This study was performed to investigate the characteristics and performance of model Decanter for separating swine wastewater to solid and liquid which is slurry state with 12.6% TS. Swine wastewater of the slurry tank was pumped into model Decanter which capacity was $2m^3$/hr in 10% TS Slurry inside of bowl was separated to solid-liquid by centrifugal acceleration. Sampling was done in the section of slurry feed pipe, supernatant outflow pipe, cake discharge pipe. After solid-liquid separation TS, $COD_cr$ and slurry volume reduction effect represented 38%, 40%, 19.6% respectively. Relation factor of model Decanter operation slurry concentration, optimum retention time of slurry, overflow velocity of supernatant, supernatant concentration, sludge removal rate etc. Optimal operation conditions can be set and evaluated efficiency based on the experimental results in the case of Decanter adopted for solid-liquid separation in highly concentrated swine wastewater.
Solid-liquid separation of swine wastewater was conducted using bentonite as coagulant. During the separation experiment, coagulation efficiency was also investigated. To determine optimal bentonite dose, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6% (w/v basis) of bentonite was dosed. Suspended solid removal efficiency was 87-98% at whole bentonite dosage. But sediment volume was increased, and settling velocity was decreased at excessive bentonite dosage. Therefore optimal bentonite dosage was evaluated around 0.2-0.4%. In the test to determine optimal pH, coagulation using bentonite was performed at pH 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. At lower pH suspended solid removal efficiency was increased. However, sediment volume was also increased and phosphorus release was observed. Thereby optimal pH for bentonite coagulation might be appeared in the range of 6-7.
The separation performances for thirty different dimensions of a low-pressure hydrocyclone (LPH) were tested in order to obtain an optimum dimension scale for fecal solid removal from an aquaculture system. The geometric variables were considered on two inlet diameters (Di: 30 and 50 mm), five overflow diameters (Do: 30, 50, 60, 70 and 100 mm), and three cylinder lengths (Lc: 250, 345 and 442 mm), while the cylinder diameter (Dc) of 335 mm, underflow diameter (Du) of 50 mm and cone angle (${\theta}$) of $68^{\circ}$ were kept constant. A small size for carp feces was regarded as the target for the removal of solids. Spherical polystyrene particles (1.1-1.3 mm dia., ${\rho}_s=1.05g/cm^3$), which demonstrate a similar settling velocity and specific gravity to the carp feces, were used as feed. The separation performance was tested in the range of 330 to 1200 ml/s of the inflow rate. Experimental results using ANCOVA and the Tukey test (${\alpha}=0.05$) demonstrated that the separation performances of LPH were significantly affected (P<0.05) by fi, Di and Do. In contrast, there was no significant Lc effect (P>0.05) on the separation performances. The maximum separation performance was detected at dimension combinations of 30 mm of inflow diameter (Di), 50, 60 and 70 mm of overflow diameter (Do), 345 mm of cylinder length (Lc). The dimension proportions were 0.09, 1.03, 0.15-0.21 and 0.15 (or Di/Dc, Lc/Dc, Do/Dc and Du/Dc, respectively.
By testing the separation performance for a fine settleable solid removal system in an aquaculture system using polystyrene particles as an experimental substitute, the optimal geometric dimensions for a Low-Pressure Hydrocyclone (LPH) were obtained. The design approach far the LPH took into consideration two inflow diameters (Di: 30, 50 mm), three overflow diameters (Do: 60, 70, 100 mm) and four cylinder lengths (Lc: 250, 345, 442, 575 mm), while the cylinder diameter (Dc) at 335 mm, the underflow diameter (Du) at 50 mm and the cone angle (${\theta}$) at $68^{\circ}$ were kept constant. The separation performances of 19 different dimension combinations of LPH were tested, ranging from 300 to 1200 ml/sec of inflow rate using substitute polystyrene particles (0.4-0.7 mm dia., ${\rho}_s=1.05g/cm^3$). These polystyrene particles exhibit a similar density and settling velocity to the fine fecal debris of the common carp. The total separation efficiency for the inflow rate ranged from a high of 97% to a low of 20%. Experimental results obtained by ANCOVA and the Tukey test (${\alpha}=0.05$) showed that the separation performances of the LPH were significantly affected (P<0.05) by the fi, Di, Do and Lc. The maximum separation performance was detected at a dimension combination of 30 mm of inflow diameter (Di), 60 mm of overflow diameter (Do), 442 and 575 mm of cylinder length (Lc). The dimension proportions were 0.09, 1.32-1.72, 0.18 and 0.15 for Di/Dc, Lc/Dc, Do/Dc and Du/Dc respectively.
Many plants have been improved to adapt the target of the biological treatment processes changed from organics to nutrients since the water quality criteria of effluent was reinforced and included T-N and T-P for the municipal wastewater treatment plant. To meet the criteria of T-N and T-P, the conventional biological reactor such as aeration tank in activated sludge system is changed to the BNR (biological nutrient removal) processes, which are typically divided into three units as anaerobic, anoxic and oxic tank. Therefore, the solid separation process should be redesigned to fit the BNR processes in case of the application of the DAF (dissolved air flotation) process as an alternatives because the solid-liquid separation characteristics of microbial flocs produced in the BNR processes are also different from that of activated sludge system as well. The results of this study revealed that the microbial floc of the anaerobic tank was the hardest to be separated among the three steps of the unit tanks for the BNR processes. On the contrary, the oxic tank was best for the removal efficiency of nutrients as well as suspended solid. In addition, the removal efficiency of nutrients was much improved under the chemical coagulation treatment though coagulation was not indispensable with a respect to the solid separation. On the other hand, in spited that the separation time for the microbial floc from the BNR processes were similar to the typical particles like clay flocs, over $2.32{\times}10^3$ ppm of air volume concentration was required to keep back the break-up of the bubble-floc agglomerates.
This study was carried out to reduce the problem during distillation process, which separate U, TRU (TRans Uranium) metal electro deposit, Cd and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt generating from LCC (Liquid Cadmium Cathode) electro winning process. The cadmium recovering apparatus was manufactured to separate for each metal using solid-liquid separation method. The apparatus consists of the first sieve for the separation of U and TRU metal electrodeposit, the second sieve for the separation of LiCl-KCl eutectic salt, cadmium collection basket, and a heating furnace. In addition, the size of each sieve is 2 mm to 3 mm. In this experiment, a metal wire was employed to replace TRU metal electrodeposit and U, which exist actually in a LCC crucible. In the solid state, The LiCl-KCl is separated at 340℃ at which the solid and the liquid of the remaining cadmium and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt coexists in each, after the metal wire separated at 500℃. As a result, it seems that it would be beneficial to set the processing condition in the distillation process with the additional treatment process of cadmium and LiCl-KCl eutectic salt.
Facilitated transport membranes for the separation of olefin/paraffin mixtures have long been of interest in separation membrane science because olefins, such as propylene and ethylene, which are important chemicals in petrochemical industries, are currently separated by energy-intensive cryogenic distillation processes. Recently, solid polymer electrolyte membranes containing silver ions have demonstrated remarkable performance in the separation of olefin/paraffin mixtures in the solid state and, thus, they can be considered as alternatives to cryogenic distillation. Here, we review recent progress, and critical issues affecting in the use of facilitated olefin transport membranes; in particular, we provide a general overview with reference to carrier properties, transport mechanisms, and separation performance.
