  • This is the first report of Brachirus annularis (Pleuronectiformes: Soleidae) from Korea. A specimen of B. annularis (229.0 mm standard length) was firstly collected by drift gill net at a fishing ground locating between Jejudo and Geomundo Islands, the southern coast of Korea on 31 March, 2019. This species was characterized by having five large, deep colored patches on the ocular side of body, each patch outlined by dark brown ring, united dorsal and anal fins jointed with caudal fin, and short pectoral fin. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean names, "Eol-luk-seo-dae-sok" and "Eol-luk-seo-dae" for the genus and species, respectively.

  • Three pleuronectiform fishes are redescribed based on specimens from southern sea of Korea. A single specimen (73.4 mm SL) of Samariscus japonicus of the family Samaridae is characterized by having no pectoral fin on blind side and 5 pectoral fin rays on ocular side of body. Twenty specimens (53.6~125.8 mm SL) of Plagiopsetta glossa of the same family are characterized by having 8~10 pectoral fin rays and 6 black ring-shaped blotches on ocular side of body. Three specimens (74.1~83.4 mm SL) of Aseraggodes kaianus of the family Soleidae are characterized by having blackish-brown reticulations on ocular side of body.

  • We examined the ovaries of 312 robust tonguefish (Cynoglossus robustus) collected each month from January to December 2001, off the coast of Yeosu, Korea. The samples were used to investigate robust tonguefish reproductive activity. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic indexindicated that spawning peaked between June and August. Fish size at first spawning was 15-19 cm total length (TL). Over $50{\%}$ of female fish 25-29 cm TL were sexually mature, and this rose to $100{\%}$ for female fish 35-39 cm TL. The tonguefish spawned four or more times during the spawning season. Most females commenced spawning in their second year. The relationship between total length (cm TL) and fecundity (F) was F=528646Ln(TL)-1E+06.

  • Age and growth of three-lined tonguefish (Cynoglossus abbreviatus) were studied using samples from the waters off Yosu, Korea, from June to December, 2001. Sagittal otoliths had relatively clear annuli. Each annulus was formed once a year in April. The peak of the gonadosomatic index occurred also in April. The oldest fish observed in this study was 5 years old for females and 4 years old for males. The relationship between the otolith radius (R) and total length (L) was as follows: L=14.921R-2.5318 for females and L=13.527R-0.5584 for males. The relationship between total length and body weight (W) was as follows: $W=0.0008L^{3.54}$ for females and $W=0.0029L^{3.14}$ for males. The growth in length of the fish was expressed by the von Bertalanffy's growth equation as: $$L_t=44.54(1-e^{-0.16(t+2.69)})\;for\;females\;and\;L_t=41.52(1-e^{-0.15(t+3.34)})\;for\;males$$.
