  • Solar energy is a potential source of power that offers much promise being used for low-temperature applications like drying farm crops, space heating, and water heating for domestic uses. Already much of it are being used for those purpose in foreign countries. However, very little research has been done to determine the possibility of using the solar energy in Korea. This study was conducted to develop the general prediction equation of the total radiation on a horizontal surface in Daejeon area based on 5 years 91972, Jun.1-1976. Dec.31) meteorological data (bright sunshine hours, average total horizontal radiation), and to obtain experimentally the thermal efficiency of solar air and water collectors, which will be used as a basic data of designing flat-plate solar collector system. In addition to the thermal efficiency of the collectorsthe relationship among those factors affecting it such as weather condition, orientation factor, and tilted angle of collector was analyzed. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The general predicted equation of the total radiation on a horizontal surface in Daejeon area based on bright sunshine hours was developed as $H_{av} =(1.546\frac{n}{N}-0.582)H_o$. Predicting the total radiation on a horizontal surface by the above equation was thought to be possible because to values of 0.882 was smaller than any t values at above 0.05 level on the basis of two tailed test of the difference between the calculated and the recorded values. 2.It was observed that optimum tilt angle of the collector in the summer and the autumn drying season was 13 degrees and 51 degrees respectively, these values could be obtained by adding or substracting approximately 25 degrees from the latitude of this area $(36.3^{\circ}N)$ .The relationship between orientation factor and declination of sun at suitable tilt angle of 33 degrees $(s=0.9\O)$ was shown at Fig.4. 3.The thermal efficiency of solar wdter collector was shown 13.4-51. 6% on Aug. 15 (the minimum radiation recorded) and 43.8 ~537% Aug.20 (the maximum radiation recorded), and 13.8~ 46.6 and 44.3~ 49.7 were shown on each corresponding day. 4.The thermal efficiency of the collectors according to the weather condition was shown a big difference of about 10% between the day of the maximum radiation recorded and the minimum, but the differen of efficiency between the air and the water collector was at most 2 ~ 3%. 5. Even if the efficiency of the solar water collector was a little higher than the solar air collector, for drying farm products, the solar air collector was thought to be more effective because the air heated by collector could be directly used for drying them.

  • Solar power generation system is a energy generation technology that produces electricity from solar power, and it is growing fastest among renewable energy technologies. It is of utmost importance that the solar power system supply energy to the load stably. However, due to unstable energy production due to weather and weather conditions, accurate prediction of energy production is needed. In this paper, an Artificial Neural Network(ANN) that predicts solar energy using 15 kinds of meteorological data such as precipitation, long and short wave radiation averages and temperature is implemented and its performance is evaluated. The ANN is constructed by adjusting hidden parameters and parameters such as penalty for preventing overfitting. In order to verify the accuracy and validity of the prediction model, we use Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) as performance indices. The experimental results show that MAPE = 19.54 and MAE = 2155345.10776 when Hidden Layer $Sizes=^{\prime}16{\times}10^{\prime}$.

  • In this research, the effect of a heating system, which is powered by direct solar energy accumulated in phase change material (PCM) as heat storage material installed on the floor surface, on the cooling load was studied. Cooling load of a test building designed for this research was measured with fan coil unit and factors affecting it were also estimated. Experiments were performed with and without PCM installed on the building floor to understand the effect of the PCM on the cooling load. Additionally, to confirm the experiments results, the prediction calculation formula by average outside temperature and integrated solar radiation was composed using multivariate regression model. The results suggested that the heating system with PCM on the floor surface has the potential to shift electric power peak by radiating heat, stored during the daytime in it, at night, not increasing the total cooling load much.

  • Purpose: Most modern office buildings adopt the curtain wall system in order to provide occupants with the sense of openness and high-technology, which requires large window area. As a result, the amount of solar radiation increases, negatively affecting cooling load during the summer and increasing energy costs. However, the performance of window itself is not sufficiently controllable parameter to control thermal comfort and solar radiation. Therefore, a shading device such as venetian blind is required to control them and thus a variety of studies have been performed thus far. So, the purpose of this study is to improve the performance of blind through the development of blind control algorithm. Method: Among various input variables for the control of venetian blinds, the vertical solar radiation has been selected in this study as the primary input variable and the optimal control algorithm for venetian blinds were developed for each window orientation. Result: The developed optimal control algorithm has a positive effect on building energy savings.

  • The temporal and spatial distributions of surface solar radiation were calculated by the one layer solar radiative transfer model(GWNU) which was corrected by multi layer Line-by-Line(LBL) model during 2009 in South Korea. The aerosol optical thickness, ozone amount, cloud fraction and total precipitable water were used as the input data for GWNU model run and they were retrieved from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer(MODIS), Ozone Monitoring Instrument(OMI), MTSAT-1R satellite data and the Regional Data Assimilation Prediction System(RDAPS) model result, respectively. The surface solar radiation was calculated with 4 km spatial resolution in South Korea region using the GWNU model and the results were compared with surface measurement(by pyranometer) data of 22 KMA solar sites. The maximum values(more than $5,400MJ/m^2$) of model calculated annual solar radiation were found in Andong, Daegu and Jinju regions and these results were corresponded with the MTSAT-1R cloud amount data. However, the spatial distribution of surface measurement data was comparatively different from the model calculation because of the insufficient correction and management problems for the sites instruments(pyranometer).

  • In order to provide basic information for the estimation of evapotranspiration in the ponded direct seeding paddy field, both field lysimeter experiment and model prediction were performed to estimate daily ET. Various methods were used to predict daily reference crop ET and crop coefficients. Measure4 mean daily ET during the 1995 growing season varied from 5.9 to 6.1 mm depending on the species, while it varied from 5.1 to 5.5 mm in 1996. Model predicted mean daily ET during the 1995 growing season varied from 3.9 to 4.9 mm depending on the prediction model, while it varied from 3.5 to 4.7 mm in 1996. The smaller ET values both measured and predicted in 1996 were caused by the low values of temperature, sunshine hours, and solar radiation. Crop coefficients varied from 1.20 to 1.50 in 1995 depending on the prediction model, while it varied from 1.10 to 1.47 in 1996. Comparison of the seven reference crop ET prediction methods used in this study shows that the Penman-Monteith method and the FAO-Radiation method gave the lowest ET while the corrected Penman method and the Hargreaves method gave the largest ET. Since crop coefficients vary to a large extent based on the prediction methods, reference crop ET prediction method should be carefully selected in irrigation planning.

  • Estimation of the general along-track acceleration was performed in the KOMPSAT-1 orbit determination process. Several sets of the atmospheric drag and solar radiation pressure coefficients were also derived with the different spacecraft area. State vectors in the orbit determination with the different spacecraft area were compared in the time frame. The orbit prediction using the estimated coefficients was performed and compared with the orbit determination results. The orbit prediction with the different general acceleration values was also carried out for the comparison.

  • Computer simulation of buildings and solar energy systems is being used increasingly in energy assessments and design. For the six locations (Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Deagu, Gwangju and Busan) in South Korea where the global hourly solar irradiation (GHSI) is currently measured, GHSI was calculated using a comparatively simple cloud cover radiation model (CRM) and sunshine fraction radiation model (SFRM). The result was that the measured and calculated values of GHSI were similar for the six regions. Results of cloud cover and sunshine fraction models have been compared with the measured data using the coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean bias error (MBE). The strength of correlation R2 varied within similar ranges: 0.886-0.914 for CRM and 0.908-0.934 for SFRM. Average MBE for the CRM and SFRM were 6.67 and 14.02 W/m2, respectively, and average RMSE 104.36 and 92.15 W/m2. This showed that SFRM was slightly accurate and used many regions as compared to CRM for prediction of GHSI.

  • The SRP (Solar Radiation Pressure) model has always been an issue in the dynamic GPS (Global Positioning System) orbit determination. The widely used CODE (Center for Orbit Determination in Europe) model and its variants have nine parameters to estimate the solar radiation pressure from the Sun and to absorb the remaining forces. However, these parameters show a very high correlation with each other and, therefore, only several of them are estimated at most of the IGS (International GNSS Service) analysis centers. In this study, we attempted to numerically verify the correlation between the parameters. For this purpose, a bi-directional, multi-step numerical integrator was developed. The correlation between the SRP parameters was analyzed in terms of post-fit residuals of the orbit. The integrated orbit was fitted to the IGS final orbit as external observations. On top of the parametric analysis of the SRP parameters, we also verified the capabilities of orbit prediction at later time epochs. As a secondary criterion for orbit quality, the positional discontinuity of the daily arcs was also analyzed. The resulting post-fit RMSE (Root-Mean-Squared Error) shows a level of 4.8 mm on average and there is no significant difference between block types. Since the once-per-revolution parameters in the Y-axis are highly correlated with those in the B-axis, the periodic terms in the D- and Y-axis are constrained to zero in order to resolve the correlations. The 6-hr predicted orbit based on the previous day yields about 3 cm or less compared to the IGS final orbit for a week, and reaches up to 6 cm for 24 hours (except for one day). The mean positional discontinuity at the boundary of two 1-day arcs is on the level of 1.4 cm for all non-eclipsing satellites. The developed orbit integrator shows a high performance in statistics of RMSE and positional discontinuity, as well as the separations of the dynamic parameters. In further research, additional verification of the reference frame for the estimated orbit using SLR is necessary to confirm the consistency of the orbit frames.

  • Whistler mode chorus waves, which are observed outside the plasmasphere of the Earth's magnetosphere, play a major role in accelerating and scattering energetic electrons in the radiation belts. In this study we developed a predicting scheme of the global distribution of chorus by using the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) satellite data. First, we determined global spatial distributions of chorus activity, and identified fit functions that best represent chorus intensities in specific L-MLT zones. Second, we determined the specific dependence of average chorus intensity on preceding solar wind conditions (e.g., solar wind speed, IMF Bz, energy coupling degree) as well as preceding geomagnetic states (as represented by AE, for example). Finally, we combined these two results to develop the predicting functions for the global distribution and intensity of chorus. Implementing these results in the radiation belt models should improve the local acceleration effect by chorus waves.
