Effects of gas injectino on the copper recovery form industrial waste water in a fluidized-bed electrolytic reactor were investigated. Effects of gas injection on the individual phase holdup and efficiency of copper recovery for given operating variables such as liquid and gas velocity (0.1~0.4 cm/s), current density ($2.0{\sim}3.5A/dm^2$) and amount of fluidized solid particles (1.0~4.0 wt%) were examined. The solid particle, whose diameter and swelling density were 0.5 mm and $1100kg/m^3$, respectively, was made of polystylene and divinyl benzene. It was found that the holdup of gas and solid phases increased, but that of the liquid phase decreased with increasing velocity of gas injected into the reactor. With increasing gas and/or liquid velocity and increasing amount of fluidized particles is not needed, the rate of copper recovery increased to a maximum value of and subsequently decreased. The recovery rate of copper increased almost linearly with increasing current density in accordance with Faraday's law.

In this study, sludge waste which has a difficulty in treating it was used to manufacture a fiber type of biosorbent. To solve the problems such as the release of organic pollutants and the difficulty in separating solid from treated water, entrapment method using Ca-alginate was used to immobilize sludge waste. Considering ease of manufacture as well as improvement of adsorptive ability, the biosorbent was manufactured in the form of fiber type. Optimum immobilization condition for minimizing the amount of alginate used and maximizing the performance of biosorbent was determined to be 10 g/L alginate concentration, 40 g/L sludge concentration, and 0.3-0.4 mm fiber diameter. The maximum Cd(II) uptake of the biosorbent was 60.73 mg/g. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model adequately described the dynamic and equilibrium behaviors of Cd(II) biosorption onto the biosorbent, respectively. In conclusion, sludge waste generated from wastewater treatment process is a cheap raw material for the manufacture of biosorbent which can be used to remove toxic heavy metals from industrial wastewaters efficiently.
Since 1960's along with industrialization and urbanization, economic growth has been . achieved, however, at the same time, environmental condition has been seriously deteriorated. . Currently, volume of wastewater has been increasing at annual rate of 7% in sewage and 20% in industrial wastewater. However, the nation's sewage treatment serves only 33% of the municipal wastewater as of 1991. Major portion of air pollutants comes from combustion of oil and coal which comprise 81% of total energy use and emission gases from motor vehicles increasing at an accelerated rate. It is known that Korea generates the highest amount of waste per capta. Nevertheless, it is not sufficient to reduce the volume of waste by means of resources recovery and recycling. Recognizing the importance of global environmental problems such as ozone layer depletion, global warming and acid rain, international society has been making various efforts since the 1972 Stockholm conference. In particular, it is expected that the Rio conference which has adopted the Rio declaration and Agenda 21 will form a crucial turning point of the emerging new world order after the Cold War confrontation. To cope with such issues as domestic pollution and global environmental problems, the fundamental national policy aims at harmonizing "environmental protection and sustainable development". The Ministry of Environment has recently set up a mid-term comprehensive plan which includes annual targets for environmental protection. According to the government plan, gradual improvement of various environmental conditions and specific measures to achieve them is planned in time frame. Additional sewage treatment plants will be constructed in urban areas with the target to treat 65% of the nation's municipal sewage by 1996. Supply of clean fuels such as LNG will also be expanded starting from large cities as a cleaner substitute energy for coal and oil. In parallel with expansion of LNG, emphasis will be placed on installation of stack monitoring system. Due to the relatively limited land, government's basic policy for solid waste treatment is to develop large scale landfill facilities rather than small sized ones. Thirty three regional areas have been designated for the purpose of waste management. For each of these regions, big scale landfill site is going to be developed. To increase the rate of waste recycling the government is planning to reinforce separate collection system and to provide industries with economic incentives. As a part of meeting the changing situation on global environmental problems after UNCED, and accommodation regulatory measures stipulated in the global environmental conventions and protocols, national policy will try to alter industrial and economic structure so as to mitigate the increasing trends of energy consumption, by encouraging energy conservation and efficiency. In this regard, more attention will be given to the policy on the development of the cleaner technology. Ultimately, these policies and programs will contribute greatly to improving the current state of national public health.
Plastic product is increasing by the growth of its demand and most of refused plastics are incinerated or reclaimed. However, the refused plastic is not easily decomposed and has the environmental problem with its various toxic gas in case of incineration. Therefore, many countries such as USA, Japan, Germany and other developed industrial countries as well as Korea are interested in studying the recyclable resource of refused plastic. The macromolecular waste pyrolysis has the advantage of collecting of raw materials in high price and can at least get fuel gas or oil with high heat capacity. It also discharges low waste gas and low toxic gas including SOx, NOx and HCl heavy metals. However, pyrolyzed oil includes enough excess unsaturated hydrocarbons to form tar, which can cause the nozzle of engines to plug when pyrolyzed oil is used as fuel. Activated carbon was proven to have prominent adsorption capability among the other adsorbents that were mainly composed of carbon. This study examined the possibility of application in activated charcoal of its solid formation by analysing the feature of pyrolysis which is one of the chemical recycling methods and getting chemical analysis of the product and activated energy. Analyze the element of the oil produced by pyrolysis using GC-MS. The experiment of tar adsorption using fly-ash showed that fly-ash improved the optical intensity of pyrolyzed oil and decreased oxygen compounds in the pyrolyzed oil.

Fast infrastructure development boosts the demand for shotcrete. Despite sand and stone being the most common coarse and fine aggregates for shotcrete, excessive exploration of these materials challenges the ecological environment. This study utilized an industrial solid waste, high-titanium heavy slag, blended with steel fibers to form Wet Shotcrete of Steel Fiber-reinforced High-Titanium Heavy Slag (WSSFHTHS). It investigated its workability, shotcrete performance and mechanical properties under different water-to-cement ratios, fly ash content, superplasticizer dosage, and steel fiber content. The tunnel excavation and support were investigated by conducting finite element numerical simulation analysis and was used in 3 tunnel lining pipes in Zhonggouwan tailing pond. The major findings are as follows: (1) The water-to-cement ratio (w/c ratio) significantly impacted the compressive strength of WSSFHTHS. The highest 28-day compressive strength of 60 MPa was achieved when the w/c ratio was 0.38; (2) Adding fly ash improved the workability and shotcrete performance and strength development of WSSFHTHS. The best anti-permeability performance was achieved when the fly ash constituted 15%, with the lowest permeability coefficient of 4.596 × 10-11 cm/s; (3) The optimum superplasticizer dosage for WSSFHTHS is 0.8%. It provided the best workability and shotcrete performance. Excessive dosage resulted in water bleeding and poor aggregate encapsulation, while insufficient dosage decreased flowability and adversely affected shotcrete performance; (4) The dosage of steel fibers significantly impacted the flexural and tensile strength of WSSFHTHS. When the steel fiber dosage was 45 kg/m3, the 28-day flexural and tensile strengths were 8.95 MPa and 6.15 MPa, respectively; (5) By integrating existing shotcrete techniques, the optimal lining thickness was 80 mm for WSSFHTHS per simulation. The results revealed that after using WSSFHTHS, the displacement of the tunnel surrounding the rock significantly improved, with no cracks or hollows, similar to the simulation results.

We developed new composites by combining the solid waste from Low-Density Polyethylene in the form of plastic bag (PB) and biomass from rice husk (RH),in the form of $(RH)_x(PB)_{1-x}$ (x = (1, 0.9, 0.7, 0.5)), as alternative fuels for electrical energy sources, and for providing the best solution to reduce environmental pollution. Elemental compositions were obtained by using proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and the thermal characteristics were obtained from thermogravimetric analysis. The compositions of carbon and hydrogen from the ultimate analysis show significant increases of 20-30% with increasing PB in the composite. The activation energy for RH is 101.22 kJ/mol; for x = 0.9 and 0.7, this increases by 4 and 6 magnitude, respectively, and for x = 0.5, shows remarkable increase to 165.30 kJ/mol. The range of temperature of about $480-660^{\circ}C$ is required for combustion of the composites $(RH)_x(PB)_{1-x}$ (x = (1, 0.9, 0.7, 0.5)) to perform the complete combustion process and produce high energy. In addition, the calorific value was determined by using bomb calorimetry, and shows value for RH of 13.44 MJ/kg, which increases about 30-40% with increasing PB content, indicating that PB has a strong effect of increasing the energy realized to generate electricity.
Biochar is the carbon solid produced through the pyrolysis of a biomass from organic sources such as agricultural waste, animal manure, and sludge under limited or anaerobic conditions. Biochar has the effect of reducing greenhouse gases through the carbon sequestration method; additionally, biochar is known to function as a soil amendment. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the application of biochar on the growth characteristics of Chinese cabbage at Chungnam National University in Daejeon, Korea. The Chinese cabbage was grown for 50 days in a glasshouse in pots. A pruning branch was used to produce the bead and pellet forms of biochar through pyrolysis. The biochar was added to the soil at 0, 2, and 5% by weight. The Chinese cabbage with the 2% treatment of the bead form of biochar had the highest fresh weight ($149.43{\pm}15.92g\;plant^{-1}$) which was increased by 10% compared to the control ($136.91{\pm}31.46g\;plant^{-1}$). Moreover, for the 5% treatment of the bead form of biochar ($60.91{\pm}9.82g\;plant^{-1}$), the growth decreased by 57% compared to the control. As the content of the bead form of biochar increased, the shoot dry weight, leaf number, leaf length and lead width that appeared decreased. An increase in the total organic matter, Avail. $P_2O_5$, Ex. cation and EC was observed when the biochar content was increased. Our results support the application of 2% biochar in the bead form for increased growth of Chinese cabbage.

This study was performed to determine the best fermentation soil in vanishing composting of individual residence garbage. At the result, temperature, weight, water content, volatile solid were reduced gradually by reaction of microorganism in the reactors after food was inserted for 9 days. The vanishing possibility was observed in all reactors. The best reactor was F and 4 that seeded microorganisms which were provided at S University. In addition it was possible to shorten cycle of putting in food waste. Inactivated reactors will be bad because of increased water content for long reaction time. Sodium chloride was accumulated and not vanished as time passed. But reactor was not insulated, the activities of microorganism in the reactor were affected highly by cold weather(about less than $12^{\circ}C$). When the study was extended to find out the feasibility of application, the retention time could be shortened to 3days form 9 days, when the microorganism reactor that used the fermentation soil seeded microorganisms which were provided at S University was maintained about $20^{\circ}C$.
When the waste solid fuel (SRF, Bio-SRF) is burnt in a boiler, a problem occurs in the combustion process involving the alkali components (Na, K) contained in large amounts in the fuel. The alkaline component has a low melting point, which usually forms low melting point salt in the temperature of the furnace, with the resulting low melting point salts attaching to the heat pipe to form a clinker. Various additives are used to suppress clinker generation, and the additive based on the kaolinite has alkali-aluminum-silica to inhibit the clinker. In this study, the reactivity of the additives based on the kaolinite was compared. The additives utilized were R-kaolinite, B-kaolinite, and A-kaolinite. Also silica and MgO were sourced as the comparison group. The experimental group was employed as a laboratory-scale batch horizontal reactor. The additive and alkaline salts were reacted at a weight ratio of 1 : 1, and the reaction temperature was performed at 900 ℃ for 10 hours. The first measurement of HCl occurring during the experiment was performed 30 minutes after the detection tube was used, and the process was repeated every hour after the experiment. After the reaction, solid residues were photographed for characterization analysis by means of an optical microscope. The reaction characteristics of the kaolinite were confirmed based on the analysis results.

This study investigated the removal of Sr, which was one of the high radioactive nuclides, by adsorption with Barium (Ba) impregnated 4A zeolite (BaA) from high-radioactive seawater waste (HSW). Adsorption of Sr by BaA (BaA-Sr), in the impregnated Ba concentration of above 20.2wt%, was decreased by increasing the impregnated Ba concentration, and the impregnated Ba concentration was suitable at 20.2wt%. The BaA-Sr adsorption was added to the co-precipitation of Sr with $BaSO_4$ precipitation in the adsorption of Sr by 4A (4A-Sr) within BaA. Thus, it was possible to remove Sr more than 99% at m/V (adsorbent weight/solution volume)=5 g/L for BaA and m/V >20 g/L for 4A, respectively, in the Sr concentration of less than 0.2 mg/L (actual concentration level of Sr in HSW). It shows that BaA-Sr adsorption is better than 4A-Sr adsorption in for the removal capacity of Sr per unit gram of adsorbent, and the reduction of the secondary solid waste generation (spent adsorbent etc.). Also, BaA-Sr adsorption was more excellent removal capacity of Sr in the seawater waste than distilled water. Therefore, it seems to be effective for the direct removal of Sr from HSW. On the other hand, the adsorption of Cs by BaA (BaA-Cs) was mainly performed by 4A within BaA. Accordingly, it seems to be little effect of impregnated Ba into BaA. Meanwhile, BaA-Sr adsorption kinetics could be expressed the pseudo-second order rate equation. By increasing the initial Sr concentrations and the ratios of V/m, the adsorption rate constants ($k_2$) were decreased, but the equilibrium adsorption capacities ($q_e$) were increasing. However, with increasing the temperature of solution, $k_2$ was conversely increased, and $q_e$ was decreased. The activation energy of BaA-Sr adsorption was 38 kJ/mol. Thus, the chemical adsorption seems to be dominant rather than physical adsorption, although it is not a chemisorption with strong bonding form.
