  • Recently, the number of anaerobic digestion facility for livestock manure is on the rise in Korea. All of the livestock manure anaerobic digestion facilities in operation use pig manure slurry as a substrate for anaerobic digestion. Generally, pig manure slurry is composed of 97% water and 3% solids. The particulate matter, such as corn in the form of particles that is undigested by pig is contained in the pig manure slurry. Particulate matter is a factor reducing the effectiveness of biogas production in the anaerobic digestion process. In this study, mechanical grinding treatment was applied to analyze the effect of methane production from pig manure slurry by reducing the particle size of the slurry. On the other hand, the effect of the solid concentration levels on methane production and methane content of the biogas was analyzed. The fine particle concentration in the pig manure slurry was increased by the mechanical grinding treatment. And methane production and methane content of the biogas were higher in grinded pig manure slurry than untreated raw slurry.

  • In this study, measurements of size-segregated particulate matter (PM) emitted from the combustion of rice straw, pine needles, and sesame stem were conducted in a laboratory chamber. The collected samples were used to analyze amounts of organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), humic-like substances (HULIS), and ionic species. The light absorption properties of size-resolved water extracts were measured using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. A solid-phase extraction method was first used to separate the size-resolved HULIS fraction, which was then quantified by a total organic carbon analyzer. The results show that regardless of particle cut sizes, the contributions of size-resolved HULIS ($=1.94{\times}HULIS-C$) to PM size fractions ($PM_{0.32}$, $PM_{0.55}$, $PM_{1.0}$, and $PM_{1.8}$) were similar, accounting for 25.2-27.6, 15.2-22.4 and 28.2-28.7% for rice straw, pine needle, and sesame stem smoke samples, respectively. The $PM_{1.8}$ fraction revealed WSOC/OC and HULIS-C/WSOC ratios of 0.51 and 0.60, 0.44 and 0.40, and 0.50 and 0.60 for the rice straw, pine needle, and sesame stem burning emissions, respectively. Strong absorption with decreasing wavelength was found by the water extracts from size-resolved biomass burning aerosols. The absorption ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m $ exponent values of the size-resolved water extracts fitted between 300 and 400 nm wavelengths for particle sizes of $0.32-1.0{\mu}m$ were 6.6-7.7 for the rice straw burning samples, and 7.5-8.0 for the sesame stem burning samples. The average mass absorption efficiencies of size-resolved WSOC and HULIS-C at 365 nm were 1.09 (range: 0.89-1.61) and 1.82 (range: 1.33-2.06) $m^2/g{\cdot}C$ for rice straw smoke aerosols, and 1.13 (range: 0.85-1.52) and 1.83 (range: 1.44-2.05) $m^2/g{\cdot}C$ for sesame stem smoke aerosols, respectively. The light absorption of size-resolved water extracts measured at 365 nm showed strong correlations with WSOC and HULIS-C concentrations ($R^2=0.89-0.93$), indicating significant contribution of HULIS component from biomass burning emissions to the light absorption of ambient aerosols.

  • Temperature-phased anaerobic digestion (TPAD), anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), and co-digestion technologies were combined together in order to overcome low efficiencies of conventional anaerobic sewage sludge digestion processes. In the performance, TPAD-ASBR process showed high VS removal efficiency over 60% up to the organic loading rate (OLR) of 2.7 g VS/L/d. The first-stage of TPAD-ASBR and control system played a most significant role in VS destruction and methane production. Methane production rate (0.79 l $CH_4/L/d$) of the system was higher than that (0.59 l $CH_4/L/d$) of the control system. The substrate characteristics of the sewage sludge, such as low VS concentration (1.5%, w/w) and biodegradability, were properly improved by the addition of food waste as a co-substrate, leading to more efficient VS removal and methane production. With several track studies, it was revealed that the independent solid retention time (SRT) of those systems prevented untreated particles from outflowing and also, extended the retention time of the active biomass for further degradation. Consequently, it was confirmed that the sequencing batch operation of the TPAD process using co-substrate was a promising alternative for the recycling of sewage sludge with low VS content.

  • Hydrocarbon compounds in vadose zone soils caused by adsorption onto the surfaces of solid particles are generally considered to show retardation effect. In this study, we investigated the retardation effect on the transport of Benzene in a sandy soil by conducting batch and column tests. The batch test was conducted by equilibrating dry soil mass with Benzene solutions of various initial concentrations. and by analyzing the concentrations of Benzene in initial and equilibrated solutions using HPLC. The column test consisted of monitoring the concentrations of effluent versus time known as a breakthrough curve (BTC). We used KCl and Benzene solutions with the concentration of 10 g/L and 0.88 g/L as a tracer, and injected them into the inlet boundary of the soil sample as a square pulse type respectively, and monitored the effluent concentrations at the exit boundary under a steady state condition using an EC-meter and HPLC. From the batch test, we obtained a distribution coefficient assuming that a linear adsorption isotherm exists and calculated the retardation factor based on the bulk density and porosity of the column sample. We also predicted the column BTC curve using the retardation factor obtained from the distribution coefficient and compared with the measured BTC of Benzene. The results of the column test showed that i) the peak concentration of Benzene was much smaller than that of KCl and ⅱ) the travel times of peak concentrations for the two tracers were more or less identical. These results indicate that adsorption of Benzene onto the sand panicles occurred during the pulse propagation but the retardation of Benzene caused by adsorption was not present in the studied soil. Comparison of the predicted with the measured BTC of Benzene resulted in a poor agreement due to the absence of the retardation phenomenon. The only way to describe the absolute decrease of Benzene concentration in the column leaching experiment was to introduce a decay or sink coefficient in the convection-dispersion equation (CDE) model to account for an irreversible sorption of Benzene in the aqueous phase.

  • The microstructures and the creep rupture properties of dissimilar welds between the Ni-based superalloy Inconel 740H and the non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel TP316H have been characterized. The welds were produced by shielded metal arc (SMA) welding process with the AWS A5.11 Class ENiCrFe-3 filler metal, commonly known as Inconel 182 superalloy. Postweld heat treatment at $760^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours was conducted to form ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ strengthener in Inconel 740H. The austenitic weld metal produced by Inconel 182 had a dendritic microstructure, and grew epitaxially from the both sides of Inconel 740H and TP316H base metals. Since both Inconel 740H and TP316H did not undergo any solid-state transformation during welding process, there were no heat-affected-zone (HAZ) sub-regions and the coarsoned grains near the weld interface were limited to a narrow region. The hardness of Inconel 182 weld metal was ~220 Hv. The gradual hardness decrease was detected at HAZ of TP316H, and the TP316H base metal displayed the lowest hardness value (~180 Hv) whilst the Inconel 740H showed the highest hardness value (~400 Hv). Fracture after creep occurred at the center of weld metal, regardless of creep condition. It was found that during creep the cracks initiated and propagated along interdendritic regions and grain boundaries at which Laves particles enriched in Nb, Si and Cr were present. The appropriate design of weld metal was discussed to suppress the creep-induced cracking of the present dissimilar weld.

  • This study aimed to investigate the hexachlorobenzene (HCB) dechlorinating ability of sediment microbes collected from a natural canal receiving secondary effluents from an industrial estate and nearby factories. Nine sites along the stream and one in the estuary in the Gulf of Thailand into which the canal spills were specified and sampling for sediment and water. Preliminary analysis of the sediments showed that the first four sites nearest to the discharging location were contaminated by HCB within the range of 0.18 to 1.25 ppm. Apart from that, 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene which has never been commercially produced or used in any manufacturing processes except for the transformation from higher chlorinated benzene was also identified in the range of 0.16 to 0.24 ppm. This suggested a possibility of sporadically HCB contamination in this stream. Of more important, people in the community along this canal earn their living by coastal fishery; hence, posing a risk of spreading HCB and its less chlorinated congeners via food chain from caught marine creatures to human. As a result, there is an urgent need to understand the behavior of HCB dechlorination in this stream sediment which can lead to a clean-up action in the future. Serum bottles with sediment slurries (sediment to water ratio of 1:1 (v/v) and filtered to remove particles larger than 0.7 mm) from each site were inoculated with 2 mg/l of HCB, kept anaerobically in the dark at room temperature without any nourishment, and analyzed for HCB and its less-chlorinated congeners every 6 days. Total chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, and volatile suspended solids were in the range of 21,492-73,584, 158,100-518,100 and 6,000-32,700 mg/l, respectively. It was found that all sediment slurries began to dechlorinate HCB in 12 to 30 days and the HCB was completely removed within 42 to 60 days or so. On the other hand, there was no HCB dechlorination occurred in the controlled set which was sterilized by autoclaving prior to the addition of HCB. This implies that the HCB transformation was solely due to microorganisms' activities. HCB was dechlorinated principally via pentachlolobenzene to 1,2,3,5-tetrachlorobenzene and terminated at 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene which is the major pathway as reported by many researchers. Dichlorobenzene has not been detected in any samples within the dechlorination period of 60 days. The results indicate that the microbial matrix in the sediment of this stream has an outstanding capability to dechlorinate HCB. Existing substrates and nutrients which mainly sorbed onto the solid phase and the typical temperature in Thailand were sufficient and suitable to promote the activities of these HCB-dechlorinating microbes.

  • Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) is currently commonly used material for the reconstruction of bone defects and fixation of joint prosthetics following congenital and acquired causes. Although PMMA has widespread use, it does not possess the ideal mechanical characteristics with osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity required. In order to overcome these problem, addition of bovine bone drived defatting demineralized bone(BDB) powders to a PMMA bone cement was done for improvement of physical property and bone forming characteristics of composite. In order to investigate the influence of BDB reinforcement on the PMMA, we measured physical property of compressive, tensile, flexural strength, and scanning electron microscopic examinations. The results were obtained as follows: 1. The PMMA forms a solid cellular matrix with open cells about $100{\mu}m$ in variable size and incorporating BDB. BDB aggregates inside the cells form a porous network that is accessible from the outer surface. 2. The physical properties were compressive strength of mean $22.74{\pm}1.69MPa$, tensile strength of mean $22.74{\pm}1.69MPa$, flexural strength of mean $77.53{\pm}6.93MPa$. Scanning electron microscopic examinations were revealed that there was DBD particles form a highly porous agglomerates. BDB can be added PMMA in the form of dried powders, the composites are applicable as bone substitutes. BDB and PMMA mixture is shown to produce a class of composites that due to their microstructure and improved mechanical properties may be suitable for application as bone subsitutes. The mechanical and material properties of the BDB-PMMA bone substitute composites are competitive with those properties of a porous ceramic matrix of other hydroxyapatite and with those of natural bones.

  • LiMn$_2$O$_4$ compounds were synthesized by calcining a mixture of LiOH and MnO$_2$(CMD) at 47$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 h and then calcining again at $650^{\circ}C$ to 90$0^{\circ}C$ fur 48 h in air with intermediate grinding. All the synthesized samples exhibited XRD patterns for the cubic spinel phase with a space group Fd3m. The lattice parameter increased gradually as the sintering temperature rose. The electrochemical cells were charged and discharged fur 20 cycles at a current density 300$\mu$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ between 3.5 V and 4.3 V. The voltage vs. discharge capacity curves for all the samples showed two plateaus. The LiMn$_2$O$_4$ sample calcined at 90$0^{\circ}C$ had the largest first discharge capacity. This sample exhibited the best crystallinity, had relatively large lattice parameter and had relatively large particles with rectatively homogeneous size. All the samples showed good cycling performances. Among all the samples, the LiMn$_2$O$_4$ calcined at 85$0^{\circ}C$ had relatively large first discharge capacity and very good cycling performance. The addition of excess LiOH and the mixing in ethanol considered to help the formation of the more LiMn$_2$O$_4$ phase per unit weight sample and the more stable LiMn$_2$O$_4$phase. These led to the larger discharge capacities and the better cycling performances. The cyclic voltammograms fur the second cycle of the LiMn$_2$O$_4$ samples showed the oxidation and reduction peaks around 4.05 V and 4.18 V and around 4.08 V and 3.94 V, respectively. The larger first discharge capacity of the sample calcined at the higher temperature is related to the larger lattice parameter.

  • With the depletion of high grade coal, it is indispensable to be used co-combustion of low rank coal with bituminous coal in pulverized coal-fired power plants. This study describes the detailed measurements of combustion characteristics of bituminous and subbituminous coal in a 0.7MWth pilot-scale test facility. This experimental works include the measurement of gas temperature, gas concentrations along with the reactor axial and radial distance at the condition of excess air ratio of 1.2. The solid sampling was carried out and analyzed with the combustion of bituminous coal. The main reaction zone of coal flame in a reactor was formed about 1 m from the swirl burner, and at downstream, the fully developed temperature and species distribution was observed. The sampled particles of bituminous coal in a reactor revealed the complete carbon burn-out was achieved just after an main combustion zone.

  • The red emission properties of $Bi^{3+}$ co-doped $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ prepared by the solid-state reaction was investigated, in order to verify its potential to act as the red emitting phosphor of white LEDs. The emission spectrum consisted of a weak band at 581, 587, 5931 and 599 nm, with maximum sharp peaks occurring at about 611 nm due to the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$, while the excitation spectrum exhibited a broad band between 290 and 430 mm with peaks occurring in the range of $310{\sim}390nm$. Also, SEM image of the sample containing 0.43 mol% $H_3BO_3$ and 2.08 mol% $BaCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$ phosphor particles grew to achieve diameters of $700{\sim}800nm$.
