Despite a widely-held belief that the finite element method is the method for the solution of solid mechanics problems, which has for 30 years dissuaded solid mechanics scientists from paying any attention to the finite volume method, it is argued that finite volume methods can be a viable alternative. It is shown that it is simple to understand and implement, strongly conservative, memory efficient, and directly applicable to nonlinear problems. A number of examples are presented and, when available, comparison with finite element methods is made, showing that finite volume methods can be not only equal to, but outperform finite element methods for many applications.
The variable-node solid element with rotational degrees of freedom has been developed far efficient connection of transition zones and far connection of different types of elements with rotational degrees of freedom. In applying this new element to engineering problems, it is necessary to fine the relations between tractions and equivalent nodal farces. In this case, the equivalent forces in solid element with rotational degrees of freedom and ratational forces are a bit different from that af conventional solid elements. Some typical examples are presented.
In the FE analysis of sheet metal forming, efficient results can be obtained by using shell elements rather than using solid elements. However, shell elements have some limitations to describe three-dimensional material laws. In the recent years, solid-shell element, which has only translational degree of freedom like solid element, has been presented. The assumed nature strain (ANS) and enhanced assumed strain (EAS) methods can be used to remove several solid-shell locking problems. In this paper, ANS method was used for diminish transverse shear locking and EAS method for thickness locking. Using the element, the steel pipe making process from flat plate analyzed effectively, which is including bending and welding.
The eight-node 3D solid element is one of the most extensively used elements in computational mechanics. This is due to its simple shape and easy of discretization. However, due to the parasitic shear locking, it should not be used to simulate the behaviour of structural members in bending dominant conditions. Previous researches have indicated that the introduction of incompatible mode into the displacement field of the solid element could significantly reduce the shear locking phenomenon. In this study, an incompatible mode eight-node solid element, which considers both geometric and material nonlinearities, is developed for modelling of structural members at elevated temperatures. An algorithm is developed to extend the state determination procedure at ambient temperature to elevated temperatures overcoming initially converged stress locking when the external load is kept constant. Numerical studies show that this incompatible element is superior in terms of convergence, mesh insensitivity and reducing shear locking. It is also showed that the solid element model developed in this paper can be used to model structural behaviour at both ambient and elevated temperatures.
Various transition elements are generally used for the effective analysis of a complicated mechanical structure. In this paper, a solid-to-beam transition finite element which connects a continuum element and a $c^1-continuity$ beam element each other is proposed. The shape functions of the transition finite elements, which a 8-noded hexahedral solid element fur 3D analysis and a 4-noded quadrilateral plane element fur 2D analysis are connected to a Euler's beam element, are explicitely formulated. In order to show the effectiveness and convergence characteristics of the proposed transition elements. numerical tests are performed for various examples and their results are compared with those obtained by other methods. As the result of this study. following conclusions are obtained: (1)The proposed transition finite elements show the monotonic convergence characteristics because of having used the compatible displacement folds. (2)As being used the transition element in the finite element analysis, the finite element modelings are more convenient and the analysis results are more accurate because of the formulation characteristies of the Euler's beam element.
This is a leading study to replace the structural analysis methodology on the specific traditional joint by a numerical analysis. Tests were carried out to test the compressive methodologies with the numerical results. The Japanese larch was used as a sample. The Orthotropic property of wood was specifically considered for the finite element numerical analysis. Linear numerical analysis and non-linear numerical analysis for the BEAM element and the two SOLID elements of ANSYS were used to analyze the compressive performance. In addition, more finely divided elements were used to raise the accuracy of the numerical result. Finally, the statistically significant differences were tested between that of the analytical and numerical results. It could be concluded that the SOLID 64 element shows the most optimum result when the non-linear analysis with the more finely divided element was used. However, finely dividing of the element is a considerable time consuming process, and it is quite difficult to raise the accuracy of the non-linear numerical analysis. Therefore, if considering the vertical displacement to be of the only interest, the BEAM element is more efficient than the SOLID element because the BEAM element is reflected as a simple line, which is less time consuming and difficult in dividing the elements. But, the BEAM element cannot accurately model the knot as a strength defect factor which is an important property in the orthotropic property of wood. Therefore, the SOLID element should be used to model the strength defect factor, knot, as it can be efficiently applied on the structural size flexure member which could be more strongly effected by the knot. In addition, it is useful at times when the failure types of members are to be more closely investigated, as the SOLID element is able to examine the local stress distribution of the member. The conclusion drawn by this study is of the good concordance between analytical results and numerical results of compressive wood members, but how orthotropic properties should only be considered. The numerical analysis on the specific Korean traditional joints will be based on the current study results.
A new three-dimensional transition solid element was presented for the automated three-dimensional adaptive h-refinement or the local mesh refinement where the steep stress gradient exists. The proposed transition element was established by adding variable nodes(element nodes) to basic 8-node for an effective connection between the refined region and the coarse region with minimum degrees of freedom possible. To be consistent in accuracy with 8-node solid element with nonconforming modes, this transition element was also improved through the addition of the modified nonconforming modes. Numerical examples show that the performance of the element and the applicability to 3D adaptations are satisfactory.
It is the objective of this study to analyze the effect of various process variables on the quality of extruded product and extrusion force for semi-solid extrusion of Al2024 with solid phase structure of globular type by the finite element method. Process variables are initial solid fraction, ram speed, semi-angle of die, and reduction in area. The results of experiment are compared with those of simulation in order to verify the usefulness of the developed finite element program. The flow and deformation of semi-solid alloy are analyzed by coupling by coupling the deformation of porous skeleton and the flow of liquid phase. It is also assumed that initial solid fraction is homogeneous.
This paper is proposed to select the optimal finite element type in finite element analysis. Based on the NUREG reports, static analyses were performed using a commercial analysis program, $ABAQUS^{TM}$. In this study, we used a nonlinear kinematic hardening model proposed by Chaboche. The analysis result of solid elements by inputting the same material constants was different from the results of the NUREG report. This is resulted from the difference between shell element and solid element. Therefore, the material constants that have similar result to the experimental result were determined and compared according to element type. In case of using solid element for efficient finite element analysis, we confirmed that the use of C3D8I element type(incompatible mode 8-node linear brick element) leads the accurate result while reducing the analysis time.
This paper presents a new approach to simulate fluid-solid interaction problems involving non-matching interfaces. The coupling between fluid and solid domains with dissimilar finite element meshes consisting of 4-node quadrilateral elements is achieved by using the interface element method (IEM). Conditions of compatibility between fluid and solid meshes are satisfied exactly by introducing the interface elements defined on interfacing regions. Importantly, a consistent transfer of loads through matching interface element meshes guarantees the present method to be an efficient approach of the solution strategy to fluid-solid interaction problems. An arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description is adopted for the fluid domain, while for the solid domain an updated Lagrangian formulation is considered to accommodate finite deformations of an elastic structure. The stabilized equal order velocity-pressure elements for incompressible flows are used in the motion of fluids. Fully coupled equations are solved simultaneously in a single computational domain. Numerical results are presented for fluid-solid interaction problems involving nonmatching interfaces to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology.
