological wastewater treatment process, so-called membrane bioreactor, aeration underneath membrane modules is usually employed in order to provide oxygen demand for microbial growth as well as to control membrane fouling. A study was investigated the effects of operation parameters by aeration intensity, feed concentration, foulant type and airlift pore size on critical flux. Critical flux tends to increase with aeration rate. Optimal aeration flow rate was found to be 10 L/min/module. Feed concentration and foulant type has a significant effect on membrane fouling and filtration performance. But downward position and pore size of airlift has no a significant effects on membrane fouling and filtration performance.
The aim of this study was to produce Aminotosan$^{(R)}$ fertilizer using optimized chitosan coagulant from waste livestock blood. Amino-acid fertilizer was produced by pretreated livestock blood. Chitosan coagulant was aggregated with amino-acid fertilizer to produce Aminotosan$^{(R)}$. Optimized coagulation conditions were set using chitosan coagulant such as 10% citric acid and 500 ppm chitosan coagulant by analysis of CST and TTF. The efficiency of coagulation by chitosan coagulant under the optimal conditions was better than chemical coagulants. After solid/liquid separation for coagulated amino-acid fertilizer, Aminotosan$^{(R)}$ fertilizer which added eco-friendly and aesthetic functions was produced.

Objective: Due to rapid economic return, mixed crop-swine farming systems in Korea have become more intensive. Intensive farming practices often cause nutrient surpluses and lead to environmental pollution. Nutrient budgets can be used to evaluate the environmental impact and as a regulatory policy instrument for nutrient management. This study was conducted to select a nutrient budgeting approach applicable to the mixed crop-swine farms in Korea and suggest an effective manure treatment method to reduce on-farm nutrient production. Methods: In this study, we compared current and ideal gross nutrient balance (GNB) approaches of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and soil system budget (SSB) approach with reference to on-farm manure treatment processes. Data obtained from farm census and published literature were used to develop the farm nutrient budgets. Results: The average nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) surpluses were approximately 11 times and over 7 times respectively higher in the GNB approaches than the SSB. After solid-liquid separation of manure, during liquid composting a change in aeration method from intermittent to continuous reduced the N and P loading about 50% and 47%, respectively. Although changing in solid composting method from turning only to turning+aeration improved the N removal efficiency by 30.5%, not much improvement in P removal efficiency was observed. Conclusion: Although the GNB approaches depict the impact of nutrients produced in the mixed crop-swine farms on the overall agricultural environment, the SSB approach shows the partitioning among different nutrient loss pathways and storage of nutrients within the soil system; thus, can help design sustainable nutrient management plans for the mixed cropswine farms. The study also suggests that continuous aeration for liquid composting and turning+aeration for solid composting can reduce nutrient loading to the soil.
Quality of fresh ginger deteriorates rapidly during low temperature storage, and its storage life is short due to sprouting and microbial spoilage. The objectives of this research were to develop, using additives, a minced ginger product, which could maintain acceptable quality for over 30 days, and to investigate its quality changes during the cold storage. Storage stability of minced ginger product was investigated from the standpoint of the inhibition of brown discoloration, gas formation and liquid-solid separation. Fresh ginger was peeled and ground to produce minced ginger (control). Sodium bisulfite, L-cysteine, NaCl, sodium benzoate, modified starch, and/or xanthan gum were added to the control to minimize quality loss during storage, and to develop an optimum formula (A) of minced ginger. Samples were packed in Nylon/PE films, stored at $5^{\circ}C$, sampled at a 30-day interval, and subjected to quality evaluations. Changes in pH, surface color, gas formation, liquid-solid separation, contents of free amino acids, free sugars, organic acids, and fatty acids were determined. Gas formation was effectively inhibited in samples with sodium benzoate and/or NaCl. Samples with xanthan gum did not result in liquid-solid separation. L-Cysteine and sodium bisulfite were effective in controlling discoloration. pH decreased during storage in all samples, except sample A. Organic acid contents of all samples increased during storage, with lactic acid content showing the highest increase. Free amino acid content decreased with increasing storage time. Free sugar content of all samples decreased during storage. Sensory results showed sample A maintained acceptable quality until 90 days of storage. These results suggest that quality of minced ginger could be successfully maintained with the additions of selected additives for up to 90 days.
An environmentally friendly, so-called green, high performance liquid chromatography method was developed and validated for the determination of trans, trans-muconic acid (t,t-MA) in human urine as a biomarker of benzene exposure. After urinary t,t-MA was extracted and enriched using solid-phase extraction, a MF-Ph1 SG80 ($150mm{\times}2.0mm$ I.D., 5 ${\mu}m$) column with a mobile phase of 10 mM $KH_2PO_4$ containing 0.1% $H_3PO_4$ was used for isocratic separation of t,t-MA with UV detection at 259 nm. The calibration curve was constructed in the range of 0.1-5.0 mg/L with good linearity ($r^2$=0.9992). The intra-day and inter-day precision (as RSD) were 0.9-8.5% and 3.1-4.5%, respectively. The average recovery ranged from 97.5% to 101.7%. The green sample preparation and separation with no organic solvents were successfully achieved. The validated method would be suitable for the routine biological monitoring of benzene exposure in the occupational settings.
Carbaryl and seven organophosphorous pesticides were analyzed simultaneously using on-line solid phase extraction (on-line SPE) coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The target pesticides are Carbaryl, Methyl demeton, Fenitrothion, Malathion, Parathion, Phenthoate, Diazinon, and EPN. This method includes the direct injection of $500{\mu}L$ in the water sample, a 15 min separation period using a rapid resolution liquid chromatography system with on-line SPE, and detection through electrospray ionization (ESI) positive mode. The percentage of recovery of all pesticides ranged from 85.3 % to 100 %. This method showed an accuracy of ${\geq}90.0%$, possessing limits of detection and quantification within 0.05 to $0.28{\mu}g/L$ and 0.16 to $0.89{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The correlation coefficients (r) for the calibration curves within a range of 0.5 to $8.0{\mu}g/L$ were higher than 0.99. The evaluation results showed the efficacy of the method for all contents, and no pesticides were detected in the water quality sample.
This paper describes the changes of characteristics of pig slurry according to storing depth. Most of the substances containing pollutants, such as were Management of manure and wastewater from animal confinement facilities is a critical factor for pollution control. With proper treatment processing method in both solid and liquid forms, it can be used as a fertilizer and soil conditioner. In Korea, liquid-manure handling system is very popular because its treatment and application is easy and labor saving. In the storage tank treatment, the period of fermentation process and solids-liquid separation averages six months and the supernatant liquid is being used as a fertilizer. In this study, the changes in chemical characteristics of pig slurry at varying depths of the storage tank were investigated. Results showed that the pH value of the fermented pig slurry was > 7, while the major pollutants such as BOD, SS, N and P were highest in the bottom of the tank. Therefore, the above findings proved that varying depths in the storage tank can influence the concentration of pollutants of the fermented pig slurry.
It is required to propose an alternatives for appropriate sludge treatment owing to persistent construction of sewage treatment plant and increase of sewage sludge quantity. In order to treat sludge more efficiently, the methods which reduce the cost of sludge treatment have been studied such as sludge reduction and conditioning. Especially ozone treatment reduces solid quantity and improves separation of solid-liquid at the same time. Therefore ozone treatment have a positive effect on reduction and stabilization of sludge. So, this study applied ozone to sewage sludge and induced cell destruction of sludge. By comparing with the correlation between thickening and dewatering, and evaluating moisture content and solubilization of cake, this study verificates the effect of process improvement for ozone pre-treatment. In J-STP case, according to ozone dose solid flux increased about 12 times from $1kg/m^2{\cdot}h$ to $12kg/m^2{\cdot}h$. Also this plant were capable to shorten thickening time from 40 minutes to 6~7 minutes. Thus it is expected to reduce volume and retention time of thickener. On pH effect factor, dewatering at pH4 was more than at pH11, $3.05{\times}10^{11}$ and $3.82{\times}10^{11}(m/kg)$. But effect of pH was analogous to ozone, $2.81{\times}10^{11}(m/kg)$. The effect of pH on thickening was similar to law sludge, $0.68(kg/m^2{\cdot}h)$, and the effect of ozone injection on thickening was the biggest, $3.45(kg/m^2{\cdot}h)$. The COD solubilization rate improved from about 5 to 30%. So it is judged that we are able to utilize most solubilized sludge to another sewage treatment plants.
